I realized that there's a half-scientific way to check my hunch - Google Trends:
https://trends.google.com/trends/explore?date=all&geo=US&q=%22lets%20play%22

Searches for the term "Let's play" have dropped to just barely over pre-Let's Play Archive levels; I'm not at all surprised that plenty of people still call them Let's Plays (I still do!), but it looks like it's possible that the term has mostly dropped out of the wider internet's collective consciousness. Probably easier to just search for the name of the game you want to watch now that you're all but guaranteed to get Let's Play's when you do.

Boatmurdered was definitely my first introduction to Dwarf Fortress. The first time I actually tried playing it, it was still 2D, so it must have been 2007 or so. I bounced off of it then but picked it up again a year or so later, and have been regularly playing ever since. I even did some very embarrassing Let's Plays (do people still call them Let's Plays? I don't think so, right?) circa 2010 that got more attention than I ever expected. I've always wanted to give streaming DF another go, but since then I've been to college, then grad school, and now work as a computational physicist, so I don't really have the time. Besides, the video game video/streaming space is completely different now, and I don't know how much appetite there is for more DF content.

OneFjef got me to notice the game

Now there's a name I haven't come across in a long time! Big dose of nostalgia right there.

Observe, however, that there is a method to their madness.

Which is?

Existential nihilism, inevitably.

For example, my laptop has an older generation i7 with 8 cores (well, as far as I know it has 4 cores, but they're each split into two "virtual cores"? This is an area of computer hardware that I know little about) running at 1.6 GHz. My laptop is great for running lots of programs at once and programs that can use more than one core (engineering and math software, mostly), but it's not great for something like Dwarf Fortress, which can only use one core.

One issue is that there are lots of different Haswell CPUs, with different numbers of cores, clock speeds, overclocking ability, integrated graphics, and what have you. You might have to look at the different models and pick one that matches the features that you're looking for, but you can ignore CPUs that sacrifice clock speed for more cores. Generally, bigger model number means better performance, and the letter K after the model number means you can overclock it.

In addition, the new generation of Intel CPU (Broadwell) is slated to come out in the fall (it's going to be on a 14 nm process instead of the 22 nm process that Haswell is on, which should mean big gains in performance and power efficiency all around) so it might be worth waiting until then to either get a Haswell CPU on sale or get a brand new Broadwell chip.

Correct me if I'm way off base here, but it seems like you're not much of a PC hardware nerd; if that's the case, I honestly think you'll be fine buying whatever CPU costs $200-$250 right now. If you're not into overclocking or benchmarks, anything at that price point will do you well, and you can ignore my big nerd rants above.

InsanityIncarnate, he did say "exclusively." :P but no, you're right.

You should be looking at single core speed for the CPU, RAM as fast as you can afford (your motherboard choice will limit you there) and probably an SSD (over M.2, Sata Express, or whatever the new trend in high-bandwidth standards is). I'm not sure there's much more to keep in mind beyond that, although I'm sure someone more experienced than I at building PCs can step in and correct that. As far as OSes go, I am definitely not a fan of Windows 8; any operating system that increases by an order of magnitude the screen space my cursor has to travel (charms, anyone?) and doubles or triples the number of times I have to click to get where I want to (control panel, command line, run bar, windows explorer) gets a thumbs down in my book. If you're comfortable with windows 8 however, there are a good number of low level OS improvements that might be worth it.

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Re: Okay, so I ate this elf

If you've been in an evil biome, there's a chance that the ground was just covered in slime and you've been tracking that everywhere. Evil slime can rain down and has different names, like vile ooze and what not; I'd be that's what's happening here.

This bug is discussed in good detail in this thread, where Toady (with a little help) found that it is being caused by any form of autosaving:

http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=140133.45

You might want to crosspost this over to that thread; I bet some people watching that thread might be interested in this, even if a bug fix for it is slated to come out soon (Toady mentioned it might be today on the bug tracker). Thanks for sharing, I'll be trying this out on my own.

EDIT: Thulen, do you have INITIAL_SAVE set to YES? If you turn that (and all other autosaving) off, it might allow you to get longer-lasting fortresses.

Wait, let's be a little careful with our terms here; do you have a graphics set installed, Obibun, or is that just a custom tileset? Switching tilesets, after all, involves only changing a line in the init files and definitely shouldn't affect actual gameplay. I don't recognize immediately what you're using, so it could be one or the other. I switched to a square tileset and have been having some small brewing issues (possibly related to the old container issues that were in 0.34, where everything in a barrel gets tied up at once) but have been able in the end to brew most things without trouble (I've had quinoa beer, for instance).

DF Announcements / Re: Dwarf Fortress 0.40.01 Released

I got a crash: "camp order missing parent -- army will camp forever" is repeated over and over again in the errorlog. This happened when I asked about the position of the ruler's forces were in Adventure Mode. Don't know if I can repeat it; doubt I can unless I find the exact same person I talked to before, which will be hard as I hadn't saved the game.

I got what appears to be the same crash in fortress mode; the only other errors in the error log are some pathing failures that I don't think are related to the crash. Anyone up for looking through the bugtracker to see if this has already been reported?

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Am I a vampire?
« on: July 05, 2014, 02:04:09 pm »
Just to second m-logik's post, I think the issue is that the contaminant system is a little weird. I've been able to make more than a few vampire adventurers, but only when drinking any liquid (including, say, another vampire's blood) "laced with [vampire]'s blood." My guess is that it has something to do with the game making a distinction between splatters/smears and contaminants, and only contaminants can pass along syndromes.

Logging on to the forum for the first time in literally years to ask for a turn; having read through all 134 pages over the past week, I think it'll be worth the wait. Looking forward to reading your upcoming story, kesperan!

Well, this is all I've been able to do recently - it's a bit odd. The camera yellowed and desaturated it, and I took the picture at an off angle, but I think it still gets the point across. This is by no means finished - I think I'm going to remove the ship and redo the sky, among other things.

The medium is acrylic on canvas, just in case anyone was curious.

Great work as usual everyone! Exciting things are coming out of this thread.

How many dwarves does it take to kill a Rutherer in the workshop area? Apparently more than 30 - they've been chasing the stupid thing in circles for two seasons and it's killed 10 of them and ripped the hands or arms off of a few more. Luckily I've got a hopsital set up, but I'm going to have a lot of crippled dwarves.

Wow, Red Fortune, that's pretty awesome. The bright reflection from the moon seems like it's drawing my eye away from the focal point a tad, but that's not a big issue since it's balanced pretty well with the reflection from the lamp post.

Anyway, just a quick sketch from me. I had a little fun with this one.

Nah, I've assigned one. I guess it's a bug then. Which is a shame, because I just got to the HFS,  and my sqauds have absolutely nothing to protect themselves with, except one dwarf has an artifact axe. All I'm going to say is that you need to see the new HFS for yourself.
