Other Games / Re: News regarding Cowed

Last time I played anything with "Cow" in the name, I almost an an aneurysm because of how frustratingly saturated the game is with drama, drama, drama, drama. If you want a game to call your own, why not learn how to code? Bonus points if you ditch BYOND, because BYOND itself is very limiting and the community is bad. If you ditch BYOND in favor of C++, I recommend looking into SDL which has integrated OpenGL graphics rendering among other useful utilities.

You can't say "I want to make a game" and expect to not have to do any coding, unless you use Game Maker and restrict yourself to the drag-and-drop interface. Or you could pay other people to code for you.

Other Games / Re: I need a new space station 13 server.
« on: September 16, 2011, 08:38:32 pm »
I am one of the active coders for /tg/station 13. I can say we're just as active, if not more, as Goonstation (the only thing between us and them in activity is you can't see their updates in real-time like you can with tgstation). I'd recommend tgstation to someone who wants casual roleplay. Most people on the server enjoy and appreciate good roleplaying, because they come from /tg/, aka traditional games (DnD, 40k, etc). You just have to put up with the occasional griefing, chaos, what-the-fuck-just-happened moments, etc.

There's a bunch of people in the community that are just complete jerkwads, like any server. However, the administration staff is the most decent, albeit slightly dramatic, group of people I've seen on any SS13 server. All in all, it just depends on what kind of gameplay experience you want:

Goonstation - If you like action, guns, insanely chaotic rounds, silly joke things like poop and piss, etc. you will love this server!

/tg/station (not including the other servers that use the tg code) - Between goonstation and baystation in terms of RP. Not too much, not too little. The occasional round will be a massive clusterfuck.

Baystation - sadly, very empty usually. From what I gather, they've got a tight-knit community going for them. Heavy, strict roleplay and realistic game mechanics. If you open an airlock without first depressurizing the room, or break a window, you WILL either slam into a wall and break all your bones or fly into space in a second.

Life Advice / Re: Looking for a C++ compiler (?)
« on: September 08, 2011, 08:31:45 pm »
You could go balls-deep using nothing but notepad or Notepad++ and g++ compiling via command line (MinGW). To make this task easier, you could use a .bat file to automatically compile all your code in a snap.

If you want to go for a more sane approach, Code::Blocks is a good choice.

General Discussion / Re: how to make a game like DF?
« on: September 08, 2011, 06:02:14 pm »
I highly suggest taking a browse through this tutorial, it's definitely more up-to-times than your book too. It's general C++ and is not intended for game developing. I recommend not diving directly into roguelikes, you'll crash and burn FAST. Rendering graphics and ASCII characters can be slightly more complicated than you think. I haven't tried any curses libraries, so I can't give you any pointers on that.

If you want to do actual graphics (2D) I recommend looking into SDL, which there are plenty of good tutorials out there for, such as this.

Gaah, this game crashes too much. Should I be playing the latest version, or something else?

A game is fun when I have to buy a new monitor because the one I was using suffered extensive physical trauma. ;)

In all seriousness, I think there's a distinctive difference between poor game design and actual difficulty. If the game presents no strategy to win, then of course there's a problem. Roguelikes tend to force you to learn how to play effectively by trial-and-error, giving some people the impression that the game is poorly designed because you keep dieing and can't win. If you don't like losing constantly, then you know the game isn't for you.

I followed the directions in the first post, but I get an "invalid port" error. Can anyone tell me what I'm supposed to do?

Nevermind. Apparently it's supposed to be port 22.

Disclaimer: there are actually no socks.

No socks?! This game sucks already! How else am I supposed to roleplay being a lowly soapmaker and running into a raging battlefield, looting every dead body's socks I can find?

Anyone know any good 2D OpenGL tutorials out there? I don't want to toss $50 into a book if there's some good resources online somewhere.
