DF Gameplay Questions / Embarking on Buildings
« on: May 19, 2011, 11:28:19 am »
Hey; old player returning for first game after some of the new stuff has come out. I noticed I can't embark on any tiles that have other civ's work on them; is there a way around this?

I don't neccesarily want to play a full game in such, but I never figured out adventure mode and want to poke around a bit.

Magnetite and platinum and coal yeeeeeeeeeees

Oh, cool, and adamantine  ;D

I love this site, but I hate your embark profile and what's with the icons being all wrong...

It's a tileset- I wimped out and got one a few months back.

And what's wrong with my embark profile?

If anyone does build a city down there (I might yet, but I want to get in a real game with the newest features first), I bet it'll be tense as he... tense as anything for the dwarves living there. Remember... they could come at any moment...

It is clear what must be done: Build an adamantine city in hell!

I disagree. See, to my way of thinking, if hell is empty, that means the demons are no longer doing their jobs- so clearly, *someone* has to.

Thus, dwarves need to build hell.

Maybe it generated hell in place of the second cavern?
So its like
Overworld, 1st cavern, hell, 2nd cavern, 3rd cavern, magmasea/praised land.

And that no demons spawn is possibly that you have to pierce a different fun spire.
I have read on the wiki that the demons only spawn if you breach a certain spire, if you have more it could be that you hit a different one.
I used reveal and discovered that the first cavern is actually present, it merely contains very very very very few squares (try about 100 or so.)  There is no SMR except in the northeastern most embark tile.  There is only the single strand of cotton candy.(I suspect that the third cavern lies where the damp slade walls and muddy bottomless pits are.

Ok, SMR= semi-molten rock... any magma at all?

Not sure what you mean by "lack of fuel"- you have magma, you don't need fuel. Or do you just mean to make pig iron for steel?

You don't need water in case things go horribly wrong if you make sure things don't go horribly wrong.

Breaching new volcanoes is kinda tricky, cause they're vertical- no variations you can exploit. What I do is this: dig a large cistern right next to the volcano, with all mechanisms already in place. One level above the top of the cistern, have him channel out the wall of the magma tube- that way the magma falls straight into the cistern, letting your miner escape and giving your masons a chance to wall off the hallway he was standing in before it floods with magma.

Or you could just be a wimp and breach from the surface.

Getting marble isn't too difficult- just dig down a ways, you don't need that much of it. If you're worried about breaching cavern layers, you can *usually* get away with assigning most of your fortress to being masons, and walling off each cavern layer as soon as you enter into it (seven dwarves can build eight walls before most enemies can even reach them. Usually.)

Possible... except isn't hell supposed to be connected to, y'know, *all* the spires? I've got dwarves wandering around in hell right now. They've started farming. I've got a still down there. shouldn't that count as having breached the others?

Being a paranoid anti-fun builder, I'm also very happy about aquifers providing water without opening my flank up to infiltration by swimming building destroyers.

Hah, you think *that's* paranoid? I use them as a safe source of water when I can get a partial aquifer- the rest of the time I just make sure that my river water source gets routed through a line of natural-rock fortifications before entering my fortress. I use natural rock fortifications rather than constructed fortifications because I'm convinced that at any moment Today is going to program in creatures that can destroy constructions. He probably already has. They're hidden somewhere in the RAWS, waiting for me to let insufficiently filtered water into my fortress.

You can laugh now, but when your dwarves are all getting eaten by mutant toad creatures, mine will happily be being eaten by the hordes of starving dwarven babies I accidentally created in a misguided effort to deal with lack of migrants.

...god damn I'm glad I'm not a dwarf.

Yeah, the magma thing weirded me out. Anyone got the DF-hacking mods to check beneath hell? I think it must have somehow ended up *above* the magma sea.

Will modify initial post to link it there, too.

Save? :D

I did. I'll upload it if anyone wants it, but they'd have to tell me how- I'm not usually much of a file sharer.

Go to [location you have DF saved to]>data>saves. You should see a list of folders with your game worlds inside (by default, titled region 1, region 2, etc.). take the folder that has this world in it and make it into a .rar archive (look up and download WINrar if you don't have any programs to do this with). then upload the resulting .rar file to This site and post the link to your file here.

Thanks- I'd already copied and backed up the save, just wasn't sure where I could upload it. Got it uploading now, will post link as soon as it's finished (may take a while- my connection is evil.)

Save? :D

I did. I'll upload it if anyone wants it, but they'd have to tell me how- I'm not usually much of a file sharer.

It's doing a few weird things, though- I dug another shaft and still can't find the magma sea, and hell is only at 50 z levels- there's a hundred levels beneath that before I get to the actual glowing pits, and I think that the magma sea (and maybe a cavern layer or two) actually ended up *beneath* hell.

Oh, when I try to channel slade it removes the floor, but not the thing beneath... I get "Open space" above "Slade Wall". Is that normal?

Usually the first wave of demons spawns the moment you hit hell, and flies up to attack you. If no demons have shown up, is it possible you tweaked the settings of this custom world in such a way as to, oh, have the number of demon types set to "none"?

Pretty sure I didn't. I genned the world a week or two ago and can't remember exactly what I tweaked, but I'm pretty sure it was the volcano numbers- I might have added a few others, but they would have been related to trying to gen nice regions w/ volcanoes if I did; I've never tweaked demon numbers at all. So, unless my cat walked across the keyboard while I wasn't looking...

What version/release are you running?

Um... the latest, I think. Downloaded it a few days ago.

So... this isn't common, then? Demon's don't wait a while and then attack?

So, I've played earlier versions extensively, and have read quite a lot of the forums (and played one or two games) since 2010 came out, so I though I had the cosmology figured out, but what I've come across seems... our of the ordinary.

I genned a world with slightly custom settings- lots of volcanoes, I think that was it. I wandered around and found a nice-looking site- river, limestone, black sand, heavily forested. When I embarked, I noticed some shiny blue stuff that turned out to be adamantium... there was, in fact, an adamantium pipe that was open to the surface. I promptly saved the game and started digging down near it, figuring demons would eat me before I got too far, but if I hurried I might get a look at hell.

No demons have come. At about z-50 I broke into the shaft and it gave me the message about the strange hellscape I'd discovered, but still no demons. Since then I've assigned my dwarves a meeting area on the slopes of a hill in hell, started moving our supplies down there, and (why not) threw a horse in a cavern.

So... where are the demons? Do they take a while to show up? Did they all leave before I got here, as the pipe was open to the surface?

Also, when I was building the staircase to let my people into hell, it gave me the option to build it out of slade. Isn't that supposed to be impossible?

Oh, and what happened to the magma lake?

Also, whether or not I actually managed to conquer hell with seven dwarves by accident... what should I do? Build a thriving megapolis down there? Build a system of levers connected to the trade depot to lead all elven merchants into hell and leave them there? Wait five minutes for the demons to notice and devour my dwarves?

PS: Despite the game telling me I have excellent FPS (at or near cap), the horse fell *really* slowly.  Oh, and about half the erie glowing pits have mud on them. Huh?

EDIT: I've since built a still down there, and diverted the river into the adamantine tube; the first round of plump helmets is now being planted on the slade floor of hell. Now, seriously, what's going on?

EDIT 2: You can find the map at http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=3523

Hmm... that sort of works. Doesn't show me any more in dwarf mode, but I can live with that for now.
