@Meph Don't worry i figured it out. I wasn't in an evil region but i managed to get out by digging an escape tunnel to other side of the map and set up a few dozen cage traps, and a few months later i got the necromancer! Now i just have to figure out what to do with him.

Quick question guys. I'm not 100% sure this is a masterworks problem i'm having but it's so hard to find info and i never had this problem in another fort so here goes. Horse wool keeps resurecting and my dwarves are trapped in their own fort. At first it was funny because i imagined a ball of hair rolling around but after a few months of it its getting really old really fast. About 7 at a time horse wools are terrorizing the entrance to my fort. Right now my military is chopping them up but as soon as one dies, another two takes its place. They are completely harmless and have actually been giving my soldiers pretty good training so i guess theres a bright side to this. I heard the problem may be a necromancer hiding somewhere and that i should set up random cage traps until i catch him. I would do this but no dwarves can get out of the fort because they keep getting scared of the wool right away and the constant announcements about it is getting on my nerves. I also randomly looked at reports once and one of them said a dwarven baby was looking at the refuse stockpile twice... If this little baby is the necromancer, what's the best way to have an unfortunate accident happen? Thanks!

DF Gameplay Questions / Hospital is hogging all the buckets!
« on: June 10, 2012, 01:14:04 am »
i just set up my hospital, it has everything it needs to function, especially buckets. the problem is, the hospital is hogging all the buckets. whenever i make a bucket, it goes right into the hospital and cannot be used for anything else. i checked the hospitals stocks and it has 10/5 buckets. is there anyway to get the buckets out of the hospital?

do you have tentacle arms yet? they could be like arms where they are 2 or 4 and can end in claws or just tentacle which would be the same as hand.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: magma forges
« on: June 19, 2011, 12:17:39 am »
from what i read, it sounds most effective to just build my forges down there. im digging down and being patient with the caves and its working so far so thats good, ive never scene what the seas look like so hopefuly i can handle them. i know magma is dangerous but when my dwarves are digging, is there a chance they might fall in since they are digging out the floor on the way down? thanks everyone so far!

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / magma forges
« on: June 18, 2011, 11:14:07 pm »
im a bit confused on how to set these up. i never dug down to the magma seas because on my way down i run into so many annoying caves that i just get frustrated and quit before i can get down there. i also heard to set up magma pumps but they sound so expensive to make and im still not sure how to set those up. whats the best way to get these running because i have no fuel on my map besides wood and i dont want to burn it all up. thanks for the help!

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: the outside of my fort is messy

1: Bodyparts are refuse, enable refuse hauling outdoors, and your dwarves will dump them in appropriate stockpiles.  I modded my ethics to butcher sentient remains, so I get a lot of Dark Stranger Wrestler Bone[17] and such.  This is useful because food items and bones degrade faster than corpses, clearing up stockpiles quickly.

2: DFHack has the DFCleanMap feature, which removes all contaminants from the ground.  Or wait for rain, assuming you have weather turned on.  Alternatively, build and remove anything, like floors or cabinets or weapon racks, then deconstruct them.

3: The first sieges in FD are weak.  Stranglers (and apparently beak dogs, I didn't update to that version yet) are extremely weak, and I often have leather-clad soldiers sawing through them with copper axes.  They're very useful to train your soldiers.  Consider using a danger room though, FD gets intense when you get 5 sieges of 4 squads of 10 (200+ easily) and half of them can take down the average dwarf.

this might seem a little off topic but i did manage to catch about 8 stranglers in cage traps. i saved right after the battle and havent played yet so they are still freshly caught. im not sure what to do with them though, should i just execute them or is there a way to have my dwarfs spar with them? thanks for the suggestions!

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Beards

idk how to mod, but if its possible imagine if a dwarf got knocked out by an enemy, the beard crawls off and starts defending the helpless dwarf.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / the outside of my fort is messy
« on: June 18, 2011, 12:32:48 am »
i just installed fortress defense mod and about a year in i had 3 sieges at once and somehow my 10 dwarves killed 40+ enemies and only 6 of them died. anyway, after the battle was over my forts courtyard, gate, and a big area around my fort (thanks to me not defending my big pastures) is just covered in blood and various torn body parts and corpes. as cool as it was at first when i was still pumped from the battle, its a bit of an eyesore now. is there anyway to get my beautiful green grassfields back?

i kind of just killed an elven caravan and go A LOT of wood and cloth which is really helpful right now. but now im afraid they arent going to come back. idc if they attack me since im ready for them, but does this mean no more elven caravans? im kind of new and didnt really think this one out...  reading the reports though was very interesting but brutal, definatly shows off how in depth dwarf fortress is.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / military help?
« on: June 13, 2011, 12:21:32 am »
i thought i had the military figured out so far in DF but i was wrong after experiencing my first goblin siege just now. from what i know, you make a burrow at the front of you fort, and make some squads in the military. in a fortress with 85 dwarfs, i had 4 squads of 5. i had a custom alert called defense where and selected the entrance burrow for it. once the siege started, i selected defense alert which put  CIV next to it, and also assigned all my squads to it. after that, every dwarf in my fortress rushed there and although militarily i only suffered 5 losses, there where many more civilian losses then i had hoped. how come every dwarf ran to the front, and how do i make them stay deep inside where its safe?

and also just in general, whats some good military advice? after 2 migrant waves a started a small squad and had them train in the barracks i made for them and they kept doing this the entire game. they where armed with various steel weapons like short swords, axes, and spears and some steel armor. i tried making some crossbow dwarfs but even when i had an archery room with left to right which was correct, they never trained there. i also barely use traps, so i guess i should make more. are weapon traps better then cage traps?

sorry if this sounds too demanding, but this attack caused serious damage and im not too sure how to handle enemies. thanks everyone who helps!

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / when do goblins start attacking?
« on: June 11, 2011, 11:27:21 pm »
its been about a year and a half at my fortress and ive had 7 migrant waves and im at 50ish dwarfs. i have my military ready to do some battle but i havent had a single goblin or anything really dangerous come yet. i settled in the untamed wilds and i just started playing a week ago and havent had any threats yet. am i expecting them to come to soon? whats the average time for goblins to start invading.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: How did you learn to play DF
« on: June 07, 2011, 10:21:32 pm »
almost completely from captnduck, his videos are SO helpful for beginers. the hardest part is being able to imagine you world and how it looks, once i had that down i took things one step at at time with food, crafting, forging, and military. i just started last friday and i already have the basics and some intermediate stuff down. i can get a consistent food suply and wood/rock supply to craft with. ive also started doing basic forging with copper/iron and getting small military squads to train. ive only traded once so far but i think it was pretty successful. ive yet to encounter any true wars yet with anybody though.
