DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Re: No one ever hostile?
« on: January 18, 2015, 08:00:30 pm »
The bandits are at a camp though, with loot and the bandit icon and everything. And finding them comes from the "We've got bandits" line of questioning, so I dunno. While getting away with murder should certainly be possible, it definitely feels broken that even a lord's personal guard will just sit there while you hack him to bits.

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / No one ever hostile?
« on: January 18, 2015, 11:04:38 am »
So is adventure mode completely broken right now, or am I doing something wrong? I have the latest release, and so far no matter what I do no one is ever hostile. Peasants watching their friends getting murdered will simply comment on how horrible these violent acts are. The guards in a castle will sit idly while their rulers get murdered. Hell, even bandits are friendly, both before AND after their (also friendly) captain gets slaughtered.

Do I have to mod the raws somehow? I'm playing a human adventurer. I have not yet found a single humanoid who defaulted to hostile in several hours of adventuring. Even more, I can't find a way to gain renown, so it's more or less impossible to get more than two or three people in the party, which means I can't tackle any of the large monster hunts or I get more or less rekt. So, basically, unless someone has a fix for this adventure mode is unplayable for me at the moment.

Well I managed to figure out that it's because now forts appear to be integrated into towns rather than in the wilderness. My adventurers can get outfitted now. I also found some bandit camps filled with goblins, but all the goblins there were friendly to my (human) adventurer, making them easy pickings. In addition, despite killing the captain I can still only get two followers.

I'm guessing this is just an overall issue with the release? I haven't modded any files outside of init and d_init

Also, new question: When opponents move into me via dodging or something in combat, I automatically go to ground without any chance for input. If this happens while I'm being attacked it can lead to my death more often than not, since I then have to scramble out of the occupied tile (as I can't stand up with someone there), which procs about four hits from the attacker en route, and then after that I have to spend a few ticks actually standing if I'm not dead or crippled. Is this some preference I need to change or is it automatic (which would be terrible)?

So I've been gone from Adventure mode and DF in general since a little after the huge update (40.01 I think). Whatever added minecarts and wheelbarrows.

I'm trying to start up a new set of adventures. However, I have a number of problems:

-There seem to be no forts. If I get spawned with a silver short sword I'm more or less boned, now. Not only can I not improve my weapon, it also seems more or less impossible to find armor either.
-In relation to the above note, all catacombs appear to be completely barren now. Every time I check under a castle there's nothing but endless blank halls. No enemies to loot or fight, no gear on the ground to pick up.
-There seems to be nothing quest-wise except quests to kill titans, colossi, and rocs. Naturally, a freshly minted Hero with clothing and a crappy sword can't very well take on a ten story tall bronze behemoth without quickly becoming a freshly minted red splotch on the ground. I hear peasants talking amongst themselves about bandit camps, but every time I try to ask them about troubles I get a "Well... we've got beasts" quest. How am I supposed to find bandit camps to help train up my character and earn him renown?
-On that subject, every time I get a quest they tell me to "find this person, they are well traveled." but give me no indication of where I should actually go past a vague city name.
-Finally, even the times when I've given up and tried to die in a glorious rampage I haven't been able to because the AI seems to be completely borked. I can systematically murder every peasant in a house, with the rest of them calmly standing around talking about "such violence" and "the horrors of death surround us. I must remain strong." until I turn on them, at which point they finally individually fight back. I mean, I'm not saying this is necessarily less realistic than every single peasant in the village leaping on you in a murderous carving-knife-wielding mob, but at least a few ganging up or running away is what should happen, no?

So, the gist of my post is, is there any way to set up world gen so it spawns forts and if not, how the hell do I get gear? Also how to I find bandit camps/get quests to bandit camps/find the person who tells me how to get to bandit camps. Finally, why won't the peasants just kill me in a glorious bloodbath instead of letting me strike them down one by one?

In a game like Dwarf Fortress, going to the wiki being cheating for the game is like saying bringing a parachute is cheating for skydiving.

what's the fastest way to disable bogeymen? I dunno if there's an option somewhere that I'm missing, but I'm tired of my legendary adventurers dying because on of the little buggers chipped an ankle bone and the wimp instantly passed out from pain.

My problem with archers is that even if I sit like 5 tiles away, I will miss about 10 shots for every one I actually do anything with, and then even that's blocked most of the time. Am I just extremely unlucky?

Edit: RIP peasant crossbowman. You were doing great until you missed 50 bolts in a row on that one prone guy (does prone reduce chance of hitting with range?) Then you got stabbed in the face when you tried to beat him down, despite three of his limbs being broken. You will not be missed.

Yes, it is harder to hit a prone guy. Maybe not even possible? A couple of versions ago, it was indeed impossible to hit them at all. You could hit them til it fell down, then you had to go in for the kill in close combat.

I like being a hunter. as in literally being a hunter, going out hunting animals, butcher them, sell the meat, buy arrows for the money I earn. Good way to start the game if you are in the mood for some RPG.. which you probably are, not much point starting as a peasant otherwise.

I like the idea of peasant just because I feel like I can actually feel proud of what I accomplish as a peasant. All it is is a different tagline in a legends screen I'll never check, but I like it nonetheless. It feels a lot more badass to think I'm just some random commoner who picked up his sword one day and decided to fight evil - of course, it goes to show how successful most RPG protagonists would actually be. That is, not very.

For surviving nights in the wilderness, you can make campfires all around yourself as a barrier to everything that doesn't fly or have arrows. Including yourself, but it's good enough for keeping bogeymen away even though you do have to wait f OREVER until they go away and they'll still interrupt your sleep. But they won't kill you, and that's good. Probably.

Also, mountains and beaches are safe from bogeymen, so plan your trip accordingly. I enjoy playing peasants, but don't like to grind, and rather level my skills more realistically. (that means only very few of my peasants ever become good at anything. I have however gotten proficient at having them survive for long periods of time). I usually try to avoid wearing armor that slows me down too much, peasants don't stand much of a chance in battle anyhow, so often it is best to run and rely on speed.

I don't use armor either really. My skill setup is usually: Novice [Weapon], Novice Swimmer, Competent Dodger, Novice Reader (just in case). I tend to run to a fortress and just grab a whatever mail and helm are the best.
It's rather annoying that I never even get to do anything kind of cool. I just end up sitting there in stealth throwing rocks at dudes until I get spotted, then they typically hack a limb or cut a tendon and boom. Dead.

No companions means I get ambushed by bogeymen every night until I complete a quest.
Min-maxing as much as I can with stats leaves me with +10/+5/+5 which is hardly impressive.
I go get gear from forts whenever I make a new character.
I take the majority of what meager scraps qualify as skill points in dodge for more survivability.
Yet still I die on the first quest every single time I play a peasant. Without fail. Once found full iron gear and got slammed by the first actual fighter I came across. Once I actually finished a quest and was coming home to report when I was ambushed and turned into a pincushion by about 5 archers. One time I was about to kill a peasant "night creature" after us missing eachother/him bouncing punches off my armor when he tackled me into a pool of water and I drowned because my novice swimming couldn't save me from the fall-stun.

TL;DR what are the best tips for surviving the first days as a peasant without grinding up throwing or something silly. Stat distribution and skill suggestions? I'm not a newbie, I just haven't played for awhile.

Since my "peasant" is breaching the circus tent with his blue sword I say yes, peasants are possible, you just have to be careful

stat distribution,2 points into agilty, that's all you can use,but the thing is,how far do you consider cheating?
As I said, I min/max, so I take 10 points out from useless stats and get an extra point in strength and toughness (though I have no clue if endurance is better, not sure which does what).
I'm more interested in how I should do skills.

Not particularly funny, per se. But I found a sewer that has the most fucking metal name I've ever seen in this game.

It takes a couple of days for the curse to change your body.

I was already immune to hunger, thirst, exhaustion and breathing.

And I'd been a vampire for over a week in-game.

15
Spent about two hours on an adventurer. Had gotten to the point where I had almost full iron armor, including an *iron helm*. Accomplished Dodger, Talented Shield User, Master Axeman. Superhuman agility.

I was assaulting a bandit camp and felt I was strong enough to do so without stealth. I was wrong. Here's the very first message I got:

The flying -copper arrow- strikes you in the head, tearing the muscle and tearing apart the upper spine's nervous tissue through the *iron helm*!

Suffocated before I even saw the bastard that killed me. Pathetic AND ridiculous.
