DF General Discussion / Challenge Generator
« on: January 27, 2015, 07:04:37 pm »
I recently overhauled my Challenge Generator for Dwarf Fortress with a bunch of new features (and games). I know how the bay12 forums loves a challenge and would love to see the results of some of the Dorfs over here tackling some challenges.

I posted the link in a separate thread so that it doesn't get buried under posts and so people just glancing in for working tilesets can see there is one available.

Tilesets and Graphics / Using Pheobus 0.34 with DF2014
« on: July 08, 2014, 04:13:16 pm »
*** Now out of date, go to http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=137096.0 for an up to date version of Pheobus ***

So I was impatient to use DF2014 with Pheobus and tried the old version of the tileset out with the new version of Dwarf Fortress.

Initially trees were not working correctly so I fiddled with it a bit and got it working. I've packaged the result up with Pheobus installed and working nicely with trees.

You can download it here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/j7zit70gkikl9ik/DF2014_with_Pheobus.zip

The tileset assembler is included and worked perfectly for me.

The problem was overwriting the new RAWs with the old ones included in Pheobus, also running the init modifier bat broke things as well.

Note: Sand looks a little weird (the solid yellow walls in the first image) and roots and certain branches are displayed using gems. This isn't great but is just how the current tileset works. It still looks much nicer than empty, black space.

All credit goes to Pheobus http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=137096.0 for the tileset. Just wanted to post this in its own thread so it didn't get buried in the Pheobus thread and people checking in can get started right away. I'll label this post as out of date as soon as Pheobus gets a proper update.

How do the new trees look with this tileset, if you use the .34 version of it?

Just came back to mention this.

No textures at all, just black squares.

As you can see in the last post in the image.

Don't include the raws from the pheobus download if you want it to work. Also do not use the init updater, do it yourself manually. Trees are working fine for me now. Not textured, but visible.

I've loaded up .40 with the latest version of Phoebus and it seems to be working almost perfectly. A few things seem odd but for those who cannot play without this tileset it's perfectly usable.

Also, it'd be great if those using it were able to point out problems, it'll probably help things along.

For me the only thing I've seen so far is that it seems like Goblin Settlements use the cloth icon instead of whatever they used to use, so that might've been moved around.

Hope Pheobus is updated for DF2014, really love the artwork in it.

Anyone know if Pheobus will work alright in the new version and just fallback to default textures for things not covered? Or are tilesets not backwards compatible?

If you do read this Pheobus, thanks for all the hard work over the years.

DF General Discussion / Dwarf Fortress command line world gen on osx
« on: October 11, 2012, 07:37:02 am »
So I found the instructions for using the command line options for generating worlds and tried running using it on osx. However whenever I try it it just opens the game as if I'd ran it with no parameters.

I've tried using iTerm as well as the built in terminal. The command I'm using is:

./df -gen 2 RANDOM CUSTOM

Anyone know the problem? I suspect it just might not be supported on osx, the wiki only mentions linux and windows.

DF General Discussion / Re: Am I crazy...

On the whole I've found that no matter what forum you go to the dwarf fortress section is full of great people who are always willing to help. I think it just comes with the fact that these are people who know that asking questions isn't something you rail on someone for and that being mean will drive people away from an amazing game.

This game breeds nice people.

So I just put up two more themes (a bay12 theme and a microcline theme, watch out for the latter)

As well I updated the rating system to use ajax so it no longer refreshes the page when you rate something.

Opinions on the new themes?

Picked the book up today at a conference and it's really good, I quite like how for some sections he held off on information. Specifically the strange moods section where he held off on explaining exactly what things dwarves say mean. Only problem is secretive moods where you need an explanation glass and burning wood is not ever going to lead you to crystal glass. Plus the problem where for most moods all cloths say the same thing. These exceptions certainly needed a mention at least.

Anyway, the book is great and explains the complex sections like the military really well. I've thrown a review and suggestion up on my site, because anyone who wants to learn has to get this book.

The only downside I really find with it is that to get the e-book with the physical you've got to pay a small upgrade fee, for a book like this that is going to be out of date, potentially even with completely wrong information, it seems like an updating e-book should come free with the physical.

So, I just updated  to have multiple themes that you can select from.
Three so far:
  • Stone being the current main one, built this morning;
  • Soil, the old one that people seemed to dislike;
  • And elven, which is a wooden background and what is supposed to be a parchmenty story background but apparently just appears white on my friends monitor.

I've got two more planned to create tomorrow which are microcline and a world map theme (similar to bay12games) which someone suggested yesterday.
Also maybe a magma theme.

13
So I completely changed the theme of the site now. I'll be adding a theme selector at some point today with the old theme as well as an elven theme.

14
How about now then? I've completely changed the design.

I will be implementing a theme chooser soon with the old theme, this theme and a wooden elf theme. (And maybe a microcline theme for people who hate their eyes.)

15
What do you think of the font colour now?
It isn't white, because I hate the white on dark background thing toady uses for his blog and I'm trying to avoid the effect that that gives.
