DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Anyone seen a platypus?
« on: December 07, 2017, 06:35:50 pm »
I've met a platypus, in adventurer mode. At the start of adventure it was missing from a bestiary, but after I've met him it is there (but only a male).

After I retired adventurer for a test, and exported data in Legends, the world_sites_and_pops.txt still lacks platypuses, though. So there is a kind of bug here.

Thank you - I will start settling rivers at random I guess :/

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Anyone seen a platypus?
« on: December 07, 2017, 05:46:00 pm »
Checking stuff in the raws I noticed the platypus correctly had its venom simulated. Decided to try and see how it behave in DF - can I weaponize it?

I've created 2 dozen worlds, changed the [FREQUENCY] tag to a 100, platypuses never show up when I check the world-sites-and-pops text file.

1- are they bugged? Anyone seen them?
2- am I using the frequency tag wrong?
3- is there something that would just prevent them to be listed in the txt file but they would still show up in-world?

Edit: on 0.44.02

I'm in your Belle Province playing your strange complex game.

Same experience: people are conceptually interested in it, but the learning curve is really hard and off-putting. I even passed around my copy of the book Getting Started to no avail.

Masterwork DF / Re: Next project - poll
« on: August 08, 2014, 03:19:20 pm »
I would chose something I can't see on the listed options:

Make MasterWork work on the mac!
Mac and Linux users are on their own. :P

But seriously, I never used a mac or a linux system, so if people want it ported, they have to do it themselves, then send me the version so that I can distribute it.

The issue seems to be with the launcher right? For the Starter packs it got all resolved for mac and linux once a multi-platform launcher became available.

Would that be the same for Masterwork? Are there any other part of Masterworks that are platform-specific?

Masterwork DF / Re: Concerning Mac support: Who's in charge?
« on: October 08, 2013, 06:09:36 pm »
I've had success running wine 1.2.3 (only!) with Masterwork, both on Linux and Mac. Other versions of wine don't cause the dfhack window to appear. (I have no idea if dfhack still runs without the window, but I use the dfhack console all the time.) Therapist works great under 1.2.3 as well.

The Masterwork setup program doesn't work with wine 1.2.3, but it does with "any recent version of wine". So use a recent version to do setup, and 1.2.3 for worldgen and playing.

PlayOnMac probably helps with getting wine up and running, but it's been a while, and I don't actually own a Mac myself. (I just like helping others play MWDF)

~ T

Thanks, I'm actually downloading the latest version of PlayOnMac and giving this a try. I'll report with my experience. Anybody wants to chip in any tips on setting up MWDF through Wine and Playonmac are more than welcome.

Edit: this is starting on the wrong foot, PlayonMac doesn't seem to be working at all, it pretends to install wine 1.2.3 but it's never available...

Edit2: I'll leave that for people with more patience than me.

Off I go to play with Fricy's MacNewbie Reborn. At least I have some dfhack plugin goodies. One of these days I'll get to enjoy Masterwork I'm sure.

At least we're not stuck like years ago where even dwarf therapist wasn't available for the mac... </rant>

Couple of important dfhack plugins are missing/crashing on mac and the GUI is windows only. Those are the main roadblocks. Nobody has been able to solve those, so no official macMW. Some people are running masterwork with macnewbie, it's not that hard to set up, but it's not 100% feature complete...

I've tried using this "swapping up" content between the latest masterwork and the MacNewbie Reborn pack and it failed to even launch the game. Edit (to clarify) : I've tried this method with both the v3 and v4 versions, v3 launched but crashed when I choose to 'generate a new world' v4 isn't even able to show the DF window.

I'm eager to try Kobold Camp through Masterwork, but it seems out of reach at the moment, even with the method Fricy posted about (if it would work for me), you are stuck with the MacNewbie launcher and can't select kobolds as the playable race.

I've tried messing with Wine and PlayonMac a while ago for another game and it was a failure. I'd be willing to try again I had a step by step to follow.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Anyone have a DF Hack tutorial?
« on: September 03, 2013, 08:07:21 pm »
You seem to know about 'ls' to list what's available, make sure you also use 'help command'. Most commands have basic help in the command line.

I've been learning the different stuff through that. The read me html file is pretty complete and up-to-date too. Not always easy to follow but it's a good base to start from.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Choosing a Specific Region to Embark on
« on: September 03, 2013, 10:19:31 am »
If you export the world-gen settings you can use advanced world gen to re-create the exact same world, that way you can create as many fortresses in parallel identical worlds.

To export world-gen settings: go to your fortress and hit esc to open the menu and choose "export local image", from there hit 'e'
 to export images.

It will create a bunch of files in the Dwarf Fortress main folder, on of those will be named something like "fortressname-param-regionX-XXX-XXXX.txt" copy the content of this file in your init/worldgen.txt and you'll be able to use it in "Design New World with Advanced Parameters"

A good trick to know what animals you'll see is to hit 'p' to export the world's files when it's done generating. One of the file will be named regionX-world-site-and-pop.txt, the second half of that file lists all the world's animals, then it's just a matter of matching the biomes with what you see there. I frequently use this to make sure my good forests and hills will contain unicorns. Or just re-generate if the world doesn''t contain what I'm looking for. It's also useful to see if the world contains kobolds - it's in the main population on the top part of the file.

If you've already started a fortress, you can get this file by going to the esc menu and exporting an image from the map, it will create the same type of file.

This pack is so great it has brought DF back in my life. I just re-posted it to the DF subreddit so more people are aware of it.

Some questions:

  • Is there a way to make dwarf therapist able to set nicknames and custom profession name? It's really a bummer to have to switch back and forth and being unable to completely rely on DT to set your dwarves up
  • Any idea why I get crashes in advanced world gen? With the same world-gen settings in the pure DF download I never get crashes, in this pack I get a crash about every 10 world I generate. No matter the settings. Any one else is having this issue?

Very interesting fort and history here! I really love the location and how unsafe it is.

Not applying for a turn, but I'd like a dwarf please! A mechanic named McNonobots if I may.

Thanks, I hope it gets picked up soon! Who's turn is it now?

Thanks for the replies, this should be clearer in the readme I think.

I'll play with it later.

This is a great project, can't wait to use it.

I tried running the 0.5.2 on my MacBook, I get an error on launch:

I would be more than happy to post the generation information if someone could explain to me how to find it.

Looks like a nice place.

To get the worldgen settings you can either hit 'p' in the finder to export the world's setting, or, from a fortress hit escape and choose 'export images' exporting any level images will also create all the world's setting files. In the exported files you'll find two txt files, one with all the world's population and sites, and another with the specific worldgen settings. Please post this world! It looks like a very nice place!
