Ooh, this happened to me a while ago. I'd just started digging a hole in the ground for my dwarves to sleep in and a shat load of bats started pouring out... While the entrance was completely surrounded by kittens. All-out slaughter ensued.

[Don't know why I'm posting this, I'm not normally much of a story critic :P] IMHO I think the plot was good, but you didn't make the most of it, overall it felt kinda dry. I think you tried to put too many events in too little words and this gave the events less weight. If it was more detailed I think the story would be pretty awesome though.

Trees and towercaps shouldn't be obstacles period. Or, at the very least, creatures should be able to pass through their tiles at a reduced speed. In the meantime you might try paving future channels.

I think that's a part of dwarven personality having high imoderation and emotionality in the raws

Either that or they're highly susceptible to bipolar disorder. You know, mental hospitals would be a nice additon to DF.

I've always preferred reading community and succession forts journal-style, for some reason. No reason in particular. I think it's good either way though, so just write however you feel is most comfortable I guess :)

Granite has the idea. In the mean time I'd like to see an INIT option for discovered veins to completely reveal themselves so you can designate it all in one go, at the very least. Wouldn't be hard to implement at all.

This is making me want to start some sort of nomadic desert-people fort, sans the nomadic part and with a bit more egyptian. All buildings above ground and made of stone, lots of livestock and glass and tanneries and what not, with egyptian style tombs and monuments. Some pyramids too.

If you ever get enough glass you could wall off the entire map border and totally secure the place. You'd have your own secured little nature preserve of some kind for wood. You could expand the fort upwards and build over the ground with some supports here and there so you don't use up valuable woodland. I once tried to start a fort kind of like that with wooden piers in the sky but it didn't take off :/

Also, you're using the aquifer to suck up the brook water aren't you? :P

Bayonets and secondary weapons are a must! Any warrior worth their salt would carry a backup weapon. I'd also like to see civilians carrying weapons for personal protection, but that's another topic...

Dump a bunch of goblins in a pool and make sure they don't drown so you can use it to execute nobles! It's like in those spy films where the hero is tied up and suspended above a tank of sharks and slowly lowered down :D

EDIT: Actually, dumping some other hostile critters with [SWIMS_INNATE] in your water moat would be cool. I'd love to fill my moat with elves.
