DF General Discussion / Re: Players - What do you want out of a mod?
« on: April 15, 2010, 04:18:22 am »
Just in the vanilla DF there's already an amazing plethora of things to focus on. I've tried a few mods that add a lot of stuff, and more often than not it just adds to the general messiness and lack of focus. From a mod I appreciate through-out testing and robust, sensible changes to game mechanics. Streamlining the game experience is an option worth considering. Basically it doesn't matter what you mod, as long as it's better than sliced bread.

In the 0.31.x series there are numerous game balance problems which I hope are going to get fixed in the vanilla DF. Any serious mods should wait for the 'next 40d' as their base DF version.

DF General Discussion / Re: DF Accelerator
« on: April 07, 2010, 07:25:46 am »
Works super fine for me. I'm running DF 0.31.01 on Ubuntu and nvidia geforce 8800 GT with wine-1.1.41 and the 185.18.36 drivers. Without the accelerator, using [PARTIAL_PRINT:NO:2] it runs about 30-40 fps, and with the accelerator and [PARTIAL_PRINT:YES:0] it jumps to about 80-100 fps.

It could be released any time now. Even during the next five minutes.

June 19th, a summer release.

Not the first thing, but a recurring thing in the new version will be reading through brutally detailed fight reports....

6
See it released?

I'll probably give the arena a quick spin, just so see how it works.

DF General Discussion / Re: Arena Mode Fight Club
« on: March 11, 2010, 05:47:11 am »
This is all very disturbing. How can there be a fight club without the proper rules?

Anyway, I just thought that it wouldn't be impossible to write a little handler in Python (or whatever rocks your boat) which keeps track of a money integer and what's bought with it, then modifies the raws to reflect these transactions and launches the DF arena mode with the correct arguments to initiate the fight. The only thing that's unsure about it is that whether or not you can launch the DF arena mode (team) fights with command line arguments and/or specific raw files, but the same limitation applies to any IRC bot.

Alright, got the new head working after using ln to make a link to libjpeg-8.so in the /df_linux/libs directory.

I have the same problem of running it fine once, but on the second run the sound is garbled. (using ALSA) Have to look into other options there.

The main menu runs at about 650 FPS, tripled from d16. The game itself runs at about the same speed when starting out (~100 FPS).

I just took the new head and am getting the following error:

mkdir: cannot create directory `unused_libs': File exists
mv: cannot stat `libs/libSDL*': No such file or directory
./dwarfort.exe: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/libSDL_image-1.2.so.0: undefined symbol: TIFFReadRGBAImage

Running Ubuntu 9.10. libsdl1.2-dev should be installed, at least sudo aptitude install libsdl1.2-dev claims it's ok. Is this a problem that could get fixed by symlinking? I've never done that before...

Great work compiling the list. Doesn't help with my drooling for the new version, though.

From the embark point, I can see a lot of bauxite and iron around the place. Some copper and coke too. I really wish there is flux somewhere...

Using the Mayday 40d16 pack.

I've been trying to gen this in Mayday 40d16 and the best I can find is a site with everything else but magma... And I'm not happy with that.

I'm not sure about the cooking methods of chicken though.

Raw chicken is a serious health hazard - It's an easy method to get food poisoning. It should always be served fully cooked with +75 degrees Celcius inside, which is enough to kill the most common hazardous bacteria. As for the source... I don't think I'm going to translate my cooking class books to English, it should be easily accessible information anyway.

The combat and squads sections are amazing. I can't wait to play around with them... Next if Toady really manages to pull off all the top 10 eternal suggestions, together with burrows, that just about covers all I've ever wanted to nitpick about the game. Perhaps the only remaining issue is on how to designate an area for digging so that any alert from digging that particular area is muted and ignored and most importantly won't bother the player.

Ok got an automated test suite running, it tests combinations of randomly selected passable points.  A bunch of relavent info is written to file (I'll put it on the screen too soon).

This is a very interesting project. I just read through the thread, and suggest that you'd put that test suite up for grabs in the first post -- It would give a much more 'upbeat' feeling to reading through all the posts knowing that there was something released in the end.  :)
