My incredibly expensive, experimental, beyond-top-secret jet was being given a test flight by a rookie pilot. I forgot to pack an ejection seat, airbrakes, parachutes... anything, really, that would have helped her stop. Except, you know, the ground.

Started a normal abduction mission (with Long War, might I add. This is, approximately, my 5 millionth abduction mission.) in a.. really shitty position. Seriously? Behind this building with no cover except the building itself? Thanks, Skyranger pilot.
Anywho, I send my sniper up to the observatory area to get him a good Squadsight spot, and put two or so men in the downstairs room of said observatory, when all of the sudden a Cyberdisk appears! My first. I was not glad.
My soldiers and the 'Disk exchange fire after it literally oneshots our SHIV, and then a few Thin Men decide to show up. All's rather well and good, considering, even when my medic tanks two (ONLY TWO??) damage from the 'Disk's grenade... but another 'Disk shows up. Its Drone buddies zap my scout, whom is then shot by the Thin Men, another Thin Man oneshots my infantry unit, my sniper's actually in a super shitty spot... I restarted.
XCOM - Enemy Within

That sounds rather like my first rounds against Cyberdisks in Long War.

Yeeeaaaah, Long War will seriously kick your ass. I've actually restarted a mission several times just so it generates with me in a spot where I can actually get cover in the first turn, since otherwise by the end of the second turn my team's dying and the aliens are breaking out the anal probes.

Cassowaries aren't predators though?

No, but they will fuck your shit right up. Imagine a Glaswegian ostrich dressed for a Mardi gras parade.

Wait. Am I in the WTF thread? Oh, wait, no, they're discussing Argentinian spikes of lutefisk laced with drugs in cocktails...

Hmm.

I got beaten into a pulp by a bunch of freaky frogmen. They really don't like me for some reason.

It's also an exceedingly bad idea to not be nice to cats. (See also: the Duchess, the Tiger Keeper, or tigers, lots of tigers. Dear god.)
Isn't there a deity in Lovecraft's works that will murder you dead if you abuse cats?
You mean Lovecraft himself wouldn't personally hunt you through space and time?

According to Atomic Robo, that's perfectly plausible. Lovecraft is himself a Lovecraftian horror that wants to consume the universe from its point of observation that lies outside of time.

Lies!
I'll love you right in the spleen m8.

Pretty sure that's not what spleens are for. Like, 80% sure.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What's going on in your fort?

Does this only work in .34? Because I just tried it in 40.24, nothing happened.
Try it with other entity tags like PLAINS or FOREST

It took me a moment to remember that those tags refer to humans and elves. I was busy imagining a dwarf glancing outside and crying in horror as giant slabs of savannah dirt dramatically advance on the fortress.

I accidentally wandered into an evil zone... Apparently I was playing as a Japanese schoolgirl, since I was immediately surrounded by half a dozen giant spiky tentacles.

Victor and Victoria. The game's been hyping up this confrontation for hours now and my first clash or two with them ended dismally - so I trained the hell out of my alchemist, backed up on plenty of special moves and let the freaky little witch have it.

It was extremely satisfying to plough them into the ground. Goddamn Victoria is creepy as hell.

Larix, you are truly amazing. This guide is awesome!

Basically I'm mostly convinced that you're the Dwarven God of Mechanics.
Yes I'm a huge fan of your work.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: quick room assignment in next version?
« on: June 20, 2015, 10:17:11 pm »
I too never specifically assign rooms, except for Nobility.  Dwarves will claim a room on their own, eventually.  On this subject, I feel inclined to mention a fabulous little tool called QuickFort.  It allows you dig, furnish, and designate a whole floor of bedrooms in less than a minute.

I never use it, though... I don't see why I'd ever want to use the same design more than once.  That seems counter to the whole point of playing to me to not bother with the actual design...
Who said anything about using the same design?  I have 3-4 blueprints for various dormitories and dining halls, depending on my needs.

Yeah, it's great for mass-designation of cubicles. And if you find a design you like, you save it for later use! Especially useful if you have something replicated across floors, like a tower layout or something.

Some kinda giant demon-hog decided he didn't like the way I was sedately wandering around harvesting grass, so he headbutted me into oblivion.

I just watched Kingsman!

Man, that movie was sweet. I certainly wasn't expecting James Bond as imagined by Quentin Tarantino, but still.
