Do soldiers still not wear boots?

2
Posted in other topic before seeing this one.

The game is really hard to play well at high resolutions, like 4k.  Even with the scaling options set on.  The game does not let you zoom in more than a little, so all of the tiles are still very small for me, the details are hard to see, and text is hard to read.  I was given the advice to change the resolution in game, but this causes something that i can only consider to be a glitch or bug where it just shrinks the fullscreen window to be 1080p, and the rest of the screen is transparent, but you can only move the mouse around in the bounds of the little 1080p screen.

This makes it super difficult to see anything in the actual fort map, but also the embark screen, making it really hard to pick an embark because the details are so tiny.

This really only leaves the option of maybe fooling around with the actual desktop resolution to lower it, or sitting really close to my TV.  Things I really don't want to do.  I really remember being able to zoom in much further and out much further than in this release.  Its never really been an issue.  Unless the increased zoom was a DF hack function, and is clouding my memory.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Steam: How to Find Volcanos for Embark?
« on: December 11, 2022, 05:28:48 pm »
Maybe lower the resolution? They're pretty obvious on my 1920x1080 monitor.

When I lower the resolution in full screen from 4k to 1080p, it doesnt actually make anything bigger, what it does is shrink the window into a box that takes up 1/4th of my screen, and then doesnt let me resize it any.

DF Gameplay Questions / Steam: How to Find Volcanos for Embark?
« on: December 11, 2022, 04:51:56 pm »
I have seen lots of people discussing how they embarked at a volcano, but when I try, I simply cannot locate any.  The world map in the steam edition is so unreasonably small that I cannot possibly make out most of the details, so I simply so cannot even see the volcanos to even know what to look for.

In the past, this was pretty easy, but now, I cant search for volcanos on embark (I think this was a DFhack feature that didnt get integrated), and the extremely small tiles make it so I cannot even see anything :(

Am I missing a search feature or setting?

Where should we be reporting issues with the steam version, or changes we want made?  Are you guys reading the suggestions forum here, or just the steam discussion forum?

Theres issues with even being able to see the text and sprites being too small before I can even try out the steam version in any real capacity.

Cant play it if I cant really see whats happening because the zoom doesn't go far enough in.  =(

Could this be changed with a mod?

DF Suggestions / Steam: Please Let Us Zoom In Much Futher

I am using a 4k TV in my living room to play this game from the couch, and even with my glasses on with max zoom, the details of almost everything are much too small to see.  It is really hard for me to play currently.

If my eyesight was any worse, it would essentially be impossible to play, rather than just difficult to play.

Probably has been addressed before, but:

Does this new version address the super annoying issue of all military dwarves losing their assigned rooms every time you send them on a mission?

Is there going to be a more user friendly animal stocks page?  I would like to be able to sort them by name, type, etc; but in the current DF version, they are all in a giant list by join date, which is kind of pointless and hard to figure out what you have.

I've been a user of Dwarf Fortress for a very long time at this point.  I wasn't around for 2D, but I was around since version 27 or 28.  I also would miss all the old keyboard support, but at the same time, I have played Rimworld, Prison Architect, and other similar games that, while I wouldn't call them clones, are obviously heavily inspired by Dwarf Fortress and wouldn't exist in their current states otherwise.

I think one of the reasons those games are so easily doable with a mouse is because theyre simpler and smaller.  Theres only one Zlevel in those games, so they never had to solve how to dig out a 100 Z level stair well to the magma layer.  They never need to compensate for people who draw huge layer sized mining operations where the entire layer is criss-crossing tunnels. They dont need to suddenly construct 50 bedrooms.  But they do have compensatory controls to make their own limited options easy.  For example, if you build a bedroom in rimworld and have it set up how you want, you can use the copy and paste tool to drop five more right next to it.

Does the premium version have tools like this?  For example, if I can designate a bedroom, then copy and paste it a few times, then that will be faster than even the keyboard controls currently are.  Once they are dug out, can I then place all the room's furniture I need, then copy and paste those into the other bedrooms?  I don't want you to actually just become a clone of other games, but all these other games have these Quality of Life features for a reason.

Does breaking into the caverns still essentially destroy your FPS?  I remember the game losing a ton of FPS back in the day if you broke into them, and it was one of the reasons you didn't want to do that.  Has this already been mitigated, and I am so stuck in my old ways that I never realized it?  Will the steam release include performances fixes for these sorts of common FPS losses?

use lime green to get toady's attention if this question is meant for him =]
i i break into the caverns in almost every fort eventually and haven't noticed any significant drop in fps, but that might just be me not paying enough attention.

Thank you, I changed it.

I know this may be a question that's been answered in ancient times, but Toady discussing wanting to provide us with more incentive to break into the cavern layers made me realize I don't think I ever broke into them more than once or twice since they were introduced a million years ago, and I always add extra normal layers to the map before the caverns can spawn.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: How much embark points everyone uses? v2.0
« on: November 24, 2020, 05:14:34 pm »
Not sure if I have seen anyone else do this, but I always use the standard number of points and bring 5 picks and 2 axes.  This lets me plan half the fort out and have it almost done by the first migrant wave.

Bags of sand are 1 point (i think?) and come with a free bag.

My last evil rain embark allows me to confirm that cans can, in fact, melt.

Cans?  Is this a mod?  Or did I miss something in the menus for the metalsmith’s forge?

He probably means cats
