Alright, things have been progressing, but now I have what I'm not sure is either a bug or just poor implementation on my part:
A) Anytime my dwarves are not specifically ordered to kill something, they are in 'civilian mode', even when training, which they only do individually and never as a squad.
B) I am currently under siege from some goblins. The goblins are standing at the north end of my 'trap tunnel' entrance, and have only 3 crossbowmen surviving. For some reason, my dwarves REFUSE to enter the hallway in military mode (though when I accidently disabled the CiV alert keeping the rest of the dwarves in safety they were more than happy to rush into the crossbow bolt fire). Important info: I have tried designating the hall as a burrow, as well as sending them to a burrow that would require them to pass through the hall on their way out (hoping to force them to engage). It seems no matter what I do, they will not go farther than the first square of the trap hallway, where the blood of a horde of cats and dogs and a few dwarves (and the never ending rain of blood from the vermin and monkeys being slaughtered on the surface) is covering the ground
Seperate from the military issue, I can't figure out why my water wheel isn't turning when it's over a brook (which appears to moving briskly). I am trying my first attempting at setting up an automated pumping system to create an underground body of pure water+waterfall, and then pump it back out to the surface for a moat.
