DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Face Palm moments you had
« on: November 12, 2009, 06:59:22 am »
I started up a new castle at Dwarf Heaven and after initial setup worked my way around the aquafier and a few levels down to start the initial dwarven hall. Besides the hall and the sleeping quarters I created a mason shop with a few storage areas, each for each quality, to quickly see what I have in store. These storage areas were above and below the mason shop to minimize travel time. Many happy diggings later, smoothing sleeping quarters etc, I decided to add another level on storage area on top of the existing levels and there I was, back at the aquafier. Flood my castle. :(

And if you want to dig down there is another solution without cave-ins.

Highest level: normal digging the size you want.
Each lower level: Just design the whole level with upward ramps and when it is done, design it with remove ramps.

In between you can smooth and engrave the walls of the level if you want to. You can even leave pillars in your big hall, not necessary, but pretty.

I'm going with very large and uneccessary, but surprisngly efficient rooms in my current fortress.  So I design my floor which will be dedicated to smithing.  I mentioned large/uneccessary.  That floor can probably fit about 10-20 workshops per row.  And there are 9 rows.  So I run magma through the whole lot, and wait for it to get a steady 4 underneath it (to prevent a mood claiming it only to have it unactivate.  Had 2 metalcrafting moods during the time while it was filling too, glad I did)

I then try to build, only to realize that the very CENTER tile of every forge building cannot be over lava.  Guess where I'd run my chasms?

So I have to build floors over every single hole (30-60 tiles times 9) and then channel out another section row (this time in the right spot)  WITHOUT flooding the other infrastructure underneath it, and then I have to wait for it to fill.  Again.

My Glass mega-project is never getting done.....

Maybe I'm not understanding the problem fully but why do you need to completely fill in the tiles and then completely build a new channel for that? Wouldn't it be easier to just build floor tiles over the few empty gaps that will be supporting the center workshop tiles? You should only have to build one tile for each workshop and no additional channeling should be needed.
The minute he is going to read this will be a bigger face palm moment than that he just described.  ;D

Or dump it near your mason shop / stonecrafter shop / mechanic shop, so your trained dwarfs can be more effective. Don't forget to reclaim the stones after they are dumped. (d - b - c)

Simply have a 'baby catcher' at the bottom of the shaft so you can bury them to avoid tantrum spirals.
It's called a "floor". That will catch your babies pretty well.

Carpenter is most of the time on repeat for Barrels, Bins and Beds, in ratio 3:2:1.
Craftstores are most of the time on repeat for stone crafts, to get rid of some of the stone and to make the traders real happy.
In various places I just place a mason, with a max level on something low and repeat on blocks, cleans up stone, trains masons mostly for military and I have enough blocks to create walls or such.
Also, the brewer and cook on repeat as they will run out of input eventually, thus cancelling the repeat.

That in combination with micromanaging stockpiles, so haulers bring everything to the right place. Bins near craft stores, barrels near the kitchen and still, beds near the living tower, lower and higher quality seperate for livingquarter stuff (cabinets, doors, statues and such) so I can see in a glance how much of each I have.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Newbie Questions

How can I make sure my nobles get the high quality beds/chests/etc put in there rooms, seems to only let me pick the type I want to place, not which one?

Press 'x' when choosing the type, it will show you a view of the different items you have with their quality.

When I try to use the zip file I get a message from DF:

Missing reaction definition

I use DF 0.28.181.40d withouth mods running on Wine. Does somebody else succesfully used the zip?

What I meant was that I am pretty sure it was a short sword.  I would have to guess a wood one, procured from elves.

...

Not using any 3rd party tools.

If you got it from the elves, I guess it would be counted as 3rd party tool, wouldn't it?  ;)

DF Suggestions / Option to find magma / water
« on: July 29, 2008, 03:35:00 pm »
I've noticed the new options in DF to search for magma pipes/pools and water sources. Most of the time I'm searching for a place which has at least a running water source and some magma, whether it is a under or above ground river or a magma pipe or pool. Would it be possible to add the search options for "water" and "magma"? So the option water would match an underground river, a normal river, maybe even a pool. (Is that one endless? I don't think so, but can be wrong) and the option magma would match a magma pipe and a magma pool.

Another nice option would be to only select embarkable (Is that English ;) ) spots.

I tried it with an unmodified version of c. I was almost suspecting windows vs. wine. That they treated random differently. ;)

I've tried to use the seed above and got it generated. :) I exactly found the same spot as in the pictures, only without the magma vent? Is that randomly generated? I've dug to the bottom on the place the picture shows, but nothing. Everything else is there. The sandstone, the water, the pillars, but no magma. :( What could have caused this?
