The area you build in is actually not that important, you can get metal from goblinite and you can make exports of trap components and prepared food to get stuff like raw glass, sand and clay from caravans if you don't have it on your map. If you want to try out various industries, you can usually embark on an island where goblins can't reach you so you don't have to worry about sieges, but that doesn't seem to be what you want...

What you do want to make sure of is that your militia is properly trained (and at least minimally armed) and/or traps are ready before the siege arrives, which may take a few years (or it may start on the first year depending on where your fortress is) in more recent versions...

Defending your fortress generally isn't that difficult early on, it's the later sieges where you get 100+ goblins plus building-destroyer trolls and occasionally goblins on mounts that your defenses really get tested...

You need to kill the first set of goblins to start getting goblinite tho. How are you supposed to kill the first couple if you're on a map with no iron?

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: DF2012 to .40 - What to expect?

Well traction benches work now, diagnosis is average priority compared to the previous low, people no longer sleep in the hospital beds unless injured, and one medical dwarf can completely run a hospital just fine off screen if given supplies. Hospitals are quite efficient now.

Unless a dwarf gets an injury to cartilage or other things that don't heal at all and then bleed to death.
When is that bug gonna get fixed?

You only need a dungeon master to TAME exotic animals not train them. So if you get the occasional Tame giant eagle with elf caravans, you DO NOT need a dungeon master to train it into a war giant eagle.

Hey captain duck!
I watched your LP #5 and noticed your dwarves are drinking water and not booze. Did you never build a still and thus ran out of booze?

Yeah I know about the 3 right tiles. I built the workshop with a wall on the right because of that. And the gem stockpile is accessible.

Ok I am having some problems with gems. Some weird ones.
First, why are my dwarves letting Large Gems sit around instead of moving them to the Finished Goods stockpile? They are not forbidden or marked for dumping. And the finished goods stockpile IS indeed set to accept large gems.
Second, why is my Jeweler's Workshop not providing me with options to cut the gems I've just found and transported to the gem stockpile? I have rough Precious Fire Opals, Prase, a few others with no option under the Jeweler's workshop tasks to cut them. Tried deconstructing and rebuilding the workshop.

a friend giving you an explanation on how the game mechanics work, what kind of things you should avoid, and why.

I initially read that as you should avoid learning the game mechanics. Its more fun that way. lol

Cotton Candy means Adamantite? Man I should come here more often. I've never heard that before.

I'd -guess- steel is better, except for shields and blunt weapons.

I know silver is the best for blunt weapons but I didn't know shields were a special example also. What's better for shields?

Unfortunately, that's nowhere near enough info to know what happened... Those tools work over here. It's a 31.20 or 31.21, judging from the 'uses world ptr' part. Never ran into the 'can't init map' bit with those versions. Normally that means there's no local map loaded.

I'd have to have more details, but there's no easy way to retrieve those on your side... I'll have to think about this a bit.

Well I got it to work. It seems it only works for me when I use the Lazy Newb Pack GUI to launch the programs as opposed to just double clicking on the icon in the folder.
Very odd.

So when trying to use reveal and prospector in the newest version it says

"uses world ptr
can't init map"

and stops there.
What's wrong? And how do I fix this?

Off topic but how can you specify how many Z-levels before the first cavern level or how many cavern levels to have?
I'd LIKE to have magma without having to dig down to the 3rd cavern level (usually over 100 Z-levels down) every time.

I can verify that bituminous coal is listed as a metal. I went back to my initial save of my previous embark, which was 'Shallow Metals' (plural) and used DFReveal on it. It had tetrahedrite, bituminous coal, and nothing else until the adamantine (which I don't believe earns a mention, since it's omnipresent).

I embarked to a site that said Shallow and Deep metal and all I got was the world's supply of Tetrahedrite and some sphalerite deeper down and then nothing until the adamantine.
Getting basic iron is hard as hell now. You know its rough when your starting civ doesn't even have iron anvils (or anything else made of iron) available to select at embark.

Does the .20 Mineral Concentration Parameter make it vastly easier to get basic ores again?

Hit "I" (note the capital), hit the letter corresponding to the arrow.  You'll bleed a bit, but it'll end up in your hand so you can throw it or stab someone with it.

Oh sweet thanks!

So I have an arrow stuck in my leg. How do I remove it?
