I'm guessing that it's randomly generated? And if it is I must say the generator does a great job. [and so did the generator's creator] And a map legend would be nice. Most of the stuff is self-explanatory but there are 3 or more types of forests and it would be nice to know which is which. [not to mention the mysterious square root signs]

Losing is fun! Everything is going fine and dandy and then wham, a named grizzly bear kills a dwarf, a mule, and breaks another dwarf's arm and leg. We'll see how long can we survive.

So I took 15 units of dwarven wine with me to a new fortress ... and they brought it in 15 barrels. That can be considered cheating since one barrel costs more points than one unit of wine.

First thought: Holy crap! The intro!
Second thought: Zzzzzz... World generation...

Oh yeah, and the game icon rocks too.

I fear that the game will suffer the fate of Battlecruiser 3000 AD [and I don't mean the bugs]. I know people that don't like it simply because of it's level of complexity.  And Dwarf Fortress sounds overwhelming to say the least. I'm not complaining. I simply love  games with lots of numbers, variables and whatnot. It's just hard to find people who are into this sort of thing.

It seems that Req 248 is causing some serious eye strain.

DF General Discussion / Decaying bones preventing artifacts
« on: August 20, 2006, 02:47:00 pm »
[Hope this one isn't a false alarm just like the last one.]

So my dwarf got in "the mood", got some galena, got some bones and went to make an artifact. As he was making his creation the bones decayed and so, not having the resources, he just sat there pretending to be doing something. Didn't want to go for replacement bones [plenty of those], didn't mumble about materials, just mumbled about <insert>. Poor guy died of thirst after going insane.

My first artifact in the new version required iron bars [which were available] and chert blocks [which i didn't have but made right away since i was sitting on a load of chert]. I can't remember the second artifact but i think it was a similar setup. So yeah, just like Lightning4 said, they choose stuff you already have or can make  from what you've got. I don't think they'll require gold nuggets, which you don't have yet but somehow the dwarf knows they're on the map somewhere.

Just my 5 cents.

Those pics aren't anything special [and it's far from a complete list]. Just stuff from Wikipedia and images.google. Every time i dig out something new it's pic hunting time. But at least now i know how petrified wood looks like.

Found some Two-legged Rhinoceros Lizards [if i remember correctly]. Fortunately those guys are just pests.

Knowing how something looks is nice. I've got a bunch of jpg of all the minerals i've encountered. Putting some up on the wiki could give people an idea how their +doors+ and things look like.

DF General Discussion / Item name corrupted?
« on: August 15, 2006, 05:09:00 pm »
So my clothsmaker got possessed, gathered a lot of random things [silk threads, wood logs, onyx, turtle shell] and made an artifact. I went to see how it looks and it's name in "v: Description" looked like a damned Christmas tree. Every letter was of a different colour. Same goes for letter backgrounds. Did I hit the jackpot or what? Saved, quit, loaded game again and now the item name in the description is completely blank except for one red square at it's beggining. Surprisingly the item name is still there before I press "v" to get to the description. Maybe it's the length?Tecakkasith Onshen, "The Sweet Prowler of Chanting", a cave spider silk gloves.
