DF General Discussion / Re: DF Memes?
« on: April 07, 2011, 09:39:09 am »
I
The only thing internet memes provide less than humor is relevant information. On anything.
A meme is not about humour or useful information. A meme is something you want to repeat, and they also function as a social marker.

Will building materials reflect the location of the city and the importance of the building?
I imagine a city on the plains will have mostly brick buildings, with only the city hall and the cathedral made of stone. We just need to get adobe bricks or more charcoal from one log or animal poo fuel, because it'll be easier to build it out of wood now.

DF General Discussion / Re: Oh, the heavenly ASCII
« on: January 06, 2011, 04:42:30 pm »
I've always played with a tileset (first with a custom one, now using Phoebus'), but found out that in adventure mode ASCII works better. Camps and other features are more noticeable and I can tell apart my swordsman sidekick and a bandit swordsman. I then tried paying dwarf mode in ASCII, and turns out it's perfectly playable. The only thing I miss is streamlined gem/ore designations.

You also cannot embark on any settlement now, not just on another fortress. Even practically empty elven retreats are off-limits.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: How did you find out about DF?
« on: September 13, 2009, 04:53:22 am »
First I read about it on 4chan's /tg/. Then I found and read Boatmurdered. Then I downloaded DF and started playing.

Awesome. It's a pity all of my forts are so boring and utilitarian.

DF General Discussion / Re: Regarding Urist
« on: June 30, 2009, 11:58:59 am »
I thought Urist meant "Gear".
That's "Olon" if memory serves.   :-\
Not "Cog"? :D
I dont think that the i in Urist should be treated like an и...
Why not?

The Russian word sounds like "you WRIST".
I've always pronounced Urist as "YOU wrist".

My dictionary also says "elf" comes from "oaf".

I once entered an elven retreat and found it empty; only a small wooden hut stood in the middle. Inside it was a heavily wounded human peasant lying on a bed. When I tried to attack him, he gave an introduction like megabeasts do, and when he died (he couldn't put up much of a fight, being crippled), I found a metric crapton of elf bone jewellery on his corpse.
I then looked him up in legends, and found out he wiped that retreat out almost singlehandedly. 98 notable kills. I felt so bad for killing him.  :(

Adventurer mode doesn't work for me on vanilla d12. I can zoom in and out just fine, but nothing I press on the keyboard is recognised by DF.
Also, scrolling is very-very sluggish if I maximize the window. I guess 1920x1200 is too much for it.

I once created a Spirit of Fire adventurer to depopulate the world. When I retired him for a while and started a fortress, the world immediately entered the Age of the Elf. Now I'm busy killing the tree-hugging bastards to see if I can advance the history further.

DF General Discussion / Re: The NEW Future of the Fortress

Quote from: Toady One
I did partial fractures today and did some more with healing breaks and scarring, did some changes to permanent deformation wounds (bends/dents on metal creatures for example), handled how heavy bruising and miscellaneous damage causes function loss, did permanent bleeding for wounds like heart bifurcation/throat removal, and refined the contents under pressure characteristics for guts; the ability to grab the exposed guts, attack or sever the exposed guts, the guts getting dirty when they drag on the ground and other such things all came basically for free. There are some dev items on that I guess... you can't yet strangle people with the exposed guts, though I suppose that's now within reach (grabbing the guts now would only open up a pinching attack I think, which would be the least of your adversary's problems). All very disgusting.
:o
You stab the mechant in the body with your iron short sword!
The merchant's guts are torn!
You are sprayed with pressurized feces!

DF Modding / Re: Kobold Camp

I guess I have downloaded the wrong version. Caravans come every season, my wrestlers become legendary in 4-5 months, and they ripped the elven siege to pieces in a blink of an eye.

DF Suggestions / Re: Usable vehicles.

Wheelchairs. Seriously.  Would allow injured dwarves to move slowly around on whatever z-levels you happen to have ramp access to.
Yes, and then you build a 10-ramp long downward slope and send your legless swordsdwarf down it into a goblin party at a tremendous speed. Reminds me of Pratchett's Silver Horde.
