Other Games / Re: How did you last die?
« on: February 11, 2022, 03:46:55 am »
Had established an initial home into The Drake in Raven Creek, had looted the gun shop in north for piles and piles of 7,62mm and 5,56mm (but no gun for either o_o), had few decent wheels... Then; wild helicopter appears. Okay, time to arrange some stuff, take an indoors day, rest up... During sleep I hear explosions, wonder if I had forgotten some random mod on for such stuff to happen?

Nah. I had put stove on for some pasta. During night the bloody thing had caught fire and burnt it's way into the ammo storage. My guy wakes into a bloody inferno, explosions having been ammo detonations, and quite swiftly dies. At least you didn't turn into another zed, mate.

Whoa I've had some tight spaces on this server now :) The post-shutdown era is nice, but peak horde times are also here. Had to skedaddle out of town (Riverside) with luckily found car, no time to develop any skills bar spear and one-hand blunt. Now hunkering in some farmhouse and praying to discover how to claim a safehouse...

Luckily I managed to scrape together some basic tools so I might attempt to get some carpentry at some point, before that no point in trying to create any permanent base. Not that I have a faction either, so fingers crossed my car ain't gone when next on server.

Have to say, the mods I've noticed this far are quite nicely adding to the game. I thought about transferring gas from my sedan to the bus just to try them out, but gas economy first at least now.

Spent 6 days walking into center office area of Louisville from a safehouse near edge of LV suburbia. I had 2 spears, a crowbar, lead pipe and hammer on my possessions, few kitchen knifes, 2 beef jerkies and couple of canned foods for projected 2 day trip. Sadly respawns for zeds inside LV are somewhat insane, and in the end I had gone through path of least resistance and still racked up 1 level of carpentry, 2 levels of maintenance, 1 level of long blunt, 2 levels of short blunt and maxed my spear skill- 200 odd zeds dead.

All for a taxi that wasn't all banged up, and a can of gas, first amidst 50ish zeds and second in a trunk of a trashed sedan. All because some mutton-brain thought it nice to steal a 30% all round windowless pickup from my safehouse, he had to tow the bastard off my lawn! MP is !!FUN!!

This update made this game 100% better IMO, been playing for 230 hours and still kicking. Been playing on vanilla server, solo experience was improved by some mods, but even vanilla is really really fun on MP. Btw have seen some 60+ players at best in that server, some reported stutters in player-heavy raid on LV center, otherwise even that "stress test" went smoothly. Only whine I have is scarcity of cars, most wheels have been 0% engine due to parts harvest and mechanics grinding... I literally walked for 6 IG days into LV center's office blocks in order to find a functional car after some smart-ass swiped my pickup from "safe zone".

Might take a peek at your server someday if there's still space. Not too much of a party animal but some change to vanilla might keep things fresh even in MP!

General Discussion / Re: Things that made you sad today thread.
« on: January 04, 2021, 04:27:33 pm »
Today saw passing of Alexi Laiho, ex-vocalist and lead guitar of Children of Bodom.

Now, I am not too sentimental of people of celebrity (if he passes as one, dunno). Death is, in my field of work, quite close part of human life, so many people who I have looked up at when child/youth/adult have died and I haven't been too sad.

That said, CoB and mr. Laiho, in retrospect, were great part of my youth and particularily the torrentous times when my id hadn't yet formed. I feel that without cathartic anger and rage they provided through music my adult life might had become quite different from difficult, yet still acceptable to... Well, I'd like to think of myself as straight to fault person, but there has been very very bad times for me. Metal has been great part of keeping me from those dark places, and that path was galvanized by mr. Laiho.

Shiet, this feels little cheesy after writing it down. But frankly, this is probably only place I ever will express these thoughts. Rest in Peace, world's greatest guitarist.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Help with giant bears?
« on: November 30, 2020, 12:04:59 am »
1+2) Dwarves should keep it fed if it isn't a [GRAZER], which grizzly isn't. You can release it by choosing (b)uild-cage(j), slapping it down somewhere, and attaching it to a lever (3 mechanisms), after which you can assign it to a dwarf or put it to a pasture (i-draw fitting pasture-n-use shift+n- search freed bear and press enter).
3) caravan brought animals are perma-trained so no problem there
4) putting them to same pasture somewhat close proximity from each other? This I am unsure of, there has been some changes I've glazed over since my last more active times.
5) yes, no, and yes. Visitor's animals are, if I am guessing right, guinea pigs and rabbits and somesuch small herbivores? They won't be fed by dwarves, and thus tend to starve when their party animal owners get to year long hammertime in your tavern.
6) I've never used animals much for other than part of operation Delay the Clown Parade in which they are woefully underpar. One could, perhaps, use them as gladiatorial animals vs captured and disarmed and/or unarmored goblins/elves/humans, or as bottom layer of drop trap, or just assign them to soldiers as pets, so that they wade into combat with them and go to raids with them. Notable thing is also that giant grizzlies are frigging huge, so in emergency they yield a metric f-ton of meat and bones. Not to be used willy nilly, since they grow relatively slow.

Grabbed it on GOG for nostalgia's sake last year, and had some good ole times. Had it on my first own computer ages ago, back then logged far more hours on it than on homework :) I've had no probs running it directly from GOG installation, and the game isn't choppy or too fast either.

In comparison to free Civ6, I have opened the AC far more times, mainly due to better overall design. I think it has something to do with less mana mechanisms and more compelling personae, like the incidental Civ1 Gandhi style, instead of just Blahblah Heads- Those can be easily seen IRL by opening TV. Love to hate Yang... Even when playing as him :)

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What's going on in your fort?
« on: February 26, 2020, 11:34:16 am »
*Scene: a knot of armed and armored dwarves are pounding on a dwarf in similiar attire. Two more are already laying in pool of their own blood. A purple-clad dwarf enters.*

- What in the seven hells is going on in here?

*The purple-clad dwarf is upset. The beating pauses for a moment, a dwarf with a fine steel sword steps forth to answer.*

- A murderer is being apprehended, mayor, sah.

- A murderer? What, who, when? First I ever hear of this.

*Steel-sword dwarf points to one of the bodies. The criminal wails.*

- This here, Mörul, went to apprehend a killer. Killer had slain a tantruming dwarf in self-defence. Mörul decided to administer a beating, but took it little too far, and killed the... Well, killer.

*The sword points at another dead dwarf.*

- Then, sah, Rith here, she's- I mean was, new. She decided that Mörul had gone far enough and decided to punish him. She administred an axe to his windpipe, she did.

*Lastly, the sword points at the dwarf amidst the ring of annoyed-looking dwarves. He whimpers a bit, nursing a broken arm.*

- So, now we come to Stodir, here, sah. He was not impressed by Rith's judgement, not at all. Carried a spanking at her, he did, sadly with his silver warhammer there. Now, we are in process of dealing with a murderer of a murderer of a mur-

*The face of the purple-clad is almost in hue with his clothing.*

- You whatnow, why... Idiots, are you going to kill each other in turn? Why?

*The steel-clad's expression is deadpan.*

- It's the dwarven law, sah.

- Is that helmet perhaps too tight, you git? And where the hell does our law state that eye for an eye is the solution?

*The steel-clad is visibly puzzled at his superior's outburst. He points at an engraving on a wall.*

- It's right there.

*On the wall is an exeptionally engraved picture of dwarves. Dwarves are dying. Dwarves are striking down dwarves. Dwarves are contemplating.*

* The purple-clad draws deep breath, and shuts his eyes. He is counting under his breath. He points at the whimpering dwarf.*

- You, there. You are no longer welcome here at Diamondspiraled, I am casting you out. Guards, deal with the outlaw.

- Yessah.

* The dwarves resume the pounding of now-outlawed dwarf. Soon after there's third dead dwarf on the floor.*

- Now, you idiots, will clean up this hallway and no more of this sort of idiocy. You there, you are now in charge of the squad- I'll send new recruits and you will train them. Congratulations, capitain of the guard. Dig into Mörul's pockets, he has the keys to your new office, dining room and bedroom.

There is a chance your graphics installation has nudged some RAWs and caused 'travesties', especially if you have installed old gfx pack over newer version of game.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Odd obsidian aquifier
« on: February 19, 2020, 10:56:42 am »
Water can leak in from the ceiling if there's an aquifer tile above it, so that's probably what's happening.

Ohh, so that's a thing now? Cool! Might be that it has always been so but I just haven't noticed, with old fast aquifiers.

What's on 6z, if you were to dig stairs through the obsidian?

In order to not hijack the thread I put this into http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=175689.0

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Odd obsidian aquifier
« on: February 19, 2020, 08:05:07 am »
Diamondspiraled is a little odd place. But particularily odd is the underlake obsidian layer (beneath ordinary sedimentary layers) that has slow aquifier, something that bothers me a little.

Spoiler: lake (click to show/hide)
Spoiler: -2z (click to show/hide)
Spoiler: -3z (click to show/hide)

@Ant
What's on 6z, if you were to dig stairs through the obsidian?

This is quote from Moss not growing thread during which I initally noticed the anomaly. Disclaimer- I have modded scales and chitin to be useable, nothing more. World was initially created in 47.01. I've checked RAWs and noticed no alterations pertaining to obsidian, and no other oddities that would make suspect compromised RAWs exist... I've also put the layers into correct order for this post, something I mucked up in the other thread. And the layers above aren't obsidian as I initially suspected, so it shouldn't be lake effect. These tunnels have now been around for a game year or so.

Anyone have an idea what this is about? I've no channels nor other "ways" for water to leak into the chamber, and the dig cancelled due damp when first found.
