General Discussion / Re: Things that made you sad today thread.
« on: May 26, 2015, 10:16:17 pm »
Would it be dorky if a recently-graduated homeschooler burst in to shed some light on the homeschooly thing?
Probably... It would probably be very dorky.  It would probably also provide more fuel for the derailment.

So yah, maybe I'll not do that. Unless you all want me to. Heck I'd make a thread to discuss it if people want some insight.

Eh, I think I'll leave my sort summary at the least:

There are some pretty hokey homeschoolers and there are some pretty hokey homeschool parents, but both I and many of my homeschooling friends have come through quite well-adjusted (so far as I can tell - we are quite nerdy, so there's that) and with what I am certain is a higher quality education than we might have otherwise gotten. Mostly that's from working in small groups with specialized tutors after we reached the limits of our parents' knowledge. So yah, it's neither as bad nor as one-dimensional as you guys seem to think.

Assuming this is the right place for the question, I'd like to ask: whenabouts do you expect to be getting to hermit embarks? I've always wanted to try one but don't know how to go about creating one without Masterwork. I suppose I could go back to the older version where it's already implemented, but I was actually hoping to play one with the revert-to-full-vanilla that  Masterwork Reborn is capable of (simply because vanilla is what I'm familiar with; I hope to get into some of the modded content as it's redone for this version).

Does "enjoying eating their meat" count as "liking birds" ?
Hmmm..... I'd say yes.

4
Like, do I get to pick and choose my birds? I love me some songbirds and chickens and parrots, but wouldn't be too miffed if geese suddenly disappeared...
I'm afraid the question is one of grand hypotheticals. It is a purely abstract argument, dealing with philosophical ideals and essential definitions. Birds and people of every kind must be boiled down into singular ideas for the true answering of it.

I'd say that the majority of humans are indifferent to birds as a whole, and as such don't fall into either side of the poll. It's like, there's some birds that are kinda cool to look at, but actually dealing with real birds is annoying. It's not a net positive or negative either way.
Right you are, good sir! I shall edit the poll to remedy my ignoring of a critical point of view.

So, I want to know whether or not the good people of Bay12 think that people like birds. Now, this is not asking whether some people like birds, or simply whether you like birds, but whether you think the population of human beings as a whole have a net positive of affection for birds. I am also asking whether you each individually like birds just to get a feel for whether there actually is a net positive of affection for birds within the Bay12 community.

At this point, I suspect you are wondering why I am asking this question. I shall start by saying that $20 and my sanity lie upon the answer. I shall not, however, tell you which way my bet lies. It shall suffice to say that I seek to settle a simple bet between friends on the general state of avian-human relations.

Your response is very much appreciated.

Regards,
Me

P.S. You may not change your vote after it has been cast. Please consider your verdict wisely.

Edit:
I have now added options for indifference. I apologize to those who would have chosen such a category, but have already cast their immutable vote. I'm afraid I'm somewhat of a poor scientist.

( music, like rock-offs or the dixie style of dueling banjos and whatnot) seems like really great fodder for interesting stories.

I must agree, especially considering how frequent musical challenges are in some mythologies.

DF Suggestions / Thoughts on forbidding doors
« on: July 24, 2014, 01:07:05 pm »
So, my brother just had a small zombie siege and experienced the age-old Boatmurdered problem of having an object stopping a defensive door from closing. It's relatively easy to clear debris from doors these days with a garbage dump and all, but it still got me thinking about forbidding doors in general. My thought was that if we made forbidding a door an actual job, as in a dwarf would need to approach the door and lock it manually, it would be simple to have the dwarf doing this move whatever is blocking the door as part of the job. It would also make the whole process somewhat more believable than having the door simply lock itself at the whim of an invisible overseer.

Now, I'm sure this would make some things that require many forbidden doors, maybe some megaprojects of some sorts, rather more difficult, so perhaps one could even make "forbidding" and "locking" different functions. Forbidding would tell dwarves that they shouldn't go through the door, but leave it accessible by hostile entities who don't care about your stupid rules. Locking would prevent the door from being opened by dwarves, hostiles, levers, anything.

If locking were to be a separate function, then that brings up a new question: do all doors have locks? As in, will doors need to have "lock" mechanisms applied to them by mechanics in order for them to be lockable? and would all dwarves have keys, or simply be able to lock them with a slide-bar or latch of some sort? If locks are separate, then perhaps there could be locksmiths as an additional mechanic labor, and if not all dwarves have keys, then perhaps there could also be a new "key-keeper" noble.

Just some little musings on the subject of forbidding doors. Thanks for whatever attention you give them.

DF General Discussion / Re: Start playing new Version or older one
« on: July 06, 2014, 04:26:07 pm »
I would actually give the contrary advice. The new version will be a hot mess of terrible bugs when it first comes out, which is hardly something conducive to learning the game for the first time. Therefore, I would advise that you start with the older version for a time, seeing as it is much more stable and has many more resources available for learning it easily. Hopefully, by the time you have gotten the hang of the older version, there will be a more stable iteration of this new version, and a solid base of DF wiki articles and assorted utilities so you can then get the hang of the new mechanics.

EDIT:
Well, it seems Melting Sky was giving the same thoughts as me at the same time as me. (This is what is referred to as being "NInja'd, yes?") I suppose it might still be good to point out that my thoughts are a rebuttal of DarkDXZ's suggestion and not the post immediately above me, just for the sake of clarity.

That would be spooky-scary.  "Don't go in the forest, the things that live in the trees will jump on your head and rip your face off!"

So, I'm not entirely sure this is the right forum for this, but I thought people might be interested in a gorgeous example of real Masterwork quality crafts(dwarf/man)ship. This is a modern recreation of Agamemnon's curiass as described in the Iliad, but with the form dictated by archaeological finds from the supposed era of the real Trojan War.

(IT'S JUST SO BEAUTIFUL)

In my opinion, being able to sense the horrors deep underground and therefore cowering in fear is an awesome feature. The problem, however, is that this behavior should be for the occasional "insane, possessed weirdo", not EVERY NIGHT CREATURE. The crippling awareness of some great evil lurking beneath the miles of stone is awesome. Night creatures in trees is not.

I believe that they are yet still abstractions that just appear at your fortress with no regard for the outside world. I think Toady mentioned this in the last FotF update. I'll go check.

EDIT:
I was right.
In the answer to the first question of the previous update, he said:

"caravans still don't have an actual presence"

Which I assume means that they do not yet move across the map like armies, and cannot be found and followed by an adventurer.

He would modify the raws and regain the ability.

WWUD if he had a vision of Dwarf Fortress version 1.0?
