Got distracted by some work. Tomorrow I'll power through what's left of the year (I'm not too far in)

as far as "bumping if no one else shows up", sure.

Well... I can tell that bad things have happened here.

From the reports, it looks like a merchant caravan came in and killed the cyclops.

It's interesting to look at the corpses on the floor after the fire. People obviously tried to run away, but the ones who got out of the fire were bleeding, so as they tried to climb back up the stairs, they bled to death. Now the stairwell near the caves is covered in blood.

12 have died so far.

We have a total of 8 giant lions (2 adults).
We also have a tamed fire mephit named "Kol Kalurlikot". It's covered in the blood of two different dwarves - one of whom was burned in the fire. COINCIDENCE?! I THINK NOT!
And... a pet raptor?

Right. A wingless, feathered raptor. Cool!

Uhh there's no wood in our wood stockpile, and we appear to be iced in. The entrance to the underworld just has a few cage traps guarding it, so I'm gonna build a drawbridge. I'm also gonna figure out some way to get rid of all this miasma. Coffins seem too nice, so I'll see about making a "burial" pit somewhere. Maybe with spikes on the bottom too, just to make sure no one escapes should they try to. We also need to start training up a military. Right now the military consists of our broker and the commander.

(Just confirming that I'm still following this xD)

I think what diamondmine meant was that if you don't at least check back by saying "Yeah, I'm playing the turn" within 24 hours then you're skipped, not that you have to finish the whole year in 24 hours. That's how I took it at least. I'll do a (HAX1!!) scan of the area to see definitively if there is any ore.

no Iron.

DF General Discussion / Re: What code does Toady use to write DF?

Also, in C++ there's a LOT of stuff to take into account. The main difference between C and C++ (and what makes C++ better suited for large projects) is Object Oriented Programming. That means stuff like inheritance/polymorphism, and virtual/pure virtual member variables, and friend classes, and protected members, and overloading operators, etc. It's really hard when starting out to understand everything, and a lot of the errors you'll have will be due to misunderstanding the syntax. I couldn't really get Object Oriented Programming through my head until I took a class on Java, so if you have a computer science course you can sign up for, DO IT because it will help you in all other programming languages.

C++ plus visual studio. Also:

So... mostly it's just C++ and SDL. Looking at GPU usage, it seems he also uses the OpenGL components of SDL for sped up rendering.

On the long term, I'd recommend learning OpenGL from http://lazyfoo.net/, and then OpenGL from http://www.arcsynthesis.org/gltut/
(NOT NeHe, which is what the lazyfoo site recommends. Fixed function pipeline=not great, although that might be considered personal opinion [and the opinion of a lot of people])

Of course, if you're unfamiliar with C++, that would be damn hard. In the short term, I'd recommend DarkGDK: http://www.thegamecreators.com/
http://forum.thegamecreators.com/?m=forum_read&i=22
It's not the best, but it's easy to use, and most of the time it gets the job done.

Also, I highly suggest getting 19 soldiers to follow you and sleeping in the plains. You won't regret it, I promise. large ambush = army arc.
wait, so is this a bad idea? That's sarcasm right?

because whenever I have a lot of people following me I always get pwnt by ambushes :(

Ah, dang.

Thanks for the links. I'll try to make some progress figuring out the save files.

Ahh... I don't know how I missed a wikipedia article on it.

...probably 'cuz I used "ascii" as a keyword in all the searches...

DF Modding / Editing/parsing binary .dat and .sav files?
« on: April 21, 2011, 03:22:14 am »
(this refers to data in your "dwarf_fortress/data/save/regionN/" folder)
It seems like the bulk of the Dwarf Fortress world info is in the .dat and .sav files. However, I see no documentation on the formatting of these files!!!

I'm a pretty experienced hobbyist coder, so I'm down with binary lingo... I'm just bad at poking around in the dark.

Soooo where can i find some documentation on the dwarf fortress save files? Obviously a couple people know a lot about it, because there are 3d viewers for dwarf fortress.

Curses / What does "curses" mean?
« on: April 21, 2011, 03:13:01 am »
I just joined the forums today... but... the title of this forum caught my eye.
I have a wireless network manager called "wicd", and the command line version of this program is called "wicd-curses". I've also dealt with a python package, "curses.ascii", and NOW there's a subforum about ASCII based games called "curses"?!

WTH is going on? What does curses mean in relation to text?

("curses my eyes are bleeding"?) :P
