DF Suggestions / Re: Laundry to a Samba Beat

Yes that is an interesting image. I'm not as bloodthirsty as most on the forums. I'm interested in the way music could be used in this game considering the level of detail of everything. I get annoyed with instruments cause I can't do anything with them crept trade. Same with toys and mugs. Well all the crafts to be exact.

Lol, spell check only goes so far, but yes I did mean ballad. And isn't beauty in the eye, or ear, of the beholder. The dwarfs may just enjoy hearing a bloody tale filled with goblin deaths and body parts littering a battlefield.

I know this thread is two years old, but I wanted to post my thoughts anyways. :)

I love the idea of tools. DF is a very complex game. The reason I have recently fell in love with it. I agree that making tools at the beginning would be hard to do and add just another task to do per workshop. At a large fortress it could completely halt production if not kept up with. However what if the first automatic task of that workshop is to make a basic tool set out of whatever is available, rock or wood? Later at that workshop or some other one they could make advance tools out of better tools or expand the tool kit they have. This would improve the work and improve the speed its constructed.
Farmers and Fishermen would work without tools but work faster with them. As for people harvesting. How hard is it to pick a veggie or mushroom? You don't need tools. This would still allow all dwarfs to harvest.

As for the idea of sets of tools versus individual tools, I think both should be available. You could make a kit of various needles for your cloth workshop or you can make them one by one. This way could produce a stack of that one needle with a higher value then it would be if it was made as part of a kit. Imagine an artifact hammer that when used no matter if its a novice or master could produce a masterpiece every time? I also love the idea of a farmer beheading a goblin with a hoe than calming going back to work while another dwarf carries away its lifeless body. :D
Wouldn't it also make dwarfs happier to have tools that makes work easier? Having good tools could produce happy work related thoughts.

As for the tools being replace. If the advance tool sets run out the dwarf grabs a new one if there is one, but if not oh well. If a basic needed tool goes bad they autonomic replace it. That way if you didn't want to you didn't ever have to mess with tools, but reap the rewards if you did. A win win of sorts.

I'm not sure about the debate about musicians in court. But I personally love the idea of dwarfs playing music. In a meeting hall, dining room, etc it could boost happiness with nice thoughts. Unless the player sucks then it could produce bad thoughts and a chair thrown at him/her. In a bedroom area I think it would make the other dwarfs angry. If your trying to sleep no noise, no matter how nice, is annoying.
I love the idea of music sheets. Your musicians could write ballets about the events of your fort. Another way of preserving history. Traders could bring tales and ballets from the world outside your fort that your musicians could then sing. An old form of news and history telling of sorts.

The real idea I love is that of laundry. I think a workshop or even a designated room with certain furniture would be welcome. Instead of repairing clothes in that sense it could incress their lifespan and good give thoughts. Who doesn't love wearing clean clothes. A laundry maid could be a profession or the dwarf could do it every other season or so as a chore of their own. Soap and a source of water would be required. Maybe just a bucket filled with water? If they do laundry it'll have to be done in loads though. I could just see a dwarf washing his grimy socks one by one with a long line waiting behind him.  :D
I'd like to add that if that a second option to either the laundry or cloth workshop, or an entirely new workshop would be to repair clothes with threat. Maybe a single threat could fix X amount of clothes? Cloth that is too far gone to save made into scarp pieces to either clean with or make patches to fix savable clothes?
