What you lack is a goal. Find something you'd like to do and do it. Get good at it. Be curious about how it works.

Life Advice / Re: University Protips

If you want to do well in the university, go for the marathon study instead of the sprints. Don't spend 5-7 hours each weekend doing your homework, or skip your homework entirely until the exams where you go full turbo-nerd on it. It's always much, much better to spread the courseload out over the prescribed time. It will feel like less work, it will feel easier and you'll learn more. I've tried both approaches and spreading the courseload is really the most comfortable imo.

Life Advice / Re: Is drinking too much milk a bad thing?
« on: August 23, 2012, 11:09:50 am »
Uhh, what's the rest of your diet look like? I can totally understand stomache camps and intestinal difficulties if you're not taking in anything but liquids. 10-15 cans of soda a day is a lot of energy, if you're not really aware of it you could be sustaining yourself almost purely through that. If you go from a pure-soda to pure-milk diet you're gonna have a bad time.

That said, aint nothing wrong with milk unless you're lactos intolerant. Of all the different drinks you could be addicted to, it's probably one of the best ones. It's not acidic so it doesn't rinse away your teeth. Its nutritional profile consists of a mix of protein and sugar with a bit of fat as opposed to a pure-sugar drink such as soda or juice. The fact that the energy is difficult to obtain (lactose is slow to digest) means that you don't get an instant sugar high followed by an insulin high. This makes your energy profile more stabile instead of constantly going through highs and lows.

That said, there's still a lot of energy in milk. Given that it's a liquid, it's also very easy to drink large amounts of it. If you're not careful, it's an easy way to get fat without feeling like you're overeating, especially if you're at 2L a day.

General Discussion / Re: Graphene and (wedding) rings.
« on: July 19, 2012, 01:47:03 pm »
Graphene is a novel material, but I can't see how you'd make a ring out of it.

Graphite (pencil lead) is the thermodynamically most stabile structure of pure carbon under normal atmospheric conditions, as opposed to diamond. It consists of layer upon layer of graphene, stacked atop of one another while not entirely bonding between the layers. For instance, while the material of graphene is very excellent at conducting electricity, graphite is only so in two directions. If you try to jump between graphene layers, you will not be able to conduct electricity.

Imagine graphene as a piece of paper, and then graphite as a book.

While graphene is a novel property, most of the novelty comes from the fact that it is an entirely two-dimensional structure, always flat, and always one carbon atom thick.

I would find it highly difficult to construct a ring of a one-atom thick sheet of paper. Should it be possible, the ring would probably be impossible to see with the naked eye, and incredibly fragile. Should you choose to make the ring bigger, so as to make it more sturdy, you would end up with a ring of graphite, i.e. pencil lead. You might convince your fiancee that if she jumped into a volcano, she might some day turn it into diamond. However I think most of the novelty will wear off as the ring will snap and draw on stuff.

If you want to incorporate graphene into a ring through some other measure... Well, you would have an impossibly thin and invisible layer on your ring. If you want to size it up, you will get a practical wedding ring which you can write "I love you" with for a few weeks. :P

Still progressing on Starting Strength. Protein powder is making it much easier to eat enough, but eating enough is still my downfall. It's just hard to stuff so much stuff down my throat.

5 RM lifts so far:

Squat: 100 kg
Deadlift: 110 kg
Bench press: 70 kg
Overhead press: 50 kg
Power clean: 60kg

My deadlift and power clean are behind my squat because I would get fainting spells whenever I tried going hard on them for a while. Don't knw what gives, but it got better once I started really committing to the Valsalva maneuver. I don't get them now anymore except for when I rack the final really heavy deadlift.

For me, learning to play the piano, baking and strength training are doing the trick.

Hey man, don't get down on yourself. :) Fast food is okay very occasionally, and sometimes you have to take a break from excercising to let your muscles heal. But don't do either a whole lot, they're bad habits. :P

I hope you get more sleep tonight.

Sleep is very imprtant. So is rest. If you don't "take a break from exercising to let your muscles heal" after every actual workout, you're going to end up with no strength gains and stress on top. There's a reason why strength programs or couch to 5k have you working out every other day, instead of every day. If you seriously tax yourself every day, you're gonna have a bad time.

That's a thing for Josh to look at too, btw.

General Discussion / Re: Moving from America

I will just say this: Do not become enamored with Northern Europe, especially the Nordic countries. I realize that a lot of people on the internet fall into this romantic view of Sweden and the like as the kind of liberal paradise they'd love to live in above all else, but you have to realize that such a view is just that: romantic.

The reality of other nations is far different than the popular perception of them, and no one should know that better than an American on the internet.

Aww man, don't diss the nordics! Everythings just fine and dandy up here.

If you want to engage the abs more when doing sit-ups, simply squeeze them tight while doing the exercise.

Today I learned how to deadlift 105 kg. And on Tuesday I'll try to learn how to lift 110 kg. :)

So that's where all the dead lifting advice for JoshuaH came from :P

I tried it and it works. That's why I think if he tries it, it'll work. :P

Two PB&J Sandwiches and a glass of milk today, ontop of all my water. I don't feel the need to eat as much lately, which I'm interpreting as good.

Is that what you had for lunch/dinner today, or is that all you had to eat today? Because I sure as heck hope you're eating more than two sandwiches a day.

I also had some fish sticks shortly after making that post, though I would have gladly gone without them had I not smelled them cooking in the kitchen and got hungry because of it.

Still didn't answer my question.  :P

Was that all you ate that day, or simply a single meal?
