I really dont think that what casual players want, can effectively be delivered, no matter how savvy you are with UI design.
This. I've read plenty of complaints (elsewhere on the internet, long before the itch.io and steam announcements) about the game being "too complicated" or too hard to get into. Some of them say that the articles in the wiki about engineering a well, for example, are too hard. The problem is that those articles are seriously about as easy to follow as you can get. The issue is that the engineering process itself is tricky.

There's some level of IQ gating that's going to make this game more inaccessible than most. Even for other complicated games like X3: Terran Conflict, you can at least say "It's a space game where you fly around and trade or fight. You can buy new ships, automate them, and even eventually make your own faction. You can do almost anything in it!". That gives that kind of game an easier elevator pitch, and it's closer to the kinds of experiences the average person can understand. I'm sure we all know that if someone can't understand what something is, that they'll get hostile about it and be the negative introduction for many other people.

This isn't the same kind of simplistic game that people are looking for. I think people's unjustified false expectations coming to grips with the reality of the game will cause a lot of damage.

I got eaten by a giant ant. Or webbed by a giant jumping spider. I don't remember. Earth Defense Force 4.1 can dole out really fast deaths where it's hard to keep track of things.

The last time I waded into the Linux waters, which was years back, the thing that stopped me was a lack of printer compatibility. I couldn't find drivers for my printer, so none of the work I was doing could go to any other computer or person.

I'd check for printer compatibility, and maybe compatibility with cloud storage services so that you could easily transfer files to a windows computer if you ever need to for some reason. (I sometimes find myself doing work from several different computers throughout the week.)

I'm not really sure what you're asking here.

If it's about smartphone usage and when to upgrade, here's what I've been doing:

I used an android phone that was "a good value for the money". Not all that great, but I was able to load a lot of music and video stuff on it to peruse during my commute. I ended up using it as a general personal computer for things like texting, e-mail, web browsing to find bus plans, etc. That was back when Android only let you run one program at a time. Then I got an update that made me run multiple programs at once, which sucked up all the RAM on the thing and slowly introduced more problems in it. I performed 2 software resets, and opened it up at least twice to fix screwed up stuff, including replacing the screen once. I used that thing until it was practically falling apart.

Now, my new android phone is also a "good value for the money" phone. It might actually be better all around than the last one in terms of specs (though only has one speaker instead of the 2 from last time). I'm using it largely like before; as a calendar app, an e-mail aggregator, personal alarm/timer, texting device, youtube/video machine, ebook reader, weather checker, bank payment maker, music player, and bus schedule checker. This is fine for me, and I don't see much of a need to get any of the phones with huge amounts of processing ability or RAM. Sure, I could run fancy games on it, but I honestly didn't game on my last phone much, so I'd probably never use those functions.

That said, my aunt gifted me an old apple device. It's old enough that I can't even access youtube, nor am I able to update or install the app, since it requires a newer version of the OS. I have no idea what I can use it for.

Yeah, this season seems to have a lot of duds for me. Second seasons of both Overlord and Nanatsu No Taizai took a rather bad turn for the worse pretty quickly imo.

That said, Darling in the Franxx is a breath of fresh air so far. It's kinda hard to pin exactly where it'll go but that's kinda the deal with most Trigger made stuff. Lots of style and a damn well executed idea with some punchy themes behind it. And however cheesy and silly it might get it's pretty earnest about the whole thing which makes it all the more enjoyable.

So if you're into teen drama (but more of the, struggling to find your place in the world, the actually interesting kind of drama) and colorful mecha fighting colorful giant monsters then I'd say it's a pretty safe bet you'll enjoy this one.

I'm not really sure what you're on about. I've been really enjoying the second season of Overlord so far, while Darling in the Franxx seems like a dud that doesn't really grab me. I actually poked into Franxx looking for a generic mecha show, and was put off, so I don't think my expectations for it were too high.

Part of what makes Overlord a well liked story for me is that there is clearly a wider world that exists. The original main character is just one person who's dropped in to a whole new world. One that's quite content to have plenty of things happening in it without any of his involvement. It's not "absurdly overpowered superdude curbstomps everything", it's "the last member of a large guild is transported into a new world and has to figure out what's going on, along with how to live in it". It's about exploration, isolation, the bittersweet reminiscence of lost friendships, and being a small part of a larger setting. There are a ton of characters, each of which have their own story to tell. Many of these stories get pretty much a whole book dedicated to them, and are used to flesh out the world while gradually adding to the larger story of the Main Character's search for answers and anyone he could call peers.

I can't comment on Nanatsu, as I haven't seen it and don't know anything about it.

The early unlocks this month are Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, GOD EATER 2: Rage Burst, and Mafia III + Mafia III: Sign of the Times.

I subscribed to last month because of Dark Souls 3, but I'm not so sure about this month. I've heard that God Eater 2 is a more actiony Monster Hunter with a surprisingly deep bullet crafting system, and I've heard that Mafia 3 is a good story-driven open world game.

Ah, Kabaneri Iron Fortress. I watched that earlier this year after I figured out Amazon actually had a video streaming service.

The first episode is fantastic. The first leg of the series is pretty darn good. Unfortunately, the last half of the series turns to crap.

It's worth watching the first episode, at least. Then the first chunk of the show. But once they introduce the pretty boy with the long pink hair, it loses most of it's charm.

Luckily, the weretortoise ended up tiring itself out while slaughtering my farm of surface animals. I mobbed it with my military after it started passing out from exhaustion.

I think there was only one casualty, an unfortunate dwarf who happened to be on the surface when the beast came. She ended up being one of the dwarves I conscripted. She, along with her baby, died.

Then, a few minutes later in real time, a giant attacked. I played the same strategy of getting all my dwarves underground, massing my military around the underground corner (I had some cace traps this time), and rushing out to attack once it tired itself out.

I'm honestly surprised I still have any living farm animals on the surface at this point. I'll probably have to keep any breeding animals I actually want to keep alive (like dogs, for the military supplement) underground.

Luckily, I've got my overhang floor set up on my surface wall, and my bridge is set up to a lever in the dining room, so I'm well on my way to a functioning fort.

Should I equip my military with iron gear in the meantime, or try to jump straight to steel?

I was getting back into one of my older forts the other day, before I checked and updated to the new version. This was a 43.05 fort I played a couple months ago, I think. I'd had a bit of a break, so I was trying to ease myself back into the game and re-learning how things like mass-pitting works (not very well in this version, apparently).

Suddenly, combat messages were popping up. I checked them, and it seems that there was a pathway open to the caverns, right above my hospital / well setup. I'd built the hospital system partially inside the cavern and surrounded it with floors, walls, and ceilings. The opening was on the roof of the hospital area, where I'd kept my stone stockpile used for construction. Apparently, I'd figured that closing that hole was low priority because there were no ramps leading to that place.

There was a web-shooting forgotten beast with wings.

Oops.

It ended up slaughtering a number of the dwarves who happened to be walking down that central staircase. Luckily, when I noticed it, it seemed like it was being held off by one of the immigrant elf bowmen. He didn't seem to give a damn that he was webbed, since he could still shoot at the forgotten beast. Eventually, said elf was murderized by the beast, but that ended up buying enough time for me to send in my military. The wrong squad. The one with substandard and incomplete equipment because there were goblins, elves, and humans among them. Then I sent in the training squad of marksdwarves, and my main military force.

I was also dealing with a ~70 strong goblin invasion, who had a habit of entering my base in 2s and 4s through an unsecured part of my roof next to a hill that I hadn't been able to recognize.

Eventually, the goblins got bored, about a dozen of them were killed or captured, then they left.

At the end of the session, my fort's dwarf population went from around 136 to closer to 86. One of the casualties, to my dismay, was my Smith, who was responsible for making my weapons and armour. Now I'm stuck with a relatively untrained smith that I'm going to try to train with copper / bronze before I let him touch my steel.

I've also reorganized my military by race. I have a full melee squad with my best gear and a secondary training squad with lesser gear as I gradually arm up. Both made entirely of dwarves. Ditto for a pair of marksdwarf squads. The immigrants with Bow skill get their own squad (might as well use their weapons and all those arrows I seem to keep picking up), and every non-dwarf melee unit is put into a suicide squad with whatever armour and arms they can scrounge up for themselves and will be sent to the front line as much as possible.

I want an easy way to find the "unusable" armour and clothing to designate it for melting. Searching for armour by size doesn't tell me what I can equip my military with, so I'm thinking that mixed military units might be more trouble than they're worth unless I use them as disposable conscripts.

Anyway, the short version is that poking into an old game and stumbling into two problems at once shortly after I got into the game led to a massive population drop and the death of that fort's smith.

I watched it on my computer, to be honest. A quick search for "ghost in the shell stand alone complex streaming" doesn't show any entries for official streaming sites like crunchyroll, netflix, amazon prime video, or anything else.

I got the current versions of DF, Dwarf Therapist, DF Hack, and Picturefort/Quickfort up and running. I'm in year 2-ish, with a population of 64 dwarves, plenty of resources to make steel, and my metalworker became a legendary armoursmith from a mood. All in all, it's a very nice situation. The cavern is a dangerous place, but I've just been accepting all the Monster Slayer applicants who applied, reasoning that they'll keep the cave crocodile and giant olm populations under control.

Unfortunately, I'm still in the process of building the overhanging floor to my surface yard wall, and my military consists of three marksdwarves with leather armour, iron chain mail, and bone helms / greaves. I'm still working on making the low boots and bone gauntlets. Also, they're stuck with wooden bolts still.

I just got a visitor. A weretortoise. It's standing right outside my drawbridge (not hooked up to a lever yet, so it's just a regular bridge), and my squad are moving things in stockpiles or constructing a building. Their xbow skills are 10, 5, and 5.

I don't want to lose them, but I don't want the spreading werebeast infection to burn through my fort.

The game's paused right now, while I go delay the inevitable.

Will wooden bolts be enough to kill the werebeast before they get into melee range? Will it be able to bite through their armour? Will the lack of foot and hand armour be a major oversight? Will the iron chain be really helpful?

The last 2 dwarven civs I played in the new version have only had low boots available. No high boots.

I know that what equipment a civilization can construct is randomized to some degree when a world is generated, but I was wondering if, for some reason, high boots were no longer a thing in new versions of the game.
