DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Wells and Mysteriously Flooding Rooms
« on: February 10, 2011, 11:45:30 am »
You sure you didn't hit an aquifer? There are some maps where water is within stone or dirt naturally. When you dig around them, infinite water comes out of them. There's several ways of dealing with them, but not all of them are pretty. Then again, one of my favorite fortresses in 40d was with my dwarves battling a huge aquifer where they wanted to build their housing area. It involved tons of pumps and a mountain covered in windmills.

I don't think their is a real point in trading with a race that only uses copper weapons.
I have yet to find any copper in my embark, so I'd gladly trade with a copper heavy race for their wares to melt. In fact, the only source of silver I have is galena which isn't too bad. I have tons of coal, though!

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: So. Tauntrum Spiral.

Did you have a jail?  Usually they'll try to imprison someone first.  If there's no jail or its full, they'll give them a (usually lethal) beating instead.

LEGENDARY JAIL! My prisons are generally nicer than my noble quarters. Masterwork chains surrounded by masterwork beds and a personal well made from masterwork parts. There's also a 1x1 square for booze storage and another for food. The nicer the jail, the happier they are when they're released which helps you out when it comes to spirals.

Metal bars is probably what he's looking to use.

If they can't get in, I believe they'll eventually get bored and leave. At least that's how it was in older versions.

DF Modding / Re: Runesmith - A DC like tool

I know this, defeating a later siege doesn't work. I had an early siege I wasn't prepared to deal with so I tested out the handy Genocide Button on it. Since then, I've defeated about 5 ambushes and 2 sieges. I'm still flagged as Siege. I'm contemplating going as long as possible with this fortress, locking everything away in locked rooms and abandoning.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Do you have a doomsday lever?
« on: August 28, 2010, 10:32:54 pm »
I've been working on a self contained bunker 80Z levels below the ground which can house around 20 dwarves. I'm sealing every level from the magma sea to the gound level. There's flood gates on all the cavern floors linked to a lever in the bunker. All the caverns are connected via stairs, channels, and so on. The bunker has a water reactor connected to an unfinished 150z level pump stack. In the event I release too much FUN, I pull the lever and flood the entire underworld. Pull the lever again, fire up the water reactor in the bunker, and hopefully it pumps all the water back out. So, I have a doomsday lever and an UNdoomsday lever.

DF Suggestions / Re: Dwarf Fortress Online Multiplayer

The big problem is the passage of time. Worldgen creates a number of dwarven civs that could each have one player behind them to keep things a little more tidy. Once out of civs, the remaining players hopping in can wind up Adventurers in that world. It would make things more interesting for those who play adventure mode, so long as they like walking.

Of course, even the Spore content upload thing has the problem with the passage of time for a fortress.

DF Suggestions / Re: Blunderbuss?

I was thinking more of the Fun involved in setting up and maintaining a gunpowder factory.

Or the folly of sending in a squad of blunderbuss dwarves with powder kegs on their backs against a dragon.

That's a good question. It seems to me the human towns are fairly functional, but the dwarven cities really don't seem to be. I can't see how the fortresses in Adventure Mode would survive a siege or a FB/Collosus showing up. All they need to do is walk in the top.

I just kind of wonder if that's how Toady makes his fortresses.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Is it possible to electrify water?
« on: August 04, 2010, 02:52:36 am »
A thunderbolt is lightning that produces thunder. Not all lightning produces thunder that can be heard on the ground.

I'd personally rather have steam power than electrical power, since steam seems to fit dwarves a little more than electricity. After all, magma can't produce electricity without steam. Unfortunately, I don't think Toady wants to add steam to the game. Even if he did, who has the excess trees and coal laying around to keep a steam engine going? Of course, magma steam power would negate the need for coal and wood steam power but that's if you've found magma.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: How much stockpile area do you allocate?
« on: July 31, 2010, 05:47:05 am »
I have a whole level in my 4x4 embark fortress devoted to metal. I have another floor devoted to stone. I burn through wood too fast to have much space allocated for it. I have multiple gem stockpiles on various other levels.

The Clean Self bug along will all the hospital bugs. The Dungeon Master would be nice also.

I never considered the traps as something obvious to the naked eye. They pop out on would be invaders when they try to pass by the trap. Goblins aren't the smartest of creature, either. They run in crazed with the idea of killing dwarves, they're not going to be sneaking through looking for traps.

Personally, I think TRAP_AVOID is used too often in the game for creatures. A Forgotten Beast that rises up from a cavern that hasn't been seen in decades or centuries shouldn't be as trap saavy as they are. So, if they work on goblins, I say use them on goblins.

Even better, trading with goblins could yield wonderful mechanics like being able to buy caged dwarves since goblins capture dwarves. It would be a nice addition to the completely random migrant thing.

It would be a great perk to totally trouncing a wave of goblins with very few or no dead dwarves. A liason shows up, asks for peace and establishes trade.
