That isn't as hard as you might think, especially if you back out and save often, and kill the proccess whenever your adventurer dies, saving you much time.

FYI you will most likely die a very slow FPS death in any kind computer, even on a super quantum computer.

A quantum computer would have no lag as it would already know where everything is stored, so you wouldn't actually need any ram essentially if I understand it right.

So he's still working on the update, darn. I don't have internet at home so this is a bit of a bummer. Downloaded the old version and it didn't work.

Also original poster, turning your population cap lower will help as well with fps. You can do that by altering the number in one of the init files, just a part that says "pop cap" and has a number below it basically.

i run DF on a single core 2.4 gig hertz and 2 gig ram laptop... i paid $350 (or $250? I forget) for this piece of junk a year and a half ago and I can run DF with an fps of 80ish until it slugs down to 20-40 after a few years. then i just drop stuff in lava, let it burn, then go and turn off the temperature in the initi file until i want to play with lava again. then my fps jumps right back up to 90-100.

Oh, and i use a 2x2 embark space. using a 4x4 just kills my computer, but my recent 4x2 seems to be doing just fine fps wise.

Guys, I'm a bit of a lurker here, but I got to say, reclaiming IS worth it if it's not too bad. if it is, go in adventure mode with 20 followers or so and clear it out. the cleaning up is bad, sure, and it may not be worth it if the fort is too big. but if you lost it in the first 2-3 years, which happens a lot to me, then reclaiming it could actually work. Three of my best forts ever were reclaims of forts that died out right before they were about to really take off.

I recall one fort I had that was re-embarked not once, BUT TWICE. Eventually it was overrun by two or three forgotten beasts, and it killed a ton of adventureres and dwarf military teams before they were eventually slain. Every once in a while I'd go for it, but it felt like it added to the lore. Once I visited it 20 years later after it's last abandon, and by golly, I wouldn't reclaim it then it was so run-down, but that doesn't mean I wouldn't do so otherwise.

Also use advanced world gen parameters and set embark points to max so you can bring better gear for these kinds of situations.  ;D

I reclaimed a fort that fell to a zombie siege. 4 embarks slaughtered by zombies, berserk miners and ghosts later, I finally got a foothold.

Then more necromancers came. Hundreds of bodies outside. Years of being trapped underground by endless hordes of zombies. It's a miracle that we survived. We thrived and created a military that could fight tens, hundreds of zombies! Nothing would stop them!

Then some workers and babies were killed in the caverns. TANTRUM SPIRAL.

Wow... epic.

However a baby/cat dup hold a special place in my heart for managing to survive a fightwith the FB , injuring it, then crawl off wounded to hide.

Epic as well.
But I can't find any pleasure in the new version of DF reclamation, with the lack of manpower and supplies to overcome the combined forces of all of the enemies on the map when you left, including ones that could not have gotten into the fortress without teleporting.  Being forced to fight three FBs at once, with seven barely trained and ill-equipped Dwarves, just smacks of punishment for not having played the game according to someone else's plan.

A legendary adventurer backed up by 20-30 soldiers might do the job though, let your men take the brunt while you go from behind. Kill, rinse, repeat. Leave, retire, then reclaim.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Any advice for a desert fort?

was gonna give some, but have nothing if its all free standing.

also my tree thing was already said by someone else >.<

even if you underground stuff, it will be flat and you can make lots of towers and above ground stuff, which is what I did for my desert for and made it part of my underground fort too. 3 big towers I had , all 3 were military towers/bridge gate towers :D

Tactical facepalm. The best kind of facepalm there is.
The student makes a stupid comment, but the comment is deflected by the teachers low expectations!
The teacher stabs you in the upper body with her snide comment, fracturing your pride through your thick skin!
The student bores the teacher with his boring prepared monologue, smashing the teacher hope through her studied indifference!
The teacher has become enraged!
The teacher facepalms, jamming the skull through the brain!

Yes! The army must do this to defeat EVERYONE!
The teacher has been knocked unconsious!
The Teacher has been struck down.
Now if only we could distill and purify annoyance...

If they can't get you, they leave after they get bored. You can "wall in", that is, use a raided bridge, a wall, a door, a floor hatch or something similar to keep them away from your dwarves.
Evidently they left much to my surprise. I have about 11 dwarves left. Unfortunately however, thinking I was going to lose I actually flooded my fort lol. Most of my dwarves are trapped down there, and I sealed the hatch. On the surface I have 1 miner dwarf and two injured ones.

Is it possible to order my miner to kill the two injured dwarves? I tried using the attack command from the Squad menu, but that didn't work. I have the miner set as the only member in his own squad.

Not really, he can't kill other citizens of his group.

In my latest 34.11 fort, I decided to set up a Dwarven Atom Smasher to get rid of a ton of excess stone (having 150 undead outside because of a Necromancer doesn't do good things to your FPS, especially on an older computer). However, I couldn't build a bridge over my quantum stockpile because the items were in the way, so I came up with a 'cunning' plan: build the bridge below, then channel a hole in the square with the thousands of stones. Somehow, that part worked without killing anyone (it was right next to the main junction of the bedrooms). The Fun happened when I activated the lever: all of the stones got flung back up the hole, crippling three dwarves, and one of my legendary miners got turned into a smear on the ceiling. Oops.

With some refinement, that sounds like an automated catapult shotgun trap waiting to happen.

Aaand there's the weaponization. Shouldn't we just start naming every thread, "How do I weaponize..." at this point? Because eventually all derails lead to the Weaponization Station.

I suppose this is inevitable.

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Re: hacking in full stats?

that would work i think, looked up castes. would limit it from popping up in world gen but be selectable when making adventurers. that effects how fast or how much you can increase skill? i forget =/

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / hacking in full stats?

Is there any way, by editing the raws or otherwise, to change the amount of starting points for your adventurer's stats?

Or should I just download runesmith? i ran into town for a friend to find out, as his internet is out for a while... so if this can be done without downloading something like runesmith that would be nice.

on my epic volcano fort i gave a huge story to earlier, i was reclaiming it decided for my waterfall down the side i should use DFhack to put a riversource instead of figuring out pumps.

forgot when messing with water earlier the range was set to 20 wide, 15 tall, and 3 z levels... I couldn't undo.

I used the "die" command.

In other news, auto dump and fast dwarf are great for cleaning up a fort within a year without a bunch of ghosts murdering your guys too fast.

So many face palms with this fort, but much epicness. After I deal with all these ghosts I shall get to work on finishing the epic vision I had for the mountain. Hopefully this one won't will spiral out of control and all common sense of people running around after two years again.

FTFY

But the question is, did you like my epic tale?
