DF General Discussion / Nobles.
« on: August 12, 2006, 11:59:00 am »
Just curious, what generates the appearance of nobles? Value of all the items in your fort? Number of dwarves? How much crap you trade with caravans? A combination of all three?

Maybe I need more drugs and corruption to bring in the politics.

A new Artifact has been made in my fortress. Ritholzimkel, "The Noble Plain". A pair of spider silk cloth gloves, encircled with bands of bronze. And images of dwarves in Spider Silk.

I wonder if he'll actually wear them instead of carrying them around.

I just had a Jewler claim the Craftsdwarf shop, gather up some turtle shell and rough gems of a type I don't remember, and create 'Matulsibrek', which I believe means 'Salvesdance'.

It's a mini-forge that he now carries around with him at all times.

Just had a jeweler go into a Fey mood. He's looking for Rough Gems and Metal Bars, both of which I have, he just doesn't seem motivated to go and get them. And nobody else is bringing them to him.

DF General Discussion / Monster frequency.
« on: August 11, 2006, 04:41:00 pm »
I'm just a little curios as to what the frequency tends to be for evil creatures. So far, out of three fortresses, I've only been attacked by things that weren't flatly animals once. A group of frogmen hopped out of the underground river in my third fortress, which seems to be in a more polar region of my world, as the outdoor river's been frozen year-round.

I'm also having an issue with puppies overrunning the place. Had two dogs with us when we started, and they've been having puppies like crazy.

Heh heh. My slaughter wasn't from the civil war bug. It was just a matter of everyone being really unhappy and all gathered in one spot. The child getting beaten sent about half of them into tantrums leading to fist fights to the death.  ;)

So, how well are you all keeping your dwarves in working order? My second attempt (out of two so far) lasted about... 3.5 years before a wave of immigrants a bit larger than I could handle showed up. Try as I might, I couldn't get enough food fast enough (as I had only figured out how to smelt and make weapons minutes beforehand, hunting wasn't a good option (I couldn't figure out what I was supposed to be gathering for the smelter)), and people started getting unhappy.

This lead to a massive brawl after someone threw a tantrum and stormed into the party room, also pull of unhappy people, and knocked out a child in one blow. By the end of the brawl, blood was everywhere and the only people left were 4 dwarves who ran off and locked themselves in their rooms and died of thirst.

Kinda depressing, eh?  ;)

Another interesting notes about merchants.

If a dwarf should happen to destroy your trade depot while some merchants are unloading their stuff, they'll happily leave everything they got unpacked on the ground for you and go on their merry way.

I did have a merchant bring two 'dwarven cheese' items to me, actually. I didn't buy either. Maybe the cheese just gets scattered when they leave the map instead of going with them?

I couldn't find the other topic that mentioned people running way off to the corner of the map to grab food from nowhere, but I've just experienced this myself

Got about 20 dwarves, running a bit low on food in the middle of the winter, when one of my miners runs out of the fort and starts heading for the hills. Intrigued, I followed him along... and by the time I caught up to him, he was coming back from the far northeastern corner with some cheese (I think). Interesting note is that no merchants have been killed in this game.

So he went off to the northeast and apparently pulled some cheese out of the ground. Or bought it off the deer wandering around the area.

Whoops, he just went insane. Guess I didn't have enough rough gems lying around.  ;)

Hm. He's looking for rough gems. Perhaps I'll sate his need for them just to see what happens.

...My jewelcrafter just got Possessed. Game paused and everything. He's blinking with a pink exclamation point.

He doesn't seem to be doing anything particularly harmful. Just claimed his workshop and started cutting gems. But I get the feeling this isn't as innocuous as it seems...

DF General Discussion / Coal and Ashes
« on: August 10, 2006, 06:24:00 pm »
My second go at a Dwarven Outpost is going far, far better than the first. Not counting that the original farmer dwarf got eaten by a bear and that racoons keep harrassing the poor dwarves.

Question, though. How do I make coal and ashes and the like for the Metalsmith and the Ashery? Would a Furnace do this?

I could, of course, just build one and find out, I suppose. But why do that when I can ask a (likely) stupid question?

Toady One: Not sure, as its lower body exploded into gore with one of my Drunk cronies punched him next round.  ;)

Curious: Wrestler characters rock. My most successful one strangled a minotaur to death before getting decapitated by a named Master Swordsman later.  ;)
