DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Is a full-time military possible?
« on: July 27, 2012, 05:38:08 pm »
I always found my dwarves got upset when I took them off duty! They'd cry about long periods of duty, then when I gave them a break (still soldiers very much in training) they're moan about being taken off duty. So every fortress I've done for the last year or two has featured large never breaking military, and I've never had them kick off in a tantrum either. In fact, I've placed a very poorly made wooden armour stand outside, totally open to the elements, set it as the barracks and had them spar away for years. Sometimes I'll have them slaughter the wildlife, which they enjoy, and they're always on hand to deal with any goblins or thieves.

I enjoyed the plan in theory, until I got to the line about putting them in the danger room. That seemed to take away from it quite a lot.

On previous versions I've had both a legendary armourer, and fisherdwarf arrive.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Adamantine crossbows?
« on: March 13, 2012, 08:39:54 am »
As I understand it, in terms of shooting, crossbows work purely on the quality of the bow. A masterwork bone crossbow will be just as powerful as a masterwork adamantine crossbow. The difference in material comes when the crossbows are used to bash enemies at close range, and as you're probably aware adamantine sucks as a material for bashing things.

I found it interesting you didn't seem to have any containers in either the apartments, or the hospital. Impressive fort though. Even more impressive FPS rate still remaining..

One of the by far most effective methods is setting the g_fps in the init file to 15 or lower.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: DF 2012v0.34 question and answer thread
« on: March 06, 2012, 06:49:00 pm »
I obtained a tame Giant Eagle from the elves, and released it from its cage. When I try to use the "Train war dog" command it tells me there's nothing that can be trained. What am I doing wrong?

Edit - on re-examining the Wiki entry there seems to be a conflict of information. The attributes state they can not be trained, but the article rambles at length about how they can.

As a note for training "weapon dwarves", it's best to have ones without weapon skills equipped but placed in an off duty squad (with a barracks assigned for them to train at). They'll perform individual training, which is the best way for them to gain level 1 in whichever weapon skill (without using exploits). Once they've gotten this they'll train a lot faster within active squads, and so far as I can tell be more likely spar.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Producing Pig Iron
« on: September 22, 2011, 11:27:28 am »
Thanks for the detailed response Xen0n, but not realising I need to throw some fuel in too seems to be my issue here. My current embark doesn't have any sources of coke, so I went straight for the magma hoping this would solve things. Guess I'll need to get some under ground forests up and running... I feel like such an elf.

Thank you both.

DF Gameplay Questions / Producing Pig Iron
« on: September 22, 2011, 09:45:04 am »
I have a large stack of iron bars, and a large stack of marble. The option to produce pig iron bars isn't available at my magma smelters. Why is this?

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Adamantine Scimitar in random place
« on: July 22, 2011, 11:43:02 am »
Lots of zombies and such to fight when you get there, your FPS may take quite a hit. If you can battle through them though that scimitar is your just reward and ripe for the taking.

I haven't had any truly remarkable dreams, but my girlfriend has caught me muttering about dwarves in my sleep multiple times. Apparently once I got out an entire sentence. I'm not a chronic sleep talker.

I've had spear dwarves single handedly take out FBs (not made of liquids) with copper spears, so this provides evidence for their being "boss".

That's precisely what I said.

Your migrant dwarves use an underground train network to get to you.

I'm going to assume that depends on what the floodgate is made out of.
