So the implication is that you can always dig down far enough to hit magma. Is there a point, far enough down, that you would find nothing but endless magma, like reaching the planet's mantle?
Almost certainly not. Fundamental assumptions of the game's engine would have to change, and there's little benefit there.
Indeed, such an area would cause an instant cave-in.

Nah, there are still unmineable rock squares on the sides of the map that would hold up the rest of the world.

Although I'm assuming that those can't collapse haha.

DF General Discussion / Re: Yellowstone Supervolcano

We geologists have never said that we're due or overdue; we have only mentioned when the last eruptions have occurred.  It wouldn't kill 80% of all life on the planet directly.  It'll cover the US east of the volcano in ash.  The ash in the atmosphere may affect global temperatures for years which in turn affects crop viability.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: How does one get besieged?
« on: June 18, 2009, 11:12:48 am »
I believe it's a combination of wealth and population.  It is unlikely that a fortress of 10 dwarves will be sieged.  Wealth probably determines the size of the ambushes/sieges while the population determines whether you get thieves, ambushes, or sieges.

However, that's just speculation from my games.  Raising your pop cap and bringing in some migrants would probably fix you right up.

DF Suggestions / Storage Pit (Z level goods transfer)
« on: June 18, 2009, 10:21:47 am »
I would like to see a special stockpile which you designate over a pit/channel/hole.

For example, you have a shaft from the ground surface down 5 z levels.  The surface is designated as a wood pit.  Wood cutters chop wood and toss it down the hole.  At the bottom of the shaft could be a wood stockpile.

With a lot of micromanagement, this can be done by dumping and claiming items.  Even so, garbage dumps are not item specific.

DF Bug Reports / 40d11 Named Wild Animals

There is a named Giant Bat who became so after killing a bunch of merchants.  Anyway, the bugger managed to fly into my meeting hall.  No one attacks it.  This includes tame animals (including my dogs), my military (they are set to harass dangerous animals).  The Giant Bat just has free reign to slaughter everyone.  It is just picking them off one by one.

Why not have the sea flow into an aquifer?

I haven't seen humans or elves yet and it's my third year into my fortress.  I must have picked a place without human or elf contact.  Is there a way to check now that I've already started my fortress?

do you need to irrigate in the new version?</STRONG>

It depends.  You can farm outside with certain crops.  You don't have to irrigate sand, loam, or clay if you dig farm areas into that.  Otherwise, you have to irrigate rock.

DarkAvenger, are you using the latest version which was released Nov 1?  If you have the one which was released prior to Oct 30, then you cannot build up or down among many other new features.  Download the latest version on the main page if that's the case.

Putting a cat or kitten in a cage near your entrances works for unveiling the thief as well.  It just won't attack it.  They tend to run away when you spot them anyway.

You're right.  It was only ten.  HOWEVER, for some reason when I have only 10 available, they will not cook them.  I have to have over 10 quarry bush leaves before they take 10 to cook.  I guess that was my original problem.

Okay, I figured it out.

You need at least 15 Quarry Bush Leaves to make a meal out of only Quarry Bush Leaves.  Seems like a weird number, I know.

As for "Mix Food/Don't Mix Food," I think that refers to barrels in stockpiles.  So if you have a food stockpile, a single barrel can hold all types of food rather than a single barrel being reserved for only one type of food.

DF Gameplay Questions / Cooking Quarry Bush Leaves
« on: July 31, 2007, 01:34:00 pm »
Hello!

I managed to find, grow, and process to a bag my first batch of quarry bushes.  I had never bothered to gather plants indoors or was curious enough to try to find quarry bushes.  Now that I have stacks of quarry bush leaves, I want to try to cook them.

I have the leaves as the only thing available for cooking on the kitchen screen.  When I want to prepare a meal of any quality, a cook brings one leave to the kitchen, then I get an announcement saying that there need to be 2 unrotten cookable items.  Then the cook drops the leaves and the action is canceled and removed from the kitchen.

Can I not cook two quarry bush leaves to create a meal?  Do I have to mix them with other foods?  Or am is my fortress just bugged?

Thanks
