DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Exploration Missions? Kobold Caves?
« on: September 22, 2019, 12:35:58 pm »
After years of not finding any GCS in the three cavern layers under my fortress, I read on the wiki that kobold caves can be raided for tame giant caves spiders. I found a cave that has both kobolds and GCS, but I can't raid it from the mission menu. I didn't have caves set as always visible in world generation, is that required to send out a raid to a cave? Can I change that option my messing with the world's files, if so?
Also related to world generation, I haven't been attacked by any megabeasts whatsoever, despite the world being 20 years old, my fortress easily blasting past the wealth limit. I do only have 30 dwarves in the fortress(Helps me keep track of them), but I've been told that you only have to exceed one of the three requirements for a megabeast attack. There are dozens of megabeasts in the world, but none of them want to steal my vast riches(so that I can capture them for the zoo). What gives?

I believe sites like caves, camps, and shrines will stay visible if an adventurer goes there. Retire fortress and run out there as an adventurer, maybe?

Vaults and shrines yes do need to be adventurer revealed, but kobold caves can be attacked and explored if you turn the hidden caves setting off in advanced world creation, or by changing the default world generation raws (for the generic create a world you're given).

Also Kobolds do not have a proper military (outside of what i think variable positions can do on those sites), so you could probably add a simple military with [POSITION:CAPTAIN] (which is a hardcoded role for siege fodder) so they have some people to call up for a actual counter attack.

Hmmmm, so there's no way to change this after world generation? Looks like it's time to roll up an adventurer. Thanks for the replies, guys!

Hmmmm, alright. Does anyone know where the attack triggers are? I know where they're at in the worldgen parameters, but it sounds like you're saying they can be modified post worldgen. If not, I suppose I'll have to get a population infusion to be atomized later
EDIT: Nevermind, I think I've got it. I appreciate the replies, folks. If anyone's got info on the GCS raids, I'd love it, but unless someone's got that I'll let this thread die

Restraints can be broken, but it depends upon the material type and the strength of the creature in question.  Rope restraints can be destroyed by dogs if they set their mind to it, and won't hold humanoids, but steel restraints are generally enough to keep most things down for any arbitrary period of time.  That said, a cave dragon is pretty large/strong, so even steel might snap to one, so I can't say for 100% certain.

Alright, so it would depend entirely on the strength of the restraint? I think this would be worth a bit of adamantine, then

EDIT: Mmk, after checking up on the strength of adamantine, it should exceed the dragon's strength by quite a bit, so it should work perfectly. Thanks for the help! :D

So, I have a semi-trained cave dragon that I want to set as a guard to keep underground nasties out of my fortress. It's moderately well-trained, but it's going to be near some nice furniture in my militia commander's room. What are my risks? As I understand it, so long as I keep someone assigned to the dragon to train it, it won't revert to a fully-wild state unless the trainer is unavailable for some time. However, if it *does* happen, will my steel chain keep it held until I can set up cage traps to retrain it? I've not found anything on the wiki to say one way or another, so I'd appreciate some advice from anyone who has experience with something similar.

Not yet, but ima take a swing at it as soon as I get my fortress stabilized. Also, I think the were-badger dorfs is a really good idea, and the regen could go a long way toward test subject survival. Also, can were-beasts be infected by vampires? Then you don't need to give them food, just drink occasionaly to maintain happiness. I've been drawing up scematics to make this all autonomous, only needing ale barrels loaded occasionally. EDIT: Sorry for the CP

I think my only option is to cage it, it is EXTREMELY strong and fast, but I don't have a GCS, so I can't web it. Does anyone know if you can cage a normal mammoth?

Hey, I just had a were-MAMMOTH attack my fortress, he killed my expedition leader, legendary miner, and two soldiers. He is strong and freaking FAST. Will he come back? And also, what is the best way to trap him? Can I use a cage trap, and if so, can it be tamed?

I waited for two months. Darn, I had a really good well going, and I was doing good. It's only my second fotress, the 1st got destroyed about a month in from a tantrum spiral, lol. So I researched a lot for this one, actually though it was going to survive long enough to fight a megabeast or titan or something. Oh, well. Lesson learned ;)

Well, turns out when I let my dwarves out, there was a gobbie maceman I didn't see and it kind of slaughtered all 78 dwarves. Now all I have is a vampire I locked in a safe room for situations like this. :)

Thank you very much :) A statue will be carved of you and placed in a shrine with walls engraved with depictions of our victory!

Guys, I need help. I have been ambushed, and a gobbie group is heading toward my base.  My military isn't up to the task. How do I get my dwarves inside so I can close the drawbridge? Also, when I close my bridge, will it block crossbow bolts? And will the goblins leave eventually?

Sorry for the DP, but is there some prerequisite for it?
