Creative Projects / Re: Six Shot Chaos

:Name Questin: Clause is German variant of Nicolas and is perfectly acceptable as a first name, even if it isn't the most common one, being a shortened form of Niklaus. I hadn't scrolled all the way down the wiki because by that time I was getting frustrated by my inability to translate it to make sure I wasn't naming my repugnant fat asshole 'Dancing Flower' or some other whimsical name. The Yakuza angle is an interesting one and is putting points behind making the name official.

I am sort of pulling on the "All Germans are Nazis" sentiment and knew that BBEG + German name, and Japanese name, would lead people to jump to that sort of conclusion. However in story its more of an overt display of that common Western element of East meats West and the resultant melding of cultures.

:The Image: For staging I'll play with raising the horizon line a bit*, it looks like an improvement from here. Shadows however are important in the image and I cant lose that right arm shadow as they are sort of character themselves. The shadows I used are a bit sheer but also his right arms shadow isn't really supposed to be playing by the rules anyway.

For the story, even though book 1 doesn't play with the sanity element, of what is and Isn't there, I have to lay the groundwork for later. The shadow wisp there is not a being of this world, and isn't fully on this side of the divide. I guess I will have to use scenery to better show its location on the page, better then having it next to but in front of a poorly drawn cactus.

I built the character without plotting out the skeleton first, and he has a little drunken tilt to him, but that's an easy fix. thanks for all the pointers I will work on it a bit, next post will probably be some character sketches.

*The Fool, did you mean I should lift the horizon? cause you wrote that it was to low, then said lowering it made it more dramatic?

Creative Projects / Six Shot Chaos
« on: January 26, 2012, 03:48:29 am »
So I've been doing this little creative project for a few months now that is leaning towards becoming a comic, and I have gotten to the point where I am actually starting to make stuff but I am having limited success in getting any critical assessments from friends and family. Now seeing how the bay12ers are a creative bunch I thought you all would be a great group of people to ask for your point of view.

The story is a standard western yarn. Gunslinger hero, living in the west off rattlesnake venom and his wits, comes to a little down-on-its-luck mining town who through a series of events crack his rough gritty exterior to show the big damn hero he truly is. Throw in a love interest and some paranormal Lovecraftian hijinks and there you go. Six Shot Chaos.

I have two things that I want help with. One is the image below. Its a rough sketch-up of the potential cover. I'm not looking for art advice as it is clearly wip, but before I go about putting an extended amount of time going into detailed drawing I was wondering what you might have to say about the placement, action, lighting, imagery, etc. that strikes you.

The image is of our hero facing off against some sort of shadow-creature gun drawn. Shadows clearly play a large roll in the image. There are also cacti and a rising/setting sun. all images are simply there because they are more useful then simply placing rectangles on the page with the word "Cactus" or "Hero guy" in them.

My other question is a bit more specialized, I have a villain character that I am using who is having name issues. His current working name is Clause Fukuoka. Problem is I have extremely limited understanding of Japanese and have very little way of knowing what it meant and if it would work in the context I was using it in. His previous name was going to be fukumu, while the meaning of the word would work, the actual usage as a name, or even on its own like that might not work or make any sense whatsoever. Japanese written forms are beyond my ken and I just want to get it right, or at least acceptably close to it, the few times I will be using it in my story.

I look forward to your advise and hope to be posting more SSC things soon.

Ya it would have, I just didn't have any I can almost picture the 2z deep magma that was the temples core swarming with the spirits of fallen dwarves. Gosh I miss that fort, it was my temple fort so I had built  temples to each of the Civs gods, but I had never had a god of death, AND suicide be a skeletal dwarf before. It also had a Giant Rat god of trade and jewels. makes me cry knowing that its gone forever because my computer exploded.

um thats just a normal goddess of war chaos and fortresses... your crafter made a little miniature statue of her.

Edit: oh but to contribute to the thread, My favorite was a Zal the dented shields of suffering, God of Death, Suicide, and Mountains most often takes the form of a Skeletal Male Dwarf. I had to make it the patron god of the fort and build a giant upturned skull with magma in its mouth in which the deceased were dropped to their final rest. It was before ghosts were in though, that would have been even more epic.

Therlethid: Hedonism Fortress

Cosmia Udosendok trudged through the Great hall the layers upon layers of clothing weighed her down, suffocating her. She needed to get free from the shackles of the society around her that was content in stagnation and intent on driving its members mad with their 200 year cloister. With each passing year the puritanical rule of Asmel Lolokkasben all pleasures and even the outward display of positive emotion are met with heavy penalties. The gates of the mountain home of the Humorous Dagger creaked open slowly to display the caravan waiting for her to join them to leave this place. She moved quickly and silently, the penalty for breaking the cloister was punishable by death. as was public nudity. She would be glad to be away from this place in her new home of Therlethid.

The Wagon ground to a halt on a placid hillside, Wild Goats frolicked in a nearby field, and the hooting of an owl could be heard off in the distance. This was the place, here she could be herself, she could call this place home. And with a mirthful laugh the intrepid dwarves threw off their constricting clothing and went running through the forest.

I've been away from dwarf fortress for a while and decided to grab myself a fairly basic forest embark and with a few minor self imposed rules see what I can make. I expect lots of fun, due to the loss of the minor protection granted to my dwarves by clothing a lot of interesting possible avenues the story can take.

Warning: The story contains examples of literary nudity and probable mild adult themes. I'm not planing to make an erotic fiction, but jokes about trashy romance novels and reminiscent story elements will most definitely be used. (to bad I didn't wait till the vampire update, oh the Twilight jokes!)

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Civilian Uniforms and other such things
« on: December 02, 2011, 01:35:10 pm »
I was just wondering if there a way to give your civilians a uniform or dress code without drafting them all into the military to do so? I found that if the dwarf was in the middle of a civilian job when appointed to a squad they tend to ignore "Replace With" uniform designations. This results in some of my dwarves in the approved uniform and the others decked out in all manner of random attire. which is mighty annoying having the Expedition leader and voice of the story not following his own world views(I am working on a community fort).

If there isn't a way to apply civilian uniforms is there a way to remove the unwanted clothing from dwarves to make room for their uniforms?

Additional point of discussion: Do you use Civilian uniforms in your forts? If so why and what are they?

I grabbed this mod and decided it was a little to diversified for my own personal tastes and have decided to mod it down a little bit. and for the most part its working out, but Ive gotten to the point my own knowledge in modding DF is lacking and where the file names and locations are different from vanilla DF.

I like to tame the animal peoples, and give them their own little villages on my sites whenever possible and my questions are am I missing any of the animal people of genesis. I have modded them in Creature_Cave_1, and Creature_Savage_good. but I did not see Plumphelmet men or any variations there of and was wondering If im just overlooking it. also, Is Petvalue required for the pet tag to function? I've always had trouble getting the pet tag to work properly with animal men.

Addition: Oh, and do I have to go in and scrub out all the bits in the raws relating to the casts I removed from dwarves, or is simply removing the cast and its stat section sufficient?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: !!!SPOILERS!!! HFS Colonisation
« on: December 01, 2011, 01:39:25 am »
A good step 9 would be to Quarry Slade. Im not sure if there has been confirmation yet if its possible or not by making the ground obsidianized, then digging down. you would only be getting about 1 possible slade for every 9 uncovered tiles, but hey, Its freakin' Slade!

11
I always imagine the plump helmet men like purple versions of the third one in the top row and for communication i had always assumed it was either wiggles and simple sign-language or vibrations and possibly thumping out sounds either against their bodies or the ground or objects in the area. When I was about to post I remembered they don't have eyes and was about to junk my preconceptions but then I checked the raws and saw they have Infravision so now I have the impression that their entire head is like a big 360 degree thermal sensor. This suddenly makes me a little disconcerted looking at my own plumphelmet man colony and keep hearing the soundtrack played in the Predator movies when its the predators viewpoint.

12
I find it oddly fitting that when the last dwarf dies the primary sentient creatures in the fort will be Plump helmet men. I can see it now, an age passes and an adventurer finds Weatherwires ruins, she makes her way to the throne room to find a wizened old Plump Helmet Man In flowing robes who tells the tale of the ancient dwarves. And to this day Plump Helmet Men guard the ancient halls from the occasional Antelope and Topazolite Fiends who stumble upon the Dwarven legacy.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / God of suicide, good patron or no?
« on: October 12, 2011, 11:10:42 pm »
So I just got my first Migrant wave in my new fort and it had a disproportionate number of useless dwarves. So I start looking to see who would be my best choice for the militia leader, and hes a faithful worshiper of Osod Nekolngotol (Osod Skullsghosts) Goddess of suicide. I'm just wondered if this is a smart thing to do on my Terrifying/haunted/haunted site with a lot of undead roaming around.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Incredible Kills
« on: May 22, 2011, 02:29:58 pm »
In Kobold camp (because every time kobolds win its already incredible) I had a giant cave swallow tormenting my cutebolds.

I sent out my squad to finaly have done, 2 crosbowbolds, 2 swordbolds 1 champion wrestler(had all the kills), and the expedition leader with his horse skull helm. they chase it up to the top of the hill and the crossbows start firing away. they riddle it with bone and wood bolts, its inventory is full of stuck-ins, but the damage is minimal, no organ hits. Most of the bolds decide they are bored and head of to drink some water, then all thats left is the Champion, his lover, and the Boss. The swallow makes its move and the champion jumps on its back and they beat the crap out of each other. the expedition leader just watches from three squares away, and the crossbowbold with 1 bolt left does not fire. Im really worried my Champ is going to die, cause hes the only real combat capable member of the clan, so Im throwing a fit.

He mangles every part of the Cave Swallows body. He is dehydrated, hungry and drowsy before he decides hes had enough. He stands up and walks back to camp for some water food and a nap. His lover pops her last bolt into the creatures brain and the three of them walk away Like A Boss!
