Since it's now in OpenGL, any thoughts of porting it to mobile? It sounds like the kind of thing I love running in essentially screensaver mode for hours on end. Or is it just not feasible due to UI and CPU power constraints?
Unfortunately the CPU constraints on mobile make it unfeasible. Simulating artificial life is expensive! I can't do any of the 'tricks' devs do with other games, like simplifying or unloading the simulation in places the camera isn't looking, for fear of affecting the evolution of the creatures.

Hey Qu!

I don't know if you remember me but a long time ago I was trying to manage the Wiki for Species along with a few other people.

Hi Icefire, I remember you! I think your name might even still be in the game, as one of the syllables occasionally randomly injected into the latin-ish species names.

The game never died, but I did lose motivation on it for a while. That's changed now. I'm determined to keep moving forward!

Aw, I'll blush.

I'm glad to hear its still trucking along! Excited to start following development again :)

Hi guys,

Have been looking forward to this moment for a while. I've never released a game on steam before, so it's kind of a big deal for me. Species ALRE is a passion project: an incredibly nerdy, niche game that I've been working on by myself for the better part of a decade now. I never expected it to have much appeal to anyone who wasn't me, but after much berating from the wonderful people around me (who are even more passionate about species than I am at times) I finally took the step to steam.

https://store.steampowered.com/app/774541/Species_Artificial_Life_Real_Evolution/

Species simulates evolution from the ground up, by simulating a bunch of creatures in a natural-ish environment. They are born, grow, breed and die, and their genes determine how effectively they do so by influencing their speed, stamina, diet, etc. Populations speciate and go extinct and the clade diagram grows in real time. Literally, the game has an actual clade diagram. I did say it was nerdy!

You can also apply artificial selection pressures to design the creatures, if you prefer a more hands on approach, or mess with the climate and commit unspeakable acts of omnicide, which I think will appeal to at least some Dwarf Fortress players.

I hope you'll take a look and, if you like the idea, maybe consider getting the game or spreading the word.

Cheers,
Qu

Hey Qu!

In all honesty I thought it had died/you gave up and I'm super excited to see it come back!

I agree, the starting sails are pretty garbage D:
I don't know, guys.... My first ships usually have 4-5 sails for a 1 ton ship, and it's quite fast. faster than with shitty engines, at least :)

I agree with this, except that manually enabling/disabling one sail at a time is very difficult. If you could mass enable them and disable them I'd consider this.

The Ultima universe/multiverse had at least ONE airship(actually just a hot-air balloon). Also, I don't think Worlds Adrift has resource depletion the way Ultima Online did - I've seen resources respawn right in front of me(in particular a tree that almost impaled the ship I was building).

Sailing is quite slow, except when trying to do precision maneuvers(then it's too fast), and I don't have any means of navigation besides keeping an island in view at all times.

There are instruments that you can unlock with the Knowledge tree as you progress. Also, you can unlock wings and engines which help you take more control of your ship as well as increase sailing speed. I agree, the starting sails are pretty garbage D:

The game will probably have better resource simulation as the game develops, it only just left alpha into beta

Urist was probably talking about the animals. Ultima Online had simulated animal populations at first, until players murdered everything. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KFNxJVTJleE

Ah, I was unaware. Thats interesting though

Ultima has airships?

Creatures in the game fly around in the sky but are actually simulated populations which, if they die out, disappear. They need to eat, rest, etc etc or else they die. They also migrate from island to island.
...huh. So what I'm reading from that is xenocide, xenocide as far as the eye can see. What happens when there's nothing left alive besides the players that intentionally wiped out every critter population?

I don't entirely know, and I've considered it myself. One thing, I think protecting this from happening, is simply how MASSIVE the world is. Like really massive. It would be extremely hard to completely wipe out the entire world's animal population (and even if, it's possible that they have some failsafe that occurs if a critter population gets too low, that may reintroduce a few of them in a random area).

Fortunately none of the critters provide critical resources, at least not yet, so even if they were killed off you don't miss them much. But I imagine it would be freakishly hard to do.

It looks and sounds very interesting, but a lot of the recent reviews and posts are saying it's a hailstorm of griefers, at least for the early game.

I personally haven't experienced it. I know (or have heard) that it's a problem, but the devs are working on addressing it (which is one of the reasons why I say they are very in touch with their community)

Here's one of their posts on it. https://steamcommunity.com/games/322780/announcements/detail/1653264049361529864

Pretty sure we have a thread for this already.

That thread ( I looked ) was for people looking for people to play with and the last reply was about a month ago

Other Games / Worlds Adrift: MMO PVP Persistent Islands & Airships
« on: May 25, 2018, 02:06:50 pm »
Worlds Adrift is a stunning game in development by the same devs who brought us Surgeon Simulator and I am Toast.

WA is a sandbox MMO in which you design and fly airships through the sky. Apart from your skyship, the only other thing in the sky are other ships and floating islands with resources. Long term goals of the game (so far) appear to be exploration and PVP.

Creatures in the game fly around in the sky but are actually simulated populations which, if they die out, disappear. They need to eat, rest, etc etc or else they die. They also migrate from island to island.

Despite being only on version .2.0.3 (in beta), there is already a surprising amount to do in the game and I run into other players on a frequent basis.

The devs as well are super in touch with their community (a must for me) and even have a built in feedback system (accessed with F2) that you can use to write notes to them about whats good and bad in the game on the fly (pun intended).

It's really such a great game with absurd potential, please check it out and at the very least, watch their gameplay trailer :)

The tendrils that evolved to grow into the ground begin growing upwards too, to absorb some of the organic debris. The membranes on these tentacles grow sticky substances that grip nearby material and release digestive enzymes to break down and consume nearby organics. This mostly collects floating detritus but also occasionally floating critters and they get broken down and eaten as well.

Some cells in the center of a colony specialize to create and release enzymes that can wipe out the pathogens by rupturing their cell membranes. Ideally our cells would be resistant to this, but if collateral damage is necessary to wipe out the pathogens then so be it.

On a scale of 1-10 how bad would me revealing myself to the guards be?
Well, your danger sense isn't going off, so you already know they aren't hostile to you.  (Most people aren't prejudiced against spirits in general, they're just being cautious.)

Ah I didn't realize my danger sense wasn't that powerful.

In that case I will hesitantly reveal myself to the two men. If things go south (hehe) I'll flee to the south, unwarded region and return to my tree.

Edit: I approach the two men and let them experience my Calming Aura. Escape plan still in effect.
