Is magic just that easy?
It helps that I'm reading Terry Pratchett right now.

No, magic is not easy. It requires blood, sweat and tears, just like any science. And some chicken sacrifice. Although it depends on what kind of magic we're talking about here. For example, we could be talking about the Dwarf Fortress kind of magic. ;)

Dwarf Fortress kind of magic.
It probably means that the space station is either a) powered by magma, b) a breed of a domesticated forgotten beast.

Ok, those aren't really 'what if's. Maybe I'm biased, but I don't see successful fiction starting off a plot generator*. In any case I don't think stories start with a plot, but a premise. If you could boil those down to a 'what if', I'd consider them. Unless the majority decides they are too awesome.

Maybe if we take a magic space station premise. I'll put it up under "What if a space station was powered by magic," if you don't mind. It could be fun.

...Aw, what the hell. I'll keep the 'crippled weapons master to the magic space station' angle in mind, in case public opinion swings that way.

*In the sense that successful fiction goes with the author(s) caring about it, and it's kind of hard when it's a random roll amidst a thousand.

Creative Projects / A Community Outlining Workshop
« on: June 22, 2012, 05:11:03 am »
By "outlining" I mean writing the plot for a story, the setting, characters and other things. I wanted to make a community novel thread at first, but then decided that it would be a bit of a stretch; for one because I'm even more clueless how to organize that. But I figured outlining would be manageable; everyone must be up for some outlining; people keep saying it's the easy part of writing.

So, to start things off, I'd like ideas for a premise. For example, and what I've thought about for a bit, a premise would be "what if aliens visited the Earth, but one man slept through it." (The implication here is that he must cope somehow with believing they were here despite having never seen them.) That's the kind of premise I'm talking about. Is there a 'what if'(s) that you'd like to turn into a story or just made up or heard of?

Premise suggestions:
  • What if a space station was powered by magic
  • Insert yours here
  • ...
----

In other news, if it turns out awesome enough someone might pick it up as a writing project, or it might become a community writing thing, or even something more. At least that's my peachy vision of it. But for now I'd just like to have fun and throw ideas around.

Cheers, man! Hi-five! I have so been there (except I provided examples of my writing and gave more strict guidelines)!

Anyway, I've been thinking about creating a thread specifically for generating idea(s), and I might even create it, and I might even create it soon, like today. So, I guess if you're interested in working out ideas with other people, keep on lookout.

I still can't see anything there. But I present a bit different version of that creation (brought to you with the use of my reading facilities).

Dunno. Deja vu? I'm sure I've seen this very story somewhere. Have you got it on deviantart, or something?

I've seen this one somewhere. Is it already becoming a classic? Are you writing a sequel by any chance?

Sadly, it's so ingrained in my memory that I really can't criticize. It's like... criticizing the Little Red Riding Hood. You can do lots of verbal things with it, but not criticize.

Time for a shameful secret: I don't actually read poetry. I assume if I continued writing I'd get there in the end. Or maybe not... I listen to a lot of rhyming music, so I guess that's my thing, and maybe aspiration.

Now, you wouldn't be surprised if I said that my poem follows an ABCD ABCD E pattern? (I don't know if capitals mean anything in this notation.)

Okay, thanks, but ::)

The problem with reading that poem is... kind of twofold: first, I just remembered that it wasn't meant for the public, but just as an exercise. However, I guess I thought it would sort of go unnoticed in this thread, or at least no one would try to think about it too much. The second part comes from how I composed the piece, namely: got up in the morning after a strange computer-gamey dream, thought up a phrase and tried to find a pattern in it. For whatever reason, the pattern went all underground. So, it's not like the poem is meant to be strenuously figured out, it's that it wasn't meant for the public.

So, I don't know, do you have any desire to figure out which bits actually rhyme or rhythm with which, or should I spoil it?

Oh, last one. Yeah, I can see some rough word usage... I wish it were a piece I could bother about fixing...

Yeah yeah, I'm a hypocrite, it's a writer's apprenticeship, not writer's showmanship, I should have thought better about posting a several months old writing... but on the other hand I thought it was sort of good, considering the amount of time I had poured into it. And not that hard to figure out. :-\

Writer's Apprenticeship be damned
Wait, what?

*Several minutes of intent staring at the OP.*

It says nowhere that it's only about prose writing! I'm gonna post a cat-grooming reference if I want to!

Er, in charade form.

Well, as I said, your plot could use a stronger intro, conflict and resolution. And I've been hurting for a couple of months now with an idea to have a sort of outlining symposium, if you will, except I keep remembering that I'm most likely going away for the summer. The only comfort is that everyone probably is, too.
