DF General Discussion / Re: Epic Fort Survivors?
« on: October 02, 2010, 11:18:30 am »
In one of my earlier fortresses, I wound up losing everyone, except a bald, fat, creepy looking child. That child hung on for 3 years before a migration wave actually succeeded in making it into the fortress. The 21+ z level pit traps I had in the entrance hallway kept the kid safe for the 3 years, but the gobbos outside kept killing the new immigrants.

Was truly epic.

(The kid later died to falling into said pit, and in tribute to his death, I melted him in magma.)

DF General Discussion / Re: Anyone else get mocked by their wife over DF?
« on: September 18, 2010, 03:58:00 pm »
Heh, my wife is a recently retired bleeding edge (Server first) WoW raider. :> So she only gives me shit about the fact DF is all ascii.

(Of course, I can't blame her, since I used to be her raid leader before I stopped playing WoW 3-4 months ago).

Magma fixes everything.

5
1) Dworfs who sleep in their own damn beds.
2) Optimization.
3) The ability to prioritize certain actions, (Hey Urist McFucknuts, go pull that lever NOW before magma floods us all!)
4) Being able to strangle things with their own guts.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: The amazing power of goblins.
« on: September 12, 2010, 01:34:37 am »
I should have mentioned, they were my archer squad, (Why they were up on the ramparts, they were doing their rounds). I probably should have also mentioned, they were my retarded archer squad, since they never bothered to shoot up at the gobbos.

They had another staircase down behind them which they ignored. Christ these dorfs are thick.

It's ok. I got so annoyed I purposely tunneled into the volcano just to see what would happen.

GLORIOUS RED MOVING DEATH! It cheered me up.

DF Gameplay Questions / The amazing power of goblins.
« on: September 11, 2010, 03:33:15 am »
So...can someone explain to me how, 5 goblins, all equipped with melee weapons are able to keep 20 dorfs pinned down on a rampart?

I just had 20 idiot dorfs die from fucking thirst, because of 5 goblins, 11 zlevels above them, without a clear path to them, threatened them so much, they couldn't go down the stairs to the courtyard. Seriously...its shit like this that makes me hate this fucking game at times.

(However, knowing that when they die, I'm just going to stick everyone into a magma pool and let them all die slowly and horribly, restores my love for the game.)

EDIT: And to add insult to injury, their deaths just kicked off a spiral of madness, death and destruction. I want the ability to kill shit from afar with just my presence.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Garbage dumps
« on: September 07, 2010, 12:28:40 pm »
If I remember correctly, you want to designate that a pit, not a garbage dump.

Dumps have to have floors, pits must not. (IIRC)

Ok, that makes a lot more sense.

Time to try again and do it right this time. :> Thanks all.

DF Gameplay Questions / I hates the pump stack!
« on: September 04, 2010, 04:03:16 pm »
So, I've been reading everything I can get my greedy little eyes on pump stacks. Trying to get my little mini water-fall to work. And yet, it refuses.

I've got a 3 wide hallway coming into the fortress. I've got a channel above, land a channel below. Both channels go across the hallway fully. The channel below is covered with floor grates so people can walk through the mist. The water below runs off to the south. At the run off I have a pump stack, pumping from the south to the north, atop this, one zlevel up, I have another stack pumping from the north to the south, and then I have a series of walls that basically duct the water over to the top channel, so that the water-falls down, and we start the process again. I covered the top pump stack with a windmill, and the rest of the whole contraption with a roof, (So no bird poop gets into the waterfall.)

The top pump, is active, works fine, requires 10 of the 40 power I'm drawing.
The bottom pump is NOT active at all and refuses to play nice.

If I set a dorf to pump the bottom pump manually, the whole contraption works great. That tells me the pump stack is built correctly, it's just that power doesn't seem to be transmitting down from the top pump to the bottom pump, and I'm at a complete loss as to why.

Any ideas oh mighty brains of dorfy goodness?

I must have all the retarded military dorfs.

I went the danger room route, and wound up killing half my squad on wooden spikes, and them in iron gear. (5 traps with 1 spear each with room around each trap to dodge into an empty space). The very first pull of the lever wound up puncturing the lung of the leader, who was wearing iron breastplate. I must make REALLY good wooden spears.

Went the gobbo training dummy route, and an unarmed, wounded, (broken leg, broken rib, broken arm) gobbo killed one dorf, crippled another and just generally beat the snot out of the other 3.

Every single time they get into a fight with anything other then each other, I wind up with dead/maimed/useless dorfs. I've become a master at creating quick squads since I'm constantly remaking them anytime they get near a fracas. Useless gits.

Thank god for traps.

Another fix is if you put him a small 3x3 room, lock the door, and then slowly fill the room with magma.

Wait 30 minutes, and the problem should solve itself.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Getting into DF
« on: August 25, 2010, 03:00:22 am »
As someone who just recently came into loving the Dwarf FUN, let me give you 2 pieces of advice that will make your learning curve a little less steep.

1) Keep the wiki open all the time. It will answer all your questions.
1.a) Keep this forum open all the time also. It will answer all your questions that 1) didn't.

2) Realize, you will kill many dorfs, you will dump lots and lots of forts, you will restart a LOT, and you will screw things up on a constant basis. This however is the best way to learn. I've found that with every embark, I learned something new. Every time I leave a fortress, I've taken away some trick, or piece of knowledge to make the next one go smoother/faster/funner.

Keep with it, it's a long, fun journey.

DF Gameplay Questions / Frozen water in Warm Climes
« on: August 24, 2010, 12:43:31 am »
So here's a weird noob question.

Is it normal to find frozen rivers/water in WARM climes?

I've had to re-embark 20-30 times now because I'd get to a warm climate, and the water will all be frozen solid.
