Which is why I mentioned it; It sometimes seems that I'm the only guy who knows about it, so I never get to use it due to no one else using it. :/

Also, now that I mention it, I can't get on the backup for some reason. Anyone else having a problem with it?

If you do have problems with the backup server, feel free to shoot me a PM.  I don't post here anymore, but I have email notifications on and will get PMs.

Backup server is now running new code, but database isn't working yet.  dbcon.ErrorMsg() is very helpfully returning zilch.  I'll work on it more later this week.

Taking down the backup server to work on updating.  Hope to have it back up in 6-9 hours.

Yeah, the server was considered a good backup back when we still had /tg/. Yeah, the alt has lost it's glory days really.

It's overdue for an update, but currently is running Mint 12 and can't even hit it's repos for updates.  Looking at getting it back up to speed either this week or next.

I think me and MC crashed the Alt Server.

???

I swear we weren't doing anything that we know of that could crash the server.

Sorry, the host machine required a restart and forgot to check if people were on.  It should be back up now.

Don't believe it's related to any main server troubles, but due to Dyn's recent discontinuation of their free dynamic DNS service, I've had to update the alt server address.

Please update your bookmarks to use this for the alt server address:

Backup server is updated to this century; I needed to update the BYOND tools to build the most recent codebase.

The wiki link to the rules should be updated too.

We dont have a wiki?? I dont understand, perhaps you are referring to the TG wiki in which we have nothing to do with at all?
The rules sections contains a link to the tg wiki page with the rules, but tg changed domains.

Message KG about it, he maintains the OP on this thread.

Fixed!

Alternate server is now back up, although bandwidth remains at 1 Mbps, so it'll probably still be fairly laggy.

Let's see... people gushing over their own characters, screaming about "BAD RP BAD RP!!!!" when they die, passive aggressive "WAAH I GOT GRIFD TRATERS SHOULDNT BE ABL 2 KIL", and cliques. Sorry to make such a bitchy post, but this already seems like Baystation.

Traitors are granted latitude in completing their objectives, including being able to kill, up to and including the whole station (although someone deciding to kill the whole station without the "escape alone" objective is frowned upon).  If there's a particular incident you would like addressed, feel free to PM the admins with details, and we'll look into it.  This sort of complaining in the thread doesn't do anything to help if there's a problem.

A few friends and I want to play some local games of SS13. I remember that the necessary files to run a server were floating around at one point. Does anybody know offhand where to get those? Would I just use the link at the bottom of the OP?

Yup, use the link at the bottom of the OP, tweak settings to taste, and compile.  It should run stock by default, but you'll need to set up MySQL and appropriate settings if you want polls and the library to work properly.

Alternate server will be down over the weekend while I'm visiting family.  Should be back up sometime Sunday evening.

Man, what are we doing to the server that keeps making it crash? And I can't connect to KG's either.

Dynamic DNS was out of date.  Should be back up now.

PM the complaints to an admin please. Not in the thread, as has been said repeatedly since the start of the thread.

THREAD RULES:
  • No discussion of admin-ing style of other servers.
  • No personal attacks.
  • No ban discussion, except as directly related to Urist McStation.  Please discuss bans of other servers somewhere else; the bruised feelings tend to get the general discussion thread locked.

Kay. The fact remains that we shouldn't do this in thread, as Vactor, KG, Bdthemag, and others have repeatedly asked us not to. I'm going to drop the issue now, but it really works better to PM admins and discuss it rationally.

scrdest, it falls under the "No personal attacks" bit.  I've seen a few complaints about rounds which are calm and non-specific as to names, which are ok.  Those let admins know there was a problem, and someone we can talk to in order to find out what was going on.  It's even better if the post mentions if there was an admin on at the time, so we can get a first hand perspective.

However, most complaints tend to single somebody out, and much of the time, the complainer doesn't have the full picture.  The round where they got unceremoniously robusted and spaced 5 minutes in may have just been the round they were unfortunate enough to be in the same room as the traitor at round start.  If they complain in the thread about it, it tends to kick up hostility over what actually may have been just the way the game is played.

Ideally, the above useful information can be PMed to the admins, since that sends us an email that we have a PM and need to look at something.  However, as long as a round complaint does not personally attack other players (and that will be construed widely), a post is acceptable.  If you need to vent about another specific player, a PM is definitely better.
