Maybe to keep the structure of the city but still allow some level of individual building freedom we should allocate the land as we expand in various fixed sized blocks/plots of land with initial transport  links etc. pre planned and allocated, possibly reserving some land for future expansion.

This. Oh so much this. I would suggest a few guidelines (like a real-life council's Residential Codes) that would govern basic aesthetics; no solid single material structures, no building out over the boundaries of your plot, maybe force a requirement that at least 2 blocks seperate each plot etc., but otherwise what you build should generally be up to you. Major civic buildings should be done by communal deliberation though, of course.

/Agree.  We can zone land for specific uses (residential, industrial, etc).  If we all agree on a time period or general style (steam punk for example), we'll end up with a city that looks unified while still allowing for individual artistic freedom during construction.

I've been busy experimenting with various single player mods (planes, nature-overhaul, builders, and portal to name a few).

If anyone's interested, I've started a village at Gnome Castle.  The keep is built as well as some surrounding walls/towers.  All are welcome to build or claim an empty building for their own use.  You can get there through the Nome Network starting at Port Royal.

If was you huh.  >:(

Hey, don't give me the frowney-face!  I wasn't doing anything against the rules and each step I took was an effort to reduce or remove the lag-inducing effects of flying airships.  Currently my airships are parked until a solution to this problem is figured out.

What bugs me the most is even the tiny 66 block airship - little more than a 5x5 room with windows - caused people to lag.

From recent experiments with MoveCraft v0.4 (Boats v0.4), I have made the following conclusions:

1) Flying an airship 780 blocks in size that contains fences as part of its construction will cause half the server population to lag out so badly they disconnect.

2) Flying an airship 780 blocks in size that contains no fences will cause half the server population to lag heavily.  Not enough to disconnect them but definitely enough for them to complain about it.  A lot.

3) Flying an airship of 66 blocks in size (only 66 friggin blocks!) made up only of wood and glass STILL causes a few people to lag enough to complain about it.

On the plus side, it looks like we can move our airships in a vertical direction now.  So that's good.

...The soulsphere was not a true sphere; it was a set of intersecting circles. That isn't too difficult.

...If these tools allow us to create grander structures of greater beauty and charm, then I say let us have these tools.

A sphere can be defined as a set of intersecting circles.  Just sayin'
(Edit: Wait... I see what you mean.  You're right, the soulsphere was literally three intersecting circles.  Nevermind.)

I think you've convinced me that cuboid is a valuable tool... I still think we should be moderate in the way we use it.  I guess the difficult part here is how each of us defines "moderate".

It looks like I'm one of the few who didn't loose anything on the 15th.  Still, with so many others having lost stuff, I'm up for a server reset.

This is just a suggestion, but maybe we should disable cuboid on the new map (except for the /protect commands).  It seems to be directly responsible for all the current map problems.  Also, and maybe this is just me, but it kind of sucks when you put a lot of effort into finishing a big project only to have it completely dwarfed (no pun intended) and outdone by a giant cuboid construction in about 5 minutes.  I just think there's something special about the projects people build the old-fashioned way.

No, it doesn't.

For the third time, we're focusing only on getting the bloody city outine done. No unnecessary ditgging. Am I clear?

"Am I clear"??  lord, we're here to have fun.  Endlessly digging out a cavern isn't fun, it's a chore.  If you want people to help you with your grand stone city project you're going to have to give them some lee-way, or you might find yourself working on it alone.

I meant above ground power lines. I very very rarely have power outages, like once every few years.

It's the same in Canada.  Above ground lines and very few problems.

Damn you Nome! Grrrrrr  >:(

Sorry!  In my defense, I totally had the lava flows under control - there were no lava messes.  The fire started because I forgot about the lava-to-tree minimum required spacing.  I'm still not sure what that spacing is, but I now know it is more than one block. ::)

...am I still allowed on the server?  I've given up lava forever, I swear!

Fire all over the place. Fixing.

Sorry!!!

Derekristow and I rebuilt the nomesphere's outer rings.  I thought I'd improve it with lava-falls on the outside

...which lit nearby trees on fire  :-[

I feel like that guy who burned his house down while making a video of how to light a fireplace.

(I should mention Derekristow had nothing to do with this).

How bad is the fire damage PTTG?

So, is there any way to revert the errors?  Also, what are the diameters of the Nomesphere's two outer shells?

Edit:  I just copied down the pattern on some graph paper.

Middle shell repai- Is that a creeper?  What the he- *BOOM*

Middle shell mostly repaired.

Edit 2:  Rebuilt top of Skybridge by spawn.  No land under it.
           Reconstructed warehouse chunk.

Edit 3: Nomesphere shells fixed.  The actual paths need some work.

Dude, that is awesome.  Thanks, it looks great!

And receiving 500some blocks from yor buddy Mraedis. ^____^

Oh right!  Sorry, I totally forgot to give you credit!  I guess in that respect the tower was more of a joint effort.

...the server doesn't hold your inventory anyway. *shrugs*

Download Persistor.  It'll save your inventory after you log off SMP maps.  Again I have to thank Mraedis for this bit of info.

Hmm... free blocks, persistor, and the repair hack... I'm still saying I didn't cheat, but I guess there wasn't as much blood, sweat, and tears involved as I thought.

I was only on this server for a short time
Sorry, That didn't scream obsession mining to me. But it's okay to cheat, the server doesn't hold your inventory anyway. *shrugs*

What I meant there is "I've only been frequenting this server for a short time" - ie: since last friday, after which I spent most of my weekend free time OCD'ing on my tower, which brings us to today, where I am now typing this post.

Believe what you want, but I'm telling you it's totally possible to build something like that in vanilla SMP in a single weekend.

You're missing cheating.

Hey, that hurts!  I didn't cheat!  There's a huge hollowed out cavern under that tower!  It's called mining... and obsession + free time on the weekend.  Most of that I did with rock picks too until Mraedis gave me an iron pick and told me about the "repair hack", where you throw a damaged tool on the ground to repair it.

...um... so I guess if you count the repair hack as cheating, then yes I was cheating...  But there was no hacking in materials or flying involved darn it!  That tower was a huge time user-upper.
