DF Gameplay Questions / Mac Version Ships With Exe?
« on: August 31, 2010, 03:59:43 pm »
I'm using a PC, but my friend uses a Mac. We've found the Mac build of 0.31.12 contains an .exe file rather than whatever Mac's native PE type is...

Is this normal? Is there anything my friend can do? Or is he doomed to waiting longer?

Tis crashing on me every time I export bitmaps of my region once it's generated it.

If there's something that is perhaps too broken in Dwarf Fortress, it's chokepoints. I once went on a glacial map and dug a 3-tile-wide hall into the entrance of my fortress, with all infrastructure beneath the entrance level accessible only by a ramp at the end of the hall. The hall itself was quite literally filled to hell with traps.
I then dug out a 2-tile-wide passage on either side of the hall running parallel, and mades the walls between them fortifications. I then had 2 squads of mass marksdwarves line down the passage on either side when sieges happened. Sieges were torn apart so easily that it was almost unfair >_>

Survive in a terrifying glacier biome, and you're a strategical genius. And very lucky. But a strategical genius nonetheless >_>

I think Zwei's idea is best. Just drop the prices of these materials tenfold at base cost. I'm pretty sure living in an almost resource-void glacier should be impossible, but with goblins throwing themselves at my pillbox every season, I get a fresh supply of tens of thousands worth in armour that buys all my logs, alcamahol and meat and keeps everything alive and happy >_>

This more sounds like a bug, being that 32767 is the highest number possible in a signed 32-bit integer...

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Complicated Controls & Interface
« on: October 08, 2009, 07:15:05 pm »
Eh, having grown up like The_Fool, with MUDs and NetHack and whatnot, this interface seems rather intuitive to me... But eh, I've always been a gameplay-over-graphics person. Tis a shame that most recent games are more concentrated on making their water look all realistic, than having ridiculously engaging, well-thought out gameplay ideas...

Tis well worth getting into Dwarf Fortress though. It tells a completely new story every time you start a new game, with each game, depending on how you play it, lasting many, many hours real-time. Insanely engaging, very diverse, ridiculously dynamic, and yes, highly complex. But I can guaruntee you, even in the harshest of environments, like glaciers, games can still last up to 30 hours real time easily. I think I clocked 120 hours on my second fortress in very favourable conditions. You just don't get games with such intense longetivity these days...

Bar that, if you need to get right in, I strongly recommend Captnduck's YouTube tutorial, and the Your First Fortress page on DF Wiki p_o

DF General Discussion / Re: What is DF programmed in?

C ftw, simple but effective. I can imagine Dwarf Fortress being programmed in Visual Basic or something... oh god, the lag... the lag!
