DF Suggestions / Re: IPad version
« on: September 19, 2010, 01:49:00 am »
It might run if Toady made a completely gutted version.  No z-levels (so no caverns, no adamantine, no super fun stuff), go back to the old days when they had to build into the side of a cliff.... randomly generate a region for play but NOT an entire world.  Just an embark square with a river and a mountain to dig into.  That might be playable on an ipad, possibly.  Might need more gutting.

Of course, that will never happen.  The idea is kind of silly.  Why take everything Toady's done in the past few years and cut it out so it will fit on an ipad...? It will probably never run very well if it manages to run.

Yep.... I could not play without this.  So even though it's not being updated anymore, thank you SO MUCH, chmod and co and anyone else who worked on it....

Yes, you're right... a bad day will make you say things you wouldn't have otherwise.  You're not thinking clearly and you might want to take out some of your anger on somebody - not consciously, but it just feels like they deserve it more than usual or more than they really do.

It doesn't change my argument at all though.  We will all do this at times, the difference is realizing we've done it - I think some here have.

The only personality type that never makes mistakes is the personality type that is too afraid of failure to attempt new things in the first place. Something I've been thinking about lately, since that was me for a very long time, and I never saw it. It lets you go through life feeling a bit superior to those around you, since they're stumbling along while you always get it perfect. Then you realise you're doing the exact same shit you've been doing your whole life, walking in circles (or more appropriately, a shallow spiral), while they're stumbling because they're learning new things every day and leaving you behind.

Yes, I also used to be this person... I thought I was so much better than everyone else, criticizing others for the things I'm doing right and feeling like I'm on the right track because all these other people are stupid, I'M the one who knows how to do things right.  I think this kind of minor superiority complex went with my teenage years... well, I hope!  I definitely try these days just to put myself in other peoples' shoes.

I think there's another part to this.  People complain that "well they ask and they ask and they ask and why don't they just look! It's right there!"  I think these people are thinking more of themselves than others.  They're enjoying mocking others because it makes them feel strong.  They know something this other person doesn't know, and they think it's okay because it's plainly obvious to them.  So it should be plainly obvious to everyone, right?!

Everyone does things for a reason.  Nobody wakes up and goes "You know, I'm just going to be a huge dick today.  I'm going to go on internet forums and ask people questions that I could have found the answer to myself.  And then I am going to be really defensive when they criticize me, because I'm just a dick like that."

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: mud, water, and walls

That's really odd because in my experience, mud absolutely lasts forever and ever and ever until the fortress crumbles.

I had a particularly aggravating series of dealing with incompetent fucking humans at work today, along with a raging headache due to not having eaten in more than a day.....so...whatever. $30 of BBQ later, I'm feeling much better. Let's take a shot at an apology:

Take the asshole out of the post i made and the general tone is : People who get upset at people being 'snarky' on an internet forum, especially one where simple questions have simple answers that people get absolutely tired of answering over and over and over and over again, and resources and an abundance of information are well presented to help these people asking the questions...i have no sympathy, really none at all. It only bothers me when meddling holier-than-thou netiquette police have nothing better to do than come in and complain that someone's being 'snarky'. Welcome to the internet now go back to your geocities crochet webring ... or get over yourself.

Still rude i guess. Just goes to show you, you can feed an asshole and it's still an asshole....whatever. Fucking humans.

I understand you had a hard day, but to me, this is exactly the wrong attitude to take. There is a certain amount of hypocricy in saying that you hate when people complain about snarkiness, but that you feel it is okay to blow off the handle at them because they should have known better.

Their asking a stupid question is probably completely disassociated with the rest of their life, you know.  They are normal people who get up, go to work, come home, and are completely boggled at why people are getting angry at them on the internet.  They will not learn from you getting angry at them.  And as frustrating as it may be for you to answer the same questions over and over when they are easily accessible.... there is a simple solution.  Either don't answer, ignore it completely, or find the easily-accessible link and post it.  There, problem dealt with, with much less stress involved.

Maybe I'm overthinking this.  But it's just an issue I've been thinking about lately, as there are a lot of forums that I frequent where some (or even all) of the members have this kind of "blow up at newbies" attitude that really seems wrong to me.  Everybody makes stupid mistakes.  Everybody.  You do too.  Maybe you don't want to admit it, but you're just as stupid a human as the person who asks the stupid question in a thread where the answer is right in front of their nose.  It's just that your stupidity isn't showing up in this context, because you're more well-versed here.  You're comfortable.  The person who comes in and says "LOL HOW DUZ I INSTALL DORF" isn't.

With the default settings I frequently get magma pretty close up... which kind of irritates me.  You say you want it at 50 or less?  I've never had it more than 50 and I've been trying to figure out how to make it further down, so far nothing's working.  This last time it was at 25.  I've had it at 10 before.  With default settings. (small world... not sure if that makes a difference).

That is not true, I've had a troll bust through a floor hatch.

From below, for clarification. It wasn't on the same z-level.
Was it locked? If not then he could path through it and destroy it that way anyway. I was pretty sure hatches over entrances were used in some previous examples...

Yes it was locked, and it specifically said that he busted the hatch (I forget the exact message, I don't get many building destroyers the way I play... so it's the first time it's happened.  I learned my lesson too, ever since then it's walls and drawbridges.)

Also, can they destroy bridges or hatches from underneath?
No, only things on the same Z-level as them.

I don't think so... I think you're greatly overestimating the general population's ability to think on their feet in novel situations.

It would be easier for them to just follow the instructions, if they understood them.  It would be easier to go back two pages than wait half a day for a reply from somebody who's going to say the same thing.  It just doesnt' occur to people.  You have to be patient with them.  People either get it or they don't, and usually they don't.  Patience.

This thread is getting rude, fast....

I think you need to have patience with people who ask stupid questions that they could have found 2 pages back.  Some people just aren't accustomed to forums and it's a very different world to them.  They don't think it through that well, not because they don't want to, or they like doing stupid things, just because it doesn't occur to them.

There's no reason to call someone's vagina enflamed (???? since when is that a name to call someone? I like my vagina) and curse at them.  Like you said, they haven't paid for the software, everyone's having fun here right?  People can take things WAY too seriously in the business world but on the fun side, let's just have fun and take it easy?

I thought wagons being gone was a feature.  They sure seem to bring plenty of stuff most of the time, even without a wagon.... I assumed they used their animals now.  It really WAS kind of annoying to require a 3-tile wide path to your trade depot and not be able to block it off with a door at all, because doors can only be 2 wide (must have a wall on one side)... I was happy to find there were no more wagons in 2010.

DF Modding / Re: Make workshops prettier.
« on: July 01, 2010, 11:52:14 am »
Yeah, I was checking out the raws and I got all excited when I found a program called workshop painter... but then realized most workshops aren't in the raws.

So I could do the soapmaker's workshop... and that's about all.... :/

Even if it's hardcoded, is there not a way that anybody's figured out to make the workshops display differently?

DF Modding / Make workshops prettier.
« on: July 01, 2010, 11:08:33 am »
So the thing that has bugged me about this game from the start is the appearance of the workshops.  I can't tell one workshop from the next, I can't even tell where the workshop starts and ends because it's a mess of random characters.  I hate how the workshops look.

Does anyone think there's any way to make workshops look... you know, like a building, with a wall around the outside, or some sort of cohesive look instead of the random jumble?

Not sure if I'm being really clear here.  I'm wondering if anybody has made a pack that modifies the appearance of workshops, or if someone knows how I could go about doing this myself.  Even if I can just change the characters that represent a workshop, that would be good enough.

I generally play without graphics so somethign with just the ASCII tiles is what I'm looking for, but if somebody already made a graphics pack that modifies the workshops I'd be willing to use that, or at least check out how they did it and do it for myself in ascii.

DF Modding / Re: Antialiased tileset for 40d16+ (revisited)
« on: July 01, 2010, 01:27:52 am »
I really liked your tileset, but I only liked the ASCII version (not fond of graphics) and I can only use 16x16, so I modified your 16x16 version with elements from the 20x20 ASCII version... and just a touch of my own editing too, 'cause I have some preferences.  I made it for myself but the result, I think, is quite nice so I figured I'd just put this here.....

Oh also if anyone sees anything wrong with it, please tell me so I can fix it.  Um, this is my first time completing (editing) a tileset... lol... so maybe I missed something.
