DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Giant badgers?

But thats the only time I've ever lost to the wildlife before my first migrant wave. Maybe I'm just lucky.

Or you've never embarked to a terrifying glacier.

The skeletal yetis... oh, gods, the skeletal yetis...

Devsem Actionpacked killed his first quest objective with his bare hands, then got torn apart by bogeymen. :'(

I can't stand it when people compare the two. They have maybe two things in common: primitive graphics (though completely different styles) and mining (though DF mining feels completely different, i.e. you can't place natural-looking walls and dirt and such). That said, DF has influenced my Minecraft playstyle quite a bit, however I've been playing DF the same way for around two and a half years. The layouts of my underground bases in MC are pretty much identical to the bedroom layout I use in DF, and whenever possible I use lava behind glass as my only source of lighting in said bases. I'm also slightly OCD about not leaving parts that I've dug out that are no longer serving a purpose open; I'll fill them with dirt and any parts that would be exposed to my view from the outside will be covered over in whatever was there before I mined it.

593. Losing at video games really doesn't bother you anymore
594. You regularly refer to things not at all related to DF as "dwarfy" when appropriate

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: How exactly DO I make a Magma Cannon?

Here's mine, I used a very wide and tall reservoir for sustained fire and a lot of it. The only thing I don't like about it is that it's not exactly compact. :P

In Dwarf Fortress, giant blobs of vomit that breathe poison are perfectly normal.

My favorite is Olin Burnboy, but he died before his name got longer. Copper axes aren't very useful against bogeymen. :-\

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Dwarf Fortress featured in PC Gamer, sorta
« on: November 22, 2010, 06:15:53 pm »
This month's issue of PC Gamer (the one with Duke Nukem Forever as the cover story) has a half page article on Dwarf Fortress, featuring bits and pieces of Tim Denee's illustrated story of Oilfurnace. Thought it was cool and bay12 should know. :)

Has it not yet occurred to anyone that violent, killer ghosts would be just as dangerous to the inhabitants of the fortress as to invaders? More than likely they would just maul the dwarves. They can path through walls and fly and stuff.

I have to say, the saga of Townbrush is worthy of entry into the Hall of Legends. It was quite the amusing read.

Er... how do I grab? The only way I know how to attack is just by hitting the move key onto a tile where an enemy is, or by hitting A. :-\

Wait, how do I gouge eyes? :o

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Whats your Definition?
« on: November 02, 2010, 09:44:34 pm »
I usually define Dwarf Fortress as SimCity and Oregon Trail having a threesome with Warcraft 3. Alternatively, the closest equivalent possible to digital PCP.

Eye gouging. Lots and lots of eye gouging.
