Yo dawg, I heard you like dwarf fortress so I ran dwarf fortress in the background of dwarf fortress so you can gen worlds while you fortress.

Nice.

i always run winamp in the background, but the DF music is always in the playlist a few times ;)

Also, i really like my dwarfs so if the game is unpaused i'm totally into it. Not as much in a years old fort, but lately the sinister areas have been brutal. i'm too ocd to let them run around with out keeping an eye on them.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Song that best relates to fortress mode
« on: March 16, 2012, 09:19:26 pm »
It's hard to pick just one song! i usually have a playlist with all the albums by a few bands. Mostly instrumental stuff...

Explosions In the Sky
Russian Circles
Red Sparowes
This Will Destroy You
East of the Wall
Big Business
ISIS
Cult of Luna
Zozobra
Pelican
Rosetta

And my old standby, the Melvins

And there are some epic tracks on the soundtracks for the new Evangelion movies...

NW_Kohaku is awesome! i remember reading bug reports about this ~1 year ago, and the reporter seemed to think it was due to the amount of tiles dug out or designated... Pretty sure it had fps in the title, no wait, try searching for 'lag'. It was a long, whiny sounding title that had lag in it i think. And the word unplayable, i believe.

Also, if you have a decent system are you affected? my machine is getting on 3 years old, but i don't notice any fps issues. Also, is there a shit load of shit running in your task bar? Is adobe acrobat constantly trying to update? Fuck that, use Sumatra PDF. EVERY PC i have ever worked on is just plagued with useless crap running all the time. MSI Afterburner (for screenshots) and the volume control is the only thing in my task bar. i'll kill the service for windows security center and search and a lot of services/processes before i do any serious gaming. It mattered more years ago with less RAM, but old habits die hard. And my gaming machine has only been connected to the interbutts to activate a few games, so no anti-virus crap slowing it down either.

I'm pretty sure any one who plays DF is mighty intelligent, and possibly in some sort of IT field, so you can probably disregard my post, and i'm sorry if i sound like a dick. Upgrading or buying a new machine is a poor solution to improper/poor data management, but it seems like the people with fps issues have older machines. And 3 years ago when i built mine i made less than minimum wage, $7 an hour. i ate peanut butter sandwiches and drank water and rolled my own cigarettes, and in ~9 months i had 2 solid state drives a Q9550 4 GB of RAM a sweet case and a sweet MOBO with a 1333 FSB. oh and 1 25" HP 1920 x 1080 screen. Also i have a room-mate to split the bills, but we have no television or interwebs (i'm at the library now) so its just rent, gas and electric. i never eat out or eat fast food. At $7 i made ~$180 a week. < 2 weeks pay covered all my bills, and the rest was Whoo-hooooo! Oh, and i drive the speed limit and have no car insurance to save $40 a month. I've never gotten government aid either, and my poor ass bought RAGE a few days after it was released and it played silky-smooth at 60fps on my old machine.

Sorry to rant, But this doesn't seem to affect everyone...

Are there any plans to bring back glumprongs and sliver barbs?
Quote from: Toady One
It's on the list for this cycle of bug fix releases.

Sweet! Thank you sir! i may have to try a life of crime to get you some donation money. And the clothing bug too?!? The old ladies in my neighborhood had better clutch their purses tight when they walk to the market...

DF General Discussion / Re: Severed bodyparts are too mobile
« on: March 13, 2012, 07:18:01 pm »
i read some great tips here! And yeah, the ash-blight zombies are totally brutal. i didn't even get the cloud or at least an announcement for it, just human blood falling from the sky. I've had some embarks lately that were mostly serene with a few squares of sinister, and it seemed like Xanadu, but the ash blight zombies destroy all! i always embark with a mechanic, and cage traps are my savior... ( and zoos are awesome! ) But is there any other way to cure/destroy the blight? besides magma, i mean... On my last embark, 6 x 6, there are 8 sinister squares along the top and left side and the rest is serene. Seemed perfect. The ash-blight zombie rattle snake was quick, but luckily he went in a cage trap, but not before getting one of the horses that pulled my wagon. So, it was still tame, and dwarfs ran out to return it to the pasture and when they get a few squares away they cancel the job... But it was too late =p So, tame creatures infected with the blight should lose their tame status, no? Alas, when my immigrants arrived they were instantly ash-blighted... Fun! Yeah, i tend to be a sadist in real life, but definitely a hard core masochist in DF. After 4-5 years of thinking i had mastered the ultimate simulation its refreshing to know Toady can still introduce new challenges! i just had a dwarf go insane and her status said 'Attacked by own dead husband recently' Yes! Then i drafted her daughter to kill her zombie father. Fuck yes, Fun!

Totally agree with you, Buttery_Mess. It all started when one of the traders guards died and my dwarfs could not bring his corpse down below to the necropolis quick enough with out it reanimating. And sometimes they are easy to kill, sometimes they get the upper hand... pun intended. Even though i'm 10-20 z levels below, its still evil ground, and everything reanimates.

I must agree with this. From one death the amount of body parts are a little crazy. My necropolis is filling up faster than i can dig it out, and i have coffins for so many parts for the same poor dwarf, and those parts are still coming back... It seems like after one death my fortress is screwed. I've only played on evil embarks since 2008, but i'm thinking i might have to give up, its getting frustrating. It just seems like a peasant head or left hand could be just stomped by any dwarf real easy like... I guess at least the fingers aren't coming back.

Yeah, setting DF to normal priority seemed to make everything good. I did increase the buffers in winamp a little and now there is no skipping at all, not even during world gen or saving or loading.

@helf - Yeah, the sata mode is set to ahci. And dma was enabled, but i will have to check again. i've got an old biostar t-power i45 mobo. All the music is on an old P4 dell i found in the alley and set up as a Terraria server for my room-mate, and its been up for ~60 days or so and i haven't touched it since i put the 1 TB WD drive with all the music in it. The network usage never goes over 2.5% even if we are both playing music, so i figured it was a problem with my machine. The only hdd in my machine just has the page file on it and i have 4 gigs of ram so i figured it is out of the equation. But everything seems to be good now.

Thanks for all the advice!

Right on! Thanks for the tips! Not sure what WinAmp's buffers are set at, but i'll increase them. And i think i set DF to "high" years back when i was a stoner, so normal would be more approiate :P Yeah, normal for DF and normal or high for WinAmp sounds proper. Most of my music is flac also, so the file sizes are huge. And i listen to a lot of boring post-rock with 10 and 20 minute tracks... Thanks again! This community is the greatest.

Tilesets and Graphics / Re: Nagidal's Classic ASCII tileset 24×24
« on: February 23, 2012, 08:54:41 pm »
Yeah, this is super sweet! Thank you! Even my poor less-than-minimum-wage-earning ass bought a slick HP 25" screen in  early 2009. it was less than 2 weeks pay... I have been refining my own tileset since then, replacing some unused characters with unique ones for plants/creatures i like... Also I could not see ogres too well on my evil staring eyeball grass... And i gave pots and barrels different tiles for some variety and changed a few symbols

I will check this out right away, i love the shaded look! ASCII is the best! Well, all the graphics seem to be 16x16 so i might never know :P Thanks again!

Oh, and beards would be sweet!

So, i used to have a dual core and i would let one core have DF and the other have WinAmp and everything else, and everything was good. Well, during saving the music would stop, but everything was great. Now i have a quad core and without messing with affinity my music will skip at ~60 dwarfs. Any ideas? Its an old Q9550 and i have 4 gigs of RAM and Win 7 on one ssd and DF on another ssd. The page file is on a WD black 1 TB drive. Oh, i recently moved all the music to another machine on our LAN, could that make a difference? I set DF at high priority and have tried different priorities for WinAmp. Any suggestions are appreciated. (Besides listen to the DF music :P its in the playlist a few times!) I know i need to build a new machine, its all over 2-3 years old, but i'm currently unemployed. Thanks for your time.

Thanks for the quick response! And one of the duplicates is from me, even... Yeah i never thought i would mod this sweet sweet simulation, seems sacrilegious. I'm just hooked on purple beds and black clothing. Guess i'll look at my old raws and mod in that plant that can be milled into black dye and brewed into sake. Thanks again, this community is the best. Oh, and my cat died and i have a room-mate now.  :P

Will this work over LAN? Sorry if this has been answered before. It would be nice if my room-mate could spectate from his room with out making mine stink from his cheap mexican weed. Or i could take my laptop in the can! Also, i know someone with an Android phone with a hardware keyboard and i really want to check this out. If i could play DF on it during my lunch break that would be amazing. And totally worth the cost of all the monthly bills. Also i need a job.
