I just had my militia captain(copper helm and mail shirt) hit 8 or 9 times by a Goblin master bowman. Medical screen says he has "lost ability to stand" and lots of other nasty stuff but it doesnt stop him from partying around the clock or killing more Goblins during their annual sieges...

Happens at times, the poor recruit that stood next to him was hit only twice, in both legs, but bled out quick.

Hey, nothing can keep dorf from his/her beer and party.

Check his traits: he might be superdwarvenly tough or basically unbreakable.  I had a dwarf lose a baby and an arm, drop into bed exhausted, get back up and kill 17 goblins holding axe and shield in the same hand. She was epic.

Lol, would love to see both shield and wep on same hand working in RL. :P

And god damn Mike. You are truly doing amazing job on the graphics.
big thumbs up for you. :D

Maybe, since Toady One announced he already has a large number of bugs fixed for a new release, DFG will come out after this next release is out, simply to save Mike Mayday time converting the data from 31.18 to 31.19 and THEN from 31.19 to 31.20?

That's only a guess though. I'm super-eager nonetheless: I like the repack anallyst posted but still would like the official release of DFG.

Yar, better wait a bit, so dont have to do the job twice.

Thanks for the reply though. :D

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: The king has arrived but...
« on: September 11, 2010, 01:45:37 am »
My fort just turned into the mountainhome and the king arrived with his full entourage. Sounds all sweet and nice but there is a minor problem. Everyone of them are just friendly units and not my own dwarves. All they do is chill out at the edge of the map. Did I hit a bug of some kind or do they turn to my units at some point? If they don't is there a way through some dwarven magic (cheat) make them do that?

Holy crap. How did you manage to get king in 12d? I been playing on so many different fortress with 150 or 200 dwarves for up to 15 years and not a single king or queen or even a tax collector has shown up-

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: hunting 2010
« on: September 11, 2010, 01:04:48 am »
When you start a new fortress, by default, hunters have assigned to them 100 bolts in the military ammo screen (as of 31.12, anyways).

Hunters need a few things to hunt:
  • Hunting labor enabled
  • non-forbidden bolts NOT IN A BIN
  • quiver
  • crossbow
  • available game
  • not restricted to a burrow (or, burrow needs to have huntable game)

If you have had a lot of combat (ie, goblins dieing, merchant guards dieing, etc), then you MIGHT have bows around. Any new hunters might grab a BOW instead of a crossbow, and then they require ARROWS, which you cannot make. But other than that bit of equipment swapping, all the other conditions remain true.

Right now, dwarves cannot get ammunition that is in bins. So make sure your ammo stockpiles don't allow bins if you want your crossbowdwarves and hunters grabbing more ammo.

Hmmm, my dwarves are taking ammo from bins in my ammo stockpile. You sure about that?

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Farming is so SLOW! What am I doing wrong?
« on: September 02, 2010, 02:06:33 pm »
Really Khift?  Thats not right.  My I7 handles that with no prob. All I get is a small drop from 100 fps to around 75-90 depending on what is specifically happening.  I think you should work with your print buffers, cuz 8fps is really wrong for an I7
I honestly couldn't tell you why it's so slow. I know the map has a ridiculous amount of z-levels (162 in total) but no more walkable space than any other map. I honestly suspect that my installation of DF is somehow screwed; my next map I'll be using a different tileset than Mayday's to see if it helps any.

Also, what does printing have to do with DF?

Sorry, I wasnt very clear, I meant this from the Init files:
Code: [Select]
These settings can have a significant impact on frame rate, especially for people that have slow frame rates on the title screen.  Available modes are 2D, 2DSW, 2DASYNC, STANDARD, PARTIAL:<number>, ACCUM_BUFFER, FRAME_BUFFER and VBO. The number after PARTIAL refers to how many frames it will redo a printed tile before skipping it, so you might try increasing it a bit if you have flickering when PARTIAL is set.  Please note that any of these combinations might cause frame rates to drop significantly or cause unpleasant side effects like flickering.

By and large, 2D should be the most reliable, while STANDARD has a good combination of speed and reliability. However, all 2D modes are normally far slower than even STANDARD, which may be the slowest OpenGL mode.

2DASYNC may be slightly more responsive than 2D on a multi-core machine, but this has recently become doubtful due to improvements to the other modes.

Linux/OS X users may also use PRINT_MODE:TEXT for primitive ncurses output.

[PRINT_MODE:STANDARD]
Mode examples:
PRINT_MODE:2D
PRINT_MODE:TEXT
PRINT_MODE:FRAME_BUFFER
PRINT_MODE:PARTIAL:0
[SINGLE_BUFFER:NO]

Hmmm. IS there somewhere a place where i can read what each of those setting do? Or what they mean.

I quite easily get around 150-200 FPS with over 200 dwarves. It really depends on the size of the embark and your fortress design. There are a lot of things you can do to massively improve your FPS. There are also a lot of things you can do to kill your FPS.

Hmmmm. I think we need a glimpse to your fortress layout. :D With 125 dwarfs i get around 75 fps max. Average is about 50. But even with 50 fps the game is painfully slow to play.

I echo the above sentiments of having fewer farmers. My single legendary +5 planter with a 192 square farm produces more food than my 220 dwarf fortress can even PROCESS, let alone eat. If I were to allocate all of my labor to the food industry I still wouldn't have enough haulers to deal with the sheer mass of product he produces; I don't really have a need to, though, because I have 17,000 lavish meals built up and the entire industry has been off for years now.

Go with one planter. Press (o) and then (h) to make sure that only he harvests because harvesting gives you skill in planting and you want him to level up as fast as possible. Once he hits legendary you can revert that and let other dwarves harvest for him, though.

Also, 192 tiles is way overkill. Most of that went towards my cloth industry, but even still half or more of it went to food and this lead directly to my massive overstock of food.

Totally offtopic. But what kinda frame rates you get with 220 dwarf fortress? Would nee mega computer to process that with more than 15 fps

Cleartask is only meant to be used immediately after reclaiming (i.e. before you unpause) - using it in an active fortress is asking for trouble, since it can easily disrupt all of your active tasks. I did some testing on a fortress with legitimately active tasks and it didn't seem to cause immediate problems (aside from some jobs cancelling due to "job item lost or destroyed"), though it's possible something else may be going on in your case. By any chance are you running the tool while your game is unpaused?

It's far more likely that the items your dwarves won't collect are owned by other dwarves who don't have bedrooms with sufficient storage space (either a cabinet or lots of floor space).

Hmmm. the items loitering around are mostly from migrants that arrive and i change their jobs. And suddenly they drop half of their stuff and leave it there. Have to try assigning them room and see if that works.  But some times there seem to be whole set of wardrobe dropped from dwarf for no visible reason in middle of their running around.

Hey guys, does number of caged animals have an effect on FPS?
cause I've got something like 10 pages of animals, but they're all caged
I'm going on a mass slaughetering spree, converting all  10 of my craftsdwarves into my butcheries...
will this help my FPS at all, or am I just wasting my time?
I've already dammed my river, drained my moats, and put graphical FPS to 5, but I still can't get anything over 10-12 FPS
any tips?

Caged creatures shouldn't effect your fps, its their running around everywhere that makes more work for your cpu and drops your fps.

Some things i've found that improve my fps
Wall off any areas that your dwarfs dont need to go to. - like long corridors that dont lead to anything - wall them off.

Try to avoid building rooms or corridors that have multiple exits or entrances, one way systems work best i.e you enter the kitchen area - you have to leave by the same way you came in.

Avoid vast amounts of stockpiles, this creates more cpu problems when you have a large amount of dwarfs looking for an item, they (your comp) checks every stockpile for it.
Trade off or give away any stuff you dont need to caravans, more items on your map is more work for your cpu.

Get used to using ramps instead of stairs for z level movement - ramps are more restrictive so less choices for dwarfs to path to different tiles. Huge z level staircases are apparently quite bad for your fps if you have 100 dwarfs using it frequently.

Avoid using doors - these slow down the pathfinding as well

Hmm, i wonder how staircases can lower fps more than ramps as they basically do same job.
Same for doors. Would think that they would lower fps if you put doors and lock them. As they are easy to open if you need to go to walled area again for some reason.

Been trying to use DF clear task on items that are accumulating all over the fortress and dwarfs wont claim, dump or retrieve items no matter what i do. Cleartask worked fine until recently that it has started to crash DF after 15 seconds of use. I wonder whats going on.

Ahhh. breaching cavern must be the reason then. Though one could all but wonder that solid stone wall should keep spores away.
