All digital information on a computer is ultimately in binary.

DF General Discussion / Re: Dwarf Fortress on Desura!

Since Tarn's only source of income is donations toward the development of Dwarf Fortress, I certainly hope that the Desura program provides a link directly to Bay12games.com/dwarves/

If it works anything like steam, you can add third party games to the list to execute the game from within the interface. People have done this with DF and Steam before, you know, as well.

He should go to steal something from Mojang's booth.

The only thing I have to say to this conversation is, If freedom does not mean being free to do what you want without needing a financial motivation, I don't know what it is. Toady is doing what he wants, and he is doing it the way he wants to do it. Anyone who thinks that he should do it some other way that would make it better; just NO. That way may be your way, or the way you work the best, but it isn't Toady's way, and Toady has a right to decide the way he does it. For better or worse, this is the difficult path he's started on, and until he genuinely feels that he should divert course, no one has the right to question the moral purity of his decision.

Sean Malstrom's article encouraging Toady to see the 'Moral Goodness' in making his players Customers implies that there is a moral failing in not doing so. I would be shocked if we combed through his articles and COULDN'T find some objectivist preaching in there.

Of course it works. Once the people are afraid an angry, they will project that fear and anger onto anyone who isn't similar enough to them, either ethnically, or ideologically, and they will do the work of tearing each other apart for the terrorist.

As someone who used to make these sorts of things in my previous employment, I have this advice to give. FOR THE LOVE OF GOD ALWAYS DOUBLE CHECK THE POLARITY OF THOSE CAPACITORS BEFORE SOLDERING THEM TO THE BOARD.

Depending on the kind of power that's going through them, having the capacitors in backwards will make them explode. Although not particularly dangerous, as long as you have good ventilation, there will be a split second in the course of the explosion that you are dead certain that you have just been shot and are dying. It is also likely to shock the shit out of you.

Siberia has a lot of fur and gold, for example. It's definitely worth it if you have high production and trade efficiency. The only reason you wouldn't want to colonize is if you are Catholic and intend to hold onto the Papacy. Getting the papacy is determined by province count and the base tax in the provinces. This, mechanically, was intended to be sort of a way to balance the fact that Spain could basically get it every time once colonization starts.

Since you're Russia, though, I presume you're still Orthodox, in which case, you have no excuse. Siberia is absolutely worth it.

It also saves to the screenshots folder in the Europa Universalis 3 directory, even when using steam.

Should go ultra-narrow minded honestly. There are tradeoffs to be made in this game. When it comes to be a massive, continent spanning empire, there are really only two possible options. Be ultra-leftist and tolerant of everything via Libertie, Fraternite, Egalite, Ecumenism, and Humanist Tolerance, OR go ultra narrow minded and theocratic, and adopt Church Attendance Duty, Unam Sanctum, and similar ideas and convert everything you gain, while hoping for the culture flipping event to fire all over the place, which it probably will.

Really, the first option is probably the best, but what you absolutely cannot get away with is staying in the middle ground. You have to go for one extreme or the other if you want to be a massive empire, otherwise you will get rebel problems.

General Discussion / Re: Kobo eReader
« on: July 01, 2011, 12:28:34 am »
I have a very basic e-reader called a Pandigital Novel. It runs on the Android platform, and has an unlocking software tool that allows you to use it as a rather basic tablet. It reads .epub ebook files just fine, which is great because, for example, Project Gutenberg provides .epub files. It's no where near the level of the iPad, but for reading books, surfing the internet, and even viewing video, it functions well within the level of being enjoyable.
