I use the default setup and give myself 2 male cats - taking away some dwarf levels.  I dislike vermin eating my food and drink.  I don't like catsplosions, hense the male cats.  Everything else comes with time.

Hobos sounds about right.  They are solo and often grubby/smelly.

If you want bone bolts, check to see if anyone has both bonecrafting and weaponsmithing.  Both are required on one dwarf.

Barons are barons.  Doing nothing is their job.  I don't assign them to anything else, because it doesn't get done anyways.

Also, I think each individual armor rack and weapon rack needs to be it's own room, or the dwarfs won't use it.  Or is this an old version trick?

I'd use the aquafer to make obsidian, mine it around the edges, let it sink, repeat.  I havn't tried it yet.

I'd do danger room. In fact, I'd make it encompass the whole meeting area. Whole thing covered in single training spear repeaters. Just order the lever pulled occasionally.
Pressure plate in the entranceway works nicely for this.  Include 1 non-training spear for medical dwarf training.

8-bit means 8 colors.  16-bit means 16 colors.
I think you ment hi-def.  One can zoom in and out to see more of the tiles so theoretically, you can make the tiles bigger and just zoom out until they are the same size as normal.

Skinny and sharp are not very cute.  I'd beef up the antlers and make them rounded. 
I love the hat on the antlers. 
I agree with the others about the belly button. 
The body needs something...  A small tuft of fur perhaps?

I still have difficulty with the shadows.  Consider switching the places of the hero and the serpent so the hero's shadow has room to interact with the serpent directly. The shadow-shadow conflict doesn't work unless the charactors are beside each other.
