DF General Discussion / Re: Dwarf Fortress Talk #16: Feedback

Toady did send me this one early but I was out on holiday so told him to go ahead and release the cast. I can't offer an ETA but it's not an enormously long talk so shouldn't be anything like the extreme end of Neonivek's provided range.

As an aside, I'm fairly sure that I've already transcribed a record breaking (for Dwarf Fortress Talk) sentence from this one, at some 280+ words long.

I feel your pain mallocks. I'd want to get a high degree of accuracy on transcripts of the talks, but man it is labor intensive.

High accuracy just isn't possible. After I've typed out 10'000+ words (this one came in at over 14'000) and formatted it the absolute last thing I want to do is read over it for spelling mistakes. That having been said anyone who does want to is welcome to send me a list of corrections and I can get an improved version sent off to Toady One shortly thereafter.

Anyway the good news is that it's done - just the formatting to do which is about an extra hour of work - and it should be winging it's way towards Toady One very soon.

Just a quick update, I'm sorry it's taking so long but it is progressing and hopefully won't be too much longer.

Transcript coming along, Mallocks?

I had some work on unfortunately, but hope to start it today. Things are slightly hectic over here at the moment so I just can't offer an ETA this time but naturally I'll try to get it done as soon as I can.

But I'm labouring the point. Toady's work on DF is probably best compared to a hermit challenge. A hermit trying to build a fortress fit for dozens, but not letting others help with the digging and masonry. Up until now, that's the only way we've ever seen someone play, and that's the frame of reference we're using.

Well that's really why I caveated my statement; ultimately it's unknowable until something similar to Dwarf Fortress happens. Personally I do believe that such a game can only really be the construct of an extremely dedicated mind, but if there's suddenly the money to put a team together who will work at it as a job rather than as a goal, then who knows?

I'm not sure about these predictions of people leaving in droves for the 'next big thing' or what have you, not because I think that people wouldn't leave, but because I have my doubts that another Dwarf Fortress will actually emerge. Kieron Gillen put this particular chain of thought much better than I could over at Rock Paper Shotgun:

Quote
Dwarf Fortress sits at the furthest tip of the development brought to the gaming mainstream by Bullfrog’s Populous. The indirect-control management/construction game, with an eye on physical simulation rules. Except Dwarf Fortress is that taken to simply ludicrous degrees. I’ve been known to compare Toady’s opus to Proust’s Remembrance of Things Past, in terms of monomanical devotion to a singular vision informed pretty much entirely by your own interests. Dwarf Fortress is the designer as God, trying to create a machine which creates universes from a seed of a number at a button-press.

Dwarf Fortress is important because it’s fucking insane.

I don't think this sort of game comes up very often, and I think the sheer amount of work to get even this far - a state where all but its most die hard fans will admit is in some places entirely lacking - suggests that holding one's breath for another Dwarf Fortress might be a dangerous occupation. I fully understand why people wish that an alternative would emerge, but I think that the frustrations with Toady sometimes ignore that his development priorities, e.g. absolutely everything else before a UI overhaul, are a result of him having the sort of personality that makes the game possible at all.

I'm not saying I'm necessarily right - someone could be working on a Dwarf Fortress beater even as I type this - I'm just adding my $0.02 on that particular topic.

I actually found it a really interesting idea Lac, although not something that's necessary for me as such. It looked like it would take quite a long time to do though?

There's probably something wrong with me that some of the bug fixes recently make me happier than some of the recent feature additions.

Some people are not native English speakers, and find it immeasurably easier to understand via reading rather than via listening ahonek.

Until you pointed that out Knight Otu I'd never really thought about it, but I can't think of another word in the English language ending 'ipe' that has it pronounced the same way as in 'recipe'. Strange language, English.

Edit: Also just to let folks know, the transcript will be up in much better time than last time. You can probably expect it within a few days.

I'm working on it, but I get it the same time as you guys and it's a long'un (likely to be on the order of 16'000 words). I'll do my best.

Bookkeeper is the closest I'm aware of to scribe, so I'll go with that.

Mallocks, where is your wonderful transcript? I can read faster than I can listen, and use less of my precious bandwidth in the process!

Sorry, I was on holiday for the first week of the podcast's life and things have just been hectic since. I am working on it and will try and get it to Toady this side of November. Apologies, it's quite a long one and unavoidably therefore just takes a bunch of time to finish.
