DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Clayest thing since Clay came to Claytown
« on: September 07, 2011, 06:01:57 am »
Glassmaking requires a fuel source, so is a big problem if you do not have bituminous coal/lignite or a magma source. Clay is annoying since the most useful things to make are pots, and you'd have to take the extra step in Glazing them.

Fire clay is both pretty valuable and doesn't require glazing at all, in fact an economy based around a single fire clay tile can produce all the wealth you will ever need in my experience.

Do you mean to make modding easier? 'cause virtually all the above can be done already by changing raws with the exception of a "split-able" creature ala Snaketail suggestion which i think is an excellent idea btw.

You can indeed get them back press k then select the bolts ( individually sadly ) then press f to claim, also use the o orders menu to automatically claim back your used ammunition though be aware that civilian dwarfs may charge out whilst your under siege to grab them without burrows being set-up  ;)

DF Suggestions / Re: New Modding Tag Ideas!

[BUILDING_DESTROYER_3] or [LEVIATHAN] tags that allow certain creatures to be able to destroy b+c constructions but implemented in such a way that they won't methodically deconstruct a 200+ block outside wall but rather will destroy anything in the way of its path-finding to prey i.e. dwarfs would be great!

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: preventing maisma in my arena
« on: September 06, 2011, 12:19:51 am »
Make the arena floor accessable to your dwarfs so they can mop up after each big siege is the easiest but some kind of magma/water flood and drain system is probally more fun and can kill any survivors!

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Exploring early layers

If you embark on more than one biome one z-level may have both a soil layer and rock layer as well, dfreveal from dfhack is a really useful cheaty way to plan out your fort from the moment you stop the wagon...

Hi i am interested in creating graphics for custom created creatures, is there a how-to guide on how to do this floating about anywhere? A search of this forum  for " creating graphics " failed to yield an answer sadly and the wiki appears bare  :(

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Assist in learning please

Quick scan through shows me most of the mistakes I've been making. I don't focus on individual efforts at the start well enough, and everyone ends up tied up doing something else. This should help streamline the start and make me less dead come the start of the second year.

Take away all the hauling labours for your miner/s so you can dig a fortress out pretty quickly and plop a door or two at your entrance for super quick basic security, If you make as many stone crafts as possible before the first caravan comes and sell them all to the trader your first wave of real migrants should be pretty big. More dwarfs will let you get industry up and running and a militia ready for ambush/scary wildlife suppresion! Good luck  :)

You can set the population limit so you never get over a unmanageable amount of dwarves in the init files, or get the Lazy newb pack to do it for you. Far easier to take your time then, killing off migrants will give you ghost troubles!

Looks like Fortress Defense Mod, Its a pretty nifty addition, My first real fort just got crushed by a Frogman siege and White Tigerman siege whilst being sneak attacked by Kobold Ambushers pretty hectic!

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Standard Worldgen Cavern Design Question!
« on: August 06, 2011, 06:28:39 am »
Huzzah!  :D I was trying to place too many peaks according to the error log ( I thought peaks meant total number high elevation area's not really tall mountains * Blushes * ) and i was also hitting ' p ' and then exiting meaning i was telling the game to try to create a blank canvas world with my other parameters...

Thanks for the advice everyone time to strike the earth!

What settings did you use?

I copied the large Island set and just changed Cavern openness and Density to Min - 100 and Max - 100 ( Is this too much? )

Here's a good read for you.

http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/DF2010:World_rejection

It outlines common rejection causes and explains how to read the rejection log to take some of the guesswork out.

Yeah using the wiki has been a godsend for military, setting up indusrty etc. but i am struggling with this, apparently the world needed more 400 elevation but i didn't change that so * Shrugs shoulders *

Additionally, make sure you enable the map rejection logging in the init file.

I am using LNP so don't know the best way of altering the init how do i enable map rejection logging?
