DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Military does what?
« on: May 25, 2010, 03:10:11 pm »
Okay, I expanded my 'main' safety burrow to include the hall where hte goblins and traps are, and used my civilians as bait to lure the goblins into the traps, killing them.  Not really a satisfactory approach, but it worked.  Last military question for now, how do I get my dwarves to stay in military mode full time?  I have one VERY depressed dwarf whose life is great except that he keeps getting jerked back and forth between civ and military life

Ah, thank you, I was unaware of the difference.  I will try that once I figure out how to get my dwarves to go into the hallway, or how to lure the goblins a few more squares down to the next set of weapon traps.

Seperate from the military issue, I can't figure out why my water wheel isn't turning when it's over a brook (which appears to moving briskly).  I am trying my first attempting at setting up an automated pumping system to create an underground body of pure water+waterfall, and then pump it back out to the surface for a moat.

You have to channel out the surface of a brook if you want to use it for a water wheel. Only need to channel on the space for your wheel though.
THe surface?  It's on the surface already and open to the air

Alright, things have been progressing, but now I have what I'm not sure is either a bug or just poor implementation on my part:

A) Anytime my dwarves are not specifically ordered to kill something, they are in 'civilian mode', even when training, which they only do individually and never as  a squad.
B) I am currently under siege from some goblins.  The goblins are standing at the north end of my 'trap tunnel' entrance, and have only 3 crossbowmen surviving.  For some reason, my dwarves REFUSE to enter the hallway in military mode (though when I accidently disabled the CiV alert keeping the rest of the dwarves in safety they were more than happy to rush into the crossbow bolt fire).  Important info: I have tried designating the hall as a burrow, as well as sending them to a burrow that would require them to pass through the hall on their way out (hoping to force them to engage).  It seems no matter what I do, they will not go farther than the first square of the trap hallway, where the blood of a horde of cats and dogs and a few dwarves (and the never ending rain of blood from the vermin and monkeys being slaughtered on the surface) is covering the ground

DF Gameplay Questions / Military does what?

Okay, I just updated to the new version of DF(as in from 40d to 2010).  I have NO clue how to work the military interface?  Is there a good guide on the new interface?  I'm trying to set up a group of dwarves to go train so I can clear out some of the caverns I've dug into.

DF Modding / Current release and Maygreen tileset
« on: May 24, 2010, 01:22:48 am »
I was just curious as to how the debugging process on the current version is going and whether the Maygreen tileset version on his website is still current.  I downloaded a version about a month ago and it seemed to massively lag up my computer and I noticed that all my dwarves were immortal, even when every single injury that could be done to them was.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Military Sleeping on the job

You didn't really ask a question but anyway can't you just remove the bed the sleeping dwarf is using to wake him up?

I removed the bed.  He promptly moved to the next bed over.

I'm presuming you're playing with 40D.  and this is a known issue that was one of the many reasons for the new military setup.  The simple answer is, in 40D, don't have squads.  Squad orders are solely dependent upon the squad leader, and if the squad leader is eating/drinking/sleeping, your whole squad is off duty.
Will the dwarves if made into their own individual squads still spar together and such in the barracks?

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: question about wells?
« on: April 29, 2010, 01:17:54 pm »
How far can a well pull water up from?  I was thinking about making an internal well in case of sieges or other events cutting off my access to the local above ground rivers and ponds, but I think my choices in creating it currently involve either diverting part of the river to under my fortress or drilling a well to the cavernous underground lake I discovered directly in the path of my main mining shaft.

DF Gameplay Questions / Military Sleeping on the job

So in the previous version (not .31.03, the one before that) of Dwarf Fotress, I have been building a generally nice fort.  Things have gone well enough, and project Excavate A Ton Of Area for Fun has been moving along.  Periodic raids from a nearby goblin civilization have been a minor nuisance at best, being quickly dealt with by my team of champion dwarves, and their plucky sidekicks the Not-Champion squads.  However, at the outset of the most recent invasion, I was puzzled as my military dwarves weren't responding to my orders to intercept the goblins well outside the fort.  I found all three squad leader sleeping in the barracks with the other dwarves sparring around them.  I checked the squads on duty status and they should be out there, trouncing the goblin scum.  I am puzzled why my commander has remained asleep for about 2 in game weeks now as far as I can tell and refuses to lead his dwarves to the surface to remove the goblin infestation.

Unrelated to the first issue, but I've also noticed that in the latest version, a group of trogs appears to be distracted with endlessly applying a non fatal beating to one of my dwarves who wandered down into the caverns where they live.  They've been at it for a season now, and the dwarf is still alive.  I sealed the cave off since I have no military to speak of (has a guide for the new military system been compiled?), but at this rate I think I might be able to recover him if they take long enough.

Follow up on the pump: I follow from the tutorial on the wiki fairly easily how to pump water upwards succesfully, but I don't really get how to setup a perpetual motion pond-cleaning/machine-powering setup.

And again, I seem to have failed somewhere in my management, because about 5 years into my current fortress, everyone suddenly came up starving again.  I think I may be able to keep teh fortress from initiating a chain-starve-die-tantrum-die-tantrum-die-berserk spiral liek the last one, but man are my dwarves unhappy (and hungry).

Do the animals consume my food supply? I noticed I do have some 40 puppys...

I don't recall seeing a notice about him going insane, but I suppose it's for the best... time to train a new hunter I suppose.

Now one of my dwarves has locked himself in a cage for no apparently reason... how do I get him out?

It is probably the low number of growers, I have only one farmer working the fields.

I must be doing something wrong then, because the dwarves are not utilizing anything close to the full plot, and I have 4 different ones that are fairly large.
