DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What's going on in your fort?

After sending twenty dwarves out to face down a Marsh Titan, which they successfully slew without casualties, the season changed... And this happened:

I think this is the first time I've triggered a shift in the era. Although, seeing as my military has been wiping out any hostile invaders, it's hardly surprising!

In light of the latest siege being obliterated by the Dwarven caravan, I've decided it's time to train the military. So I'm melting down all iron items that aren't immediately required for the military's armour, and forging silver warhammers. Galena is, apparently the only thing that the fortress really has access to. Oh, and tetrahedrite, but that won't do well for weapons. Cue a dwarven tidal wave flooding forth from the fortress to pick up whatever items the caravans might have dropped.

Better hope there aren't any goblins out there.

After some work, a pipe between the cistern at the dorm floor and the hospital/public district has been dug, and the floodgate from the cistern opened. Soon, the fortress will have a safe, new source of fresh water...

... That is, of course, if I managed to handle the pressure properly. Its been a while since I last played DF, but hopefully I still remember the way to decrease pressure in water. If not, I'll soon find out. If something does happen, I'll hold Meng Testtreaty the Doctor Dwarf responsible, since he pulled the lever.

Also, dwarves keep turning up dead, drained of blood, so obviously there's a vampire on the loose. But at the same time, it does take care of the population problem. Oh, and it doesn't seem to be affecting the population adversely. Yet.

EDIT: Surprise! Pressure caused water to shoot up into the hospital. Meng, wisely understanding it was his own fault, decided to sit down in his office, flooded with water, and stare blankly at the wall as he waited for the water to drain.

Used Fastdwarf to speed up the construction of Paintmagic, since I was lagging behind. Now that the fort is up and running properly, I'm turning my attention to the overall layout.

Paintmagic is constructed around a central room. Top floor has the dormitories suspended between four pillars(yes, dwarves can fall off the ledges). Below the dorms are the workshops and the founder quarter. Nothing is suspended in the space there, however. Below that level are the stockpiles. There's a shortcut from the forges on the workshop level to the metal goods stockpiles, for ease of access. And finally, there's the entrance hall at the lowest floor.

The entrance hall branches off into the deeper mines, and to the living quarters with the dining hall(which, too, features an open roof so those on the entrance hall floor can look into the dining hall).

I've read in an engraving somewhere that my queen is a vampire.
Also I've had a vampire chained for murder. He has gone stark raving mad. I guess he'll sit around in that cell for all of eternity. Or get killed by goblins or a Forgotten Beast or something.
I vote that you keep him chained, locked up and sealed behind a temple of traps. Have your dwarves engrave a warning of what will happen, should he ever be freed.

... Somehow, this;

I'm not sure how, but a peregrine falcon is scaring the living booze out of the Dwarves in Paintmagic. Which is problematic, since right now the grand hall is split up through four floors, meaning if someone is frightened and falls off the dormitories in the top, they'll fall down four levels and end up in the meeting hall.

... On the other hand, that might actually scare the dwarves enough to take care of it.

EDIT: Decided to send one of the founders, a Ranger, and a Cook after it. They all have something to gain from it, I figure.

EDIT2: http://i.imgur.com/fqYXj8y.png Well, that takes care of that.

Three migrants braved the wilderness to reach Diamondclears, dodging between walking corpses and Hamster Men. This brings the fortress up to ten inhabitants, one of which nearly got killed by a honey badger corpse during the first few weeks. Erush seems to have recovered from that with just a broken hand, and even though I set up an emergency field hospital, the bugger is too stubborn to actually get tended to by the doctor. And the doctor is too busy to diagnose him anyway.

Neat. I'll take it in use immediately. The smoothed floor looks awesome, too.

Is that a bug, or is the game supposed to use that?

Embarked on a 4x4 zone to check the performance(might be a good place to learn the new update too), and saw this in the announcements:

... Not surprising, really.

Special resources are being transported to the metalworks now. The four dwarves down there should be able to find some use for it, if not to dress the entire Hallcolumn army in blue. If not that either, then forging statues of it and placing them at the front gates should create some extra points for the entire fortress.

Ruletrumpet is now a county, and there's a caravan stuck in the airlock. It refuses to leave. Any ideas?

"Oddom Tobulkudust, Bowyer is taken by a fey mood!"
"Oddom Tobulkudust, Bowyer has claimed a Bowyer's Workshop!"

Last time a dwarf got a mood, the result was this:

Not sure I dare be positive about this event. Here's what he claimed:
  • 1x Wood
  • 1x Rough Yellow Jaspers
  • 1x Rope Reed Fiber Cloth
I'm very interested in seeing what the Rope Reed Fiber Cloth will be used for.

EDIT:

Spoiler: The Artifact (click to show/hide)
... Should have guessed.

So, the population is down to exactly 100. But in the midst of the chaos, I see the mention of a Forgotten Beast in the announcements. I scroll through them, and right enough, Ino has broken through the gate in the caverns and has charged up the stairwell. Of course, he made the mistake of attacking a fortress full of tantrumming dwarves, so he is getting a severe beating right now. It'll be slightly difficult for the four dwarves in the Urist Time Capsule, but I think the fortress will survive.

Update: Yep, the Forgotten Beast has been slain by an Axe Lord and an Axedwarf that happened to be patrolling the dormitories.
