A quick Wikipedia check:
"The name "Tiefling" was coined by Wolfgang Baur, when original Planescape designer David "Zeb" Cook asked for a Germanic-sounding word for humans with fiendish blood.[citation needed] Baur derived the name from Teufel, or "Devil" in German.[citation needed] The direct translation of Tiefling, however, would be "deepling," since tief means "deep." A closer derivation from Teufel would be teufling."

The German word "Teufel" (devil) stems from Old High German "tiuf" > "tiufl" > "tiuflun" ("-un" having the function of a singular definite article (like in Scandinavian languages)). Old High German "tiuf" corresponds to Standard German "tief" and English "deep", and the particle "-(e)l" to German/English "-ling" (creature/person associated with the attribute before). "Tiefling" is an awesome word for that matter, for it conveys the original pre-Christian (or Romanticism period :) ) meaning of "one of the (however many) deep-dwellers" rather than "a single being that fucks shit up".

Doesn't Germany get a lot of its power from France's nuclear reactors? If this is true, then I would say Germany is moderate at best.
Yes, but only in winter (when there is still higher export than import). In summer, energy is usually exported to France because less reactors are active due to too high ambient temperature (less cooling).

And it's only a law. If after the 20 years energy will not suffice the whole point is moot and Germany might roll back to C. Possibly earlier.

Philosopher and Dungeon Master. Everyone else should die from bad karma.

This gives me the idea it would be awesome to make a deathpit where the subject would die of hunger/thirst before hitting the bottom.  ;D

If the world wasn't flat, it would be awesome to set the minimum level much lower than zero. Strike the mantle, pump water into the deeps to penetrate the semiliquid interior, tap the iron core (hell yeah) and get out on the other side of the world. Then you will have the infinite gravitational deathtrap.

Of course this is not that trivial, but greater feats were achieved in the past. It might take much longer than a single human life though, but then again the world is flat, cracking that problem in the first place.

DF General Discussion / Re: On Sep 6: One year since a DF release
« on: August 23, 2009, 02:28:57 pm »
For some seconds I was a little pissed half a year ago, but having time with a stable release and lots of people to share saves with this is kinda fulfilling, too. Knowing the next release will take some more time, bugs are features and a source of laughter, and one still keeps the motivation to finish that one more goddamn community fortress this time for good. If the game seems boring, connect with people you don't know yet and play with them. There's always something new.

Also, the new release will change so much it won't really be the old shoddy DF again, but a whole new game. Be it squad management, squad customization, regions, RAW modability, all of the fighting system, the underground, healthcare, daycare, or being awesome in general.

DF is dead. Long live DF!

DF General Discussion / Re: That is not dwarvern atom smasher...
« on: August 23, 2009, 12:38:15 pm »
You did not yet consider conservation of energy/mass. Obviously, most of what you smash comes right back out of the nefariously hacked smelters of mod users and cheating megaconstructors. The survisuccess rate thus is much lower than to be expected. Also note that some of the impulse of the smasher will be transferred to the object to transport, as can be observed from burning/exploding kittens materializing in smelters.

Anyways, smelting too much matter into existence would cause the reverse effect, namely sucking away stuff from the world you currently reside in (or another unknown one). The gentle auditor now might ask what the atom smasher in this reality might be. Simple. It's my washing machine, smashing my socks into the barracks of my dwarves. Damned loopholes.

Fix your computer instead.

I don't want you (or anyone) to give me software fixes for the weather over here, I wanted
  • to point out that it's just unusual nowadays to have ~100% CPU load for just one process, even a game, and
  • to express feelings of thankfulness for providing a DF version that brings my computer to its limits (and thanks to >40°C room temperature, to its knees ;D).

Not sure what you would DO with it.... but you could provide cheap, renewable analog power to the entire dwarven nation!

If there is an effectively unlimited source of water in both time and spice (e.g. an aquifier), you never can have enough power. Shooting sieges with beams of water from the other side of the map? Hell yeah. Or shooting the goddamn water right from the map, who cares. As long as it's awesome and kills your FPS, go for it.

I always played DF via Wine, and didn't use any 40d* update. Now using "native" 40d14 I was riddled with more kernel panics than I've seen my entire life... Turns out it's the heat. The old versions never reached ~100% CPU usage. Using cpulimit, setting DF to 50%, it's still a nice improvement over the old versions, performance-wise.

Would be nice if for future versions, through some arcane threading mechanism, some configurable limit would be built-in.
