DF General Discussion / My DF logo for when I do DF presentations
« on: November 02, 2013, 02:23:46 pm »
A couple years ago, I started doing short talks at barcamps about Dwarf Fortress.  I decided I needed a logo for these.

I bought it from a place called HorribleLogos.com
My only complaint is that it came out awesome, not horrible.

If you are trying to use dfusion (dfuse or dfusion), you need to make the following change:

Otherwise you will get the error noted.

DF General Discussion / What if Dwarf Fortress was a chess game?
« on: August 30, 2012, 12:49:57 pm »
I was thinking (and yes it hurt).

It is fairly easy to match up DF nobles/citizens to chess pieces with two exceptions (rook & bishop)

King = Monarch (King or Queen)
Queen = (King or Queen) Consort
Bishop = ?? (maybe Expedition Leader and Mayor - Both use Consoler skill that maybe a Bishop would)
Knight = Militia Commander and Captain of the Guard
Rook = ?? (Champion and next best Hero)
Pawn = Any soldier except Marksdwarves

Any thoughts on the Bishop & Rook positions?

DF General Discussion / Dwarf Failures
« on: August 24, 2012, 12:44:19 pm »
I thought it might be fun / therapeutic to share your failed fortress stories with brief timeline.  I might be able to fill this thread to it's limit just by myself.  :)

The Tragedy of the Dwarves of Lalturbomrek

Lalturbomrek started on Osmlo Xagu in Spring 551 inside a nice hill.  Farming, brewing, crafting, simple meeting hall & dorm all up and running.  Good wood stockpile and rock blocks were rolling out.  One migration wave made the population about 14 or 15.  Then in summer 552, while absentmindedly channel out a moat in my three wide entry tunnel, disaster struck.  The miners didn't realize (or check) what they were above the meeting hall.  When they hit water, they dug again and it was all over.  The meeting hall and all levels below filled with water.  In an attempt to drain the fortress, both miners were caught in shallow water until winter hit and the mouth of their emergency tunnel froze shut trapping both to their death.

Since the only two picks the fortress had were gone, our dwarves had to try to rebuild without digging.  Stockpiles were shrunk & moved.  Wood was cut and stacked, walls & floors were placed to redirect the flooding and protect the clumsy.  A new temporary dorm was setup.  3 dwarves were stuck in the crafting area while attention was directed elsewhere and perished due to dehydration but made stone crafts until their final minutes.

Burials, slabs and tons of booze kept spirits surprisingly high.

Still the migrants came.  So did the elves.  For almost a year and a half there was no pick to be had and no digging done.  Finally in spring of 554 a migrant wave came with a pick (at least that is what I think, I'm not sure really).  Digging of some long delayed paths to allow wagons happened opening up the entrance to fortress.

Dwarves came will all sorts of good stuffs.  New areas for stockpiles were created and slowly (very slowly) the 50 adult dwarves started to move everything around and dig deeper and down further into the ground.  Due to all the inactivity for the two prior years, at this time probably 20 babies were born as well.

Happiness was through the roof.  Parties were happening, the fortress was on autopilot.

But these setbacks took our dwarves minds off of defense.  Some thieves had tried to steal, but dogs and some crossbows took care of the easily.  Nobody thought it was time to get a good seal on the only entrance.

Then the minatuar came when nobody was paying attention until to late.  He made his way to the grand hall and just started killing.  Other dwarves went mad due to the losses.

It is now rapidly approaching winter 554.  Nobody is happy.  Almost everybody is raging.  Nothing is getting done.

The sane dwarves are thinking about gathering outside, sealing up the front entrance and abandoning the fort to it's quick demise.  Perhaps in 555 somebody can unseal, go back in and reclaim the wealth to start another fortress a few miles away on the other side of the hill.  But nobody in their right mind will want to actually live in Lalturbomrek again.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Question about URIST
« on: August 20, 2012, 02:20:22 pm »
I'm having a hard time finding the thread while searching.  I've tried URIST, dwarf level bunker, and others.

I must be asleep at the keyboard.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Question about URIST
« on: August 20, 2012, 11:06:49 am »
I've been looking at the URIST project as talked about at http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2012:Stupid_dwarf_trick#U.R.I.S.T._Artificial_Intelligence

Most dwarves come to the fortress with at least some relationship to other dwarves.  How would you determine which dwarf to choose as the dwarfputer so that being apart and deaths would least affect him?

Obviously you would have to take somebody immediately as they came into the fortress, but there still is some existing relationship.  Perhaps just killing the relationship person immediately while he is still super happy.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Generating the desired world & senerio
« on: May 13, 2012, 12:44:53 pm »
I want or play a particular scenario that I have in mind.

I love creating a steel industry, but I've had problems getting a location with the flux and iron ore I need.  Is there a way to tweak world generation to increase the prevalence of starting points with the stones want.

Also as soon as possible I'd like to close up my fortress completely except a 3 square passage with traps & bridge to only allow in traders and migrants. Will I be able to livestock be able to graze on any "artificial" indoor pasture?  Can I trick them by opening to the sky and then closing it up?  Could I use a sort of "skylight" system?

I can trade for wood so I'll be able to create wood bins until I get iron production going.

Is there anything I'm not thing of that I need outdoors for?

Thanks.  That did it.

4th attempt to get a fortress up sucessfully...

This game is crazy frustrating fun.

I'm a noob.

I've generated a number of worlds and I keep creating worlds worlds with a good number of oceans, but exploring shows very few rivers.  I would expect a number of large rivers, but usually there is only 1 or 2 small ones.  There are plenty of streams & brooks, but I'd really like to be near a river.

I'm creating my world with the Quickstart recommended.  World size: Medium, History: Short ....  http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2012:Quickstart_guide#World_Generation

I'm trying a Large world size, but is there something else I'm missing?

Thanks
