Halflight Lance Projector
The Halflight is the embodiment of an individuals gut reaction and instincts overtaking their better judgement and decision-making processes.

It is a shoulder-fired break-action rifle with a one-inch bore firing impact-fuse ammunition.  Testers describe the use of the weapon akin to being struck by lightning - there's an enormous flash and boom, and you may very well find yourself on your back in serious pain.  The rounds exit the barrel with roughly the same force and speed as a run-away freight train...that is to say, not very fast, but very deadly.  The impact fuse relies on the French technology for direct-impact detonation.  A steel hammer on the end of a spindle protrudes from the end of the round and only detonates when hitting a target flat and square; deflections or deaccelerations do not result in detonation.  Moisture or high humidity results in the CP-270 ammunition fuses going bad and reaching prohibitively high rates of failure-to-detonate.  On the other hand, if the round manages to actually hit its target, detonation tends to be a bit over-kill.

The barrel is without rifling and as a result (not to understate things here) the Halflight can be "less-than-accurate".  Luckily, the ball-bearing and explosive composition makes near-misses an acceptable outcome, if the fuse doesn't fail.  The sheer concussive force of firing has been known to stress and weaken the hinge. Although our testers stopped before such a failure could occur, the Halflight's break-action will inevitably fail after a dozen or so rounds have passed through it.  Additionally, there is no extractor for the enormous brass casing, and the brass tends to tightly form-fit the internals and become hard to remove.  An "extractor rod" is provided with the weapon: a broom handle, with which the user can poke the spent round back out.  The Halflight does not come with sights, and the user must simply aim down the barrel's length.

Ursus Brachi
Rifle Design: 'Halflight' Lance Projector
Ammunition: 1 caliber x 270 grains, 17' overall length, ~3lbs overall weight (Internal Designation: Cete Pernicies-270, or CP-270)

In principal, the HalfLight is a single shot, break action rifle. This is unexciting. The exciting part is that its caliber is 1 and it fires a three pound projectile, barbed, clad in a fragmenting case, and with an impact fuze on a short timer.

Designed from our extensive experience hearing about other people complaining about the inhumanity of whaling equipment, the Halflight is a refined version of the Bomb Lance whaling tool - with more specific inspiration taking from the Grudchos-Eggers rifle. The rifle itself weighs approximately 1 and one-quarter score pounds- owing to the enormous reinforcement of the chamber necessary to reliably contain the cartridge. After several broken clavicles, extensive horsehair padding has been added to the skeletal metal buttstock. A side effect of this high weight is that the Halflight also acts remarkably well as a strength training tool and a field usable sledgehammer. 

Unlike more primitive whaling tools, the Halflight fires a cartridged projectile for easy of carrying, with a short sleeve outside the cartridge at the projectile neck used to engage the slow rifling of the barrel. At 17" inches in projectile length, we recommend that soldiers carry these from the belt in a sort of 'grass skirt' configuration. Each cartridge carries a charge of 4.5 drams (Apothecary) of propellant powder, which serves to frighten the enemy with the force of its detonation as well as hearten allies with its thunderous roar. The projectile itself has a weight of 1500 grams, with 600 grams serving as structural, barbed tip, and fuzing, 300 grams serving as ball-bearing shrapnel, and the remaining 600 grams given over to a dynamite charge (approximately 3 standard sticks).

While ideas have been raised for the usage of White Phosphor charges or Prussic Acid within the projectile, these have been deemed beyond scope and will be hopeful additions for the future.
