DF Gameplay Questions / Penning Trade Agreements as the Capital
« on: September 25, 2023, 02:40:49 pm »
The King named my settlement the Capital and then took his entourage and left after three years.  My site is designated the Mountainhome, but my highest level noble is the Duke now.  At the same time I still have the Outpost Liaison living with me.  Is there a way to get the Liaison to, well, liaise?  I like being able to request "impossible" items like Giant Cave Spider Silk Goblets and gemstone Altars as fun things but he no longer meets with my mayor.

!!SCIENCE!!

I have no contact with Elves or Humans, but there are settlements of both about five days march away:

I think it's time they get to know us.  I'm going to send a squad over to say, "hi" demand tribute:

Success!  They promise a load of goods come next Summer.

But what about the hippies Elves? Hello Elves:

Contact with tree huggers Elf Barony secured:

Fast forward to next Spring and who's this jerk noble?

+<<*SUCCESS*>>+

!!SCIENCE!! has shown us with a gentle application of military through a mission to demand tribute, you too can make trade contact with civilizations you don't have access to at the beginning of the game!

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Making first contact
« on: September 19, 2023, 09:12:42 am »
What is the best way of making contact with civilizations you don't have contact with yet?  My current fort has no contact with friendly humans or elves so I'm getting no seasonal traders outside my local dwarf civ.

Is the tribute mission the best way to do this?  I'm looking to remain as neutral as possible with them.  I want good relations with them to get wagons quickly.

Also, how do tributes from evil civilizations work?  I'm down for some !!SCIENCE!! with some goblins or kobolds but wasn't sure if that would increase the amount of sieges if I demand tribute from Goblin sites that don't know about me yet.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Who is your favorite citizen?
« on: September 05, 2023, 12:06:39 am »
Is there a citizen in your current fort that is special to you for some reason?

In my current fort Niya-cat has to be my favorite:

She is a 61 year old cougar woman stalking my fort and looking for romance. She also happens to be a scholar of anatomy.  Younger dwarf men watch out!

My last human caravan was distracted by a swarm of Gray Langurs trying to steal things.  After dispatching the monkey menace, the caravan got a bit aimless and just wandered off at the end of the season leaving all of their goods in the depot.  But all of the items are still marked for trade in the depot.  If I "tidy up" my depot by seizing those spare goods will I anger my tall neighbors despite them no longer being present?  Would something like deconstructing the depot be better?

Do I just need to dwarf up and do it for SCIENCE?

I'm wondering if sticking a rank or two into dodge as a skill would help mitigate this.  !!Science!! Friday:  Set my woodcutter after some trees and check logs for injuries and possibly dodging.  Then again, maybe I'm just trading being hit in the head with trees for jumping off cliffs or into water to drown...

I've had a couple of spires topped with that.  Mining it produces nothing but a bigger HFS release if you pierce the spire with it.  Not sure if it's a bug or just a hell material.

DF Suggestions / Re: add wear to stockpiles for cloathing.
« on: May 09, 2012, 12:06:46 pm »
Seconded, with clothes affecting mood and clothes never really being consumed, this leads to an explosion of the items that really have to be micromanaged tediously.  I have to specify dumps on individual items in the stocks or trade all my clothes and stumble my way through selling them off one by one.

Organizing the old out would allow you to push them to a trading stockpile, or move them together for mass magma dumping or smashing.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Oh dear.... the queen has arrived...

Being the queen she must be the source of vamparism in the dwarven holds.  Shove her down a well with spiked bottom and create an army of the night with her pure blood.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Advice on moving Fire Clay
« on: May 07, 2012, 03:30:18 pm »
So does the clay category just not highlight in the stockpiles and can be enabled or disabled?  I have the opposite problem.  I want to keep my metal smelters and kilns supply piles separate, but workers keep hauling clay into my metal only stockpiles.  How do I forbid clay in an economic stone stockpile?

So the fortress celebrates Goblin Christmas and I get a few injuries on some good solders and a legendary armorer that somehow missed my burrowing.  The get taken to the hospital, no problem.  Except Goblin Christmas came in Winter.  All the ponds are frozen, so no way to wash them or offer them water from above.  The miners say it's not a problem they'll just cut through into the cave and we can make a well...  Guess what notification I forgot?  Right after they punch through what decides to say 'Hi' via syndrome dust and the ability to fly right up the well shaft right before it's finished? A forgotten beast.  Who dusts my crossbowmen in the stair shaft goes right up into the dorms right before dying.  Miasma pouring dwarf-puddles everywhere.

Yeah, you'd think I'd remember the FB announce...

DF General Discussion / Pleasant surprises in newer versions
« on: August 07, 2011, 11:39:57 pm »
So what are some fun things you've found out as you've moved to the more recent versions?

Today I found out serrated blades in my weapon traps make excellent troll shavers.  That's right Goblin Christmas now comes with yarn and fabric as well as goblinite.

I also found some unicorn hair thread in my stocks today.  They're officially the gift that keeps on giving at the butcher shop.  Now I just need to see if I can make some unicorn cloth.  It's not yarn, but it's also not thread... What loom task will net me some sparkly fabric?  I want my units to flatten the goblins with shiny silver hammers and sparkly unicorn cloaks.  It makes the beatings feel more humiliating.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Joyous Wilds, Haunting whatever
« on: March 13, 2011, 07:15:16 pm »
It's more FUN to set out in these biomes.  My current fortess a few tiles is Joyous shrubland, a few tiles Terrifying mountain, and a few tiles Untamed woodlands.  Between zombie giant eagles from above and zombie giant cave spiders from below, it's actually really interesting.  Just beware the tons of miasma underground undead generate.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What do I do with all these rocks?!
« on: March 13, 2011, 07:09:43 pm »
Build a giant fortress atop a sea of magma.

Then drop it in.

They called us daft to build a fortress over the magma sea, but we did it anyway, just to show them.  It sank into the magma.  So we built a second one!  It sank into to the magma.  We build a third one! It burned down, collapsed, and then sank into the magma.  But the fourth one stayed up!  And that's what you'll get, Urist, the strongest fortress in these isles!
