Hardware store axes are machined from a slab of steel, while a hand forged one will be able to stand up to a lot more.

My current setup is an old charcoal grill filled with lump charcoal, and instead of a classical bellows or even an automatic forge blower, I use a hairdryer. A little messy, but it works. The charcoal grill was probably 15 dollars, and I got the lump charcoal at 8 dollars a bag from a hardware store. Forges are easy, it's anvils that are pricey.

Go to a new town, and press escape and (hopefully) it will say "Retire or Rest a while as a peasant" as if you weren't in a place that wanted you dead. It did this for me. Select that, then select that character again and go back into the game. If it works for you like it did me, all things are forgotten. If it doesn't work, then it must've been a fluke. Also, sorry for necromancy.

Gisep Crowknife the Youthful Copper Roses of Hoisting, you will be missed.
