DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Ridiculous Artifacts
« on: January 13, 2022, 03:46:43 pm »
A visiting intelligent undead stole my artifact iron bucket from its pedestal in the temple. I did not identify the culprit until he was making his way to the exit. Piqued at his gall, I sent my military to kill him.

As it turns out, an artifact iron bucket is a formidable weapon. He killed two of my steel-clad dwarves and was breaking the legs of a third before my Captain of the Guard chopped his head open. The bucket was then returned to its pedestal, now spattered with blood. I like to pretend my dwarves are humbled by its sloppy, gruesome coat of paint.

On a separate note, i have a confession. I have never breached ANY caverns.

Be warned, your poor FPS will likely worsen after breaching the cavern. All the extra critters and twisty hallways make for complicated pathfinding.

You could set a burrow and assign that one single dwarf to it. Include the temple(s), some food stockpiles, maybe a workshop to grant the satisfaction of labour, but exclude problematic areas such as the meeting areas. Think of it as a "spa sabbatical".

Thanks for this suggestion. I currently have a dwarf who is "badly distracted" after being unable to pray to so-and-so, even though I have a fine temple to the deity in question. Burrows never crossed my mind.

There are 48 hours to go in the kickstarter and it is about 90% funded, so now's the time to chip in if you've been wanting to.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Suggestions for a challenge game?
« on: July 11, 2014, 09:12:12 am »
Purely by chance, the starting 7 dwarves in my newest 40.02 fortress are all female. "Huh, that's odd," I said to myself. Then I played for an hour before going to bed.

When I woke up, I had the idea that this would is a fortuitous good setup for a challenge fortress. I considered making an amazon fortress by killing any male immigrants, but I like to look after all my dwarves, and mass murder conflicts a bit with my ethos. So I ask of you, Bay12 forumites, to provide suggestions for challenges that would derive from an all-female starting group.

You say the baby was killed in the mason's workshop. Is it possible that the baby's corpse ended up on one of the unwalkable workshop tiles? That happens a lot when tantrumming dwarves start throwing things about, and I suppose it can happen because of fighting, too. If not, maybe you can just channel underneath the body a few times to stop it from stinking up the place. Dead babies are always bad feng shui.

Other Games / Re: Killing Floor
« on: February 19, 2012, 03:51:47 pm »
I'm The Minstrel Boy on Steam. I'm a lvl. 6 medic, and I would like to play some more Killing Floor, but as in L4D, pubbing around can be a hair-pulling experience, so my play time as of late has dropped off.

A few wee pointers from an experienced medic:

All players should heal each other rather than themselves if it's viable to do so. By healing others you (a) use less of your syringe charge; (b) earn a few pounds; and (c) earn a few points to your medic perk. (Of course, if you're in mortal danger or far away from your teammates go ahead and shoot yourself up, but you get none of the above benefits by doing so.)
If you have a medic on your team, let him heal you. As Metalax said, don't hop around if you're waiting for a healing dart. Keep line of sight with your medic, and a good medic will heal you within a couple of seconds of injury as long as he can get the shot off.
Medics can't kill as effectively as other classes, so they rely on healing to make their quid, and that quid will often be given back to the team. I've even played rounds with other players that would self-harm by jumping off cliffs near the ends of rounds so that I could earn more money and creep ever closer to the next level up.

I remember playing The Ship when it was a Half-Life mod. Never got around to trying it on Source. Would really like to do so now.

The Minstrel Boy is my name, at this link: http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561197960661675.

Thanks a bunch.

A mason of mine once had a tantrum in the statue garden. This was during a bid of down-time in my fortress, so the statue garden had maybe 30 dwarves hanging around, but of course this mason picks a fight with the Captain of the Guard, who carried a steel sword and he knew how to use it. Mason punches the Captain the arm; Captain responds by beheading the poor dwarf with such fury that his head flies across the room and landing on a statue. I had to deconstruct it to retrieve the damn thing.

This was a version before statues had descriptions, but I like to think that the statue was of the same Captain of the Guard striking a pose and the flying head skewered itself on the statue's sword. I laughed at that thought. Less funny was the 28 other dwarves tantrumming because they witnessed their bestest buddy being beheaded.

A friend of mine generated a world with a mountain range called The Wall of Fondling. I quipped that it was the dwarven equivalent of a red-light district.

General Discussion / Re: Canadian Election
« on: May 03, 2011, 05:26:40 pm »
As a Montréal anglophone, I feel a savage glee at the Bloc being firmly trounced. They failed to defend their seats against the NDP, even in rural Québec, even Duceppe's own seat; they got what they had coming to them.

Though I'm not thrilled about more Stephen Harper, this election certainly stirred things up a bit. Majority government -- ok. NDP opposition -- sweet. Green party actually scores a seat -- w00t.

Super Meat Boy and many other indie games are on sale on Steam right now for half-price, or you can get all 13 games for quarter-price. I got Super Meat Boy because I'm in the mood for freaky hard platforming, and Amnesia: The Dark Descent because scary games are fun.
